23.01.2022 The low down on Coconut Oil! The hype around coconut oil in the media has been hard to ignore. Hailed as the newest ‘super-food’ , no matter what your health problem is coconut oil will (apparently) fix it. But what place does it have in our diets and is it actually good for you? Coconut oil is pure fat that has been extracted from the fruit itself (leaving behind all the good stuff like fibre, carbohydrate and protein!). Saturated fat makes up a whopping 92% of the fat in co...conut oil that’s even higher than butter. Saturated fat has been proven to increase LDL (unhealthy) cholesterol levels in your blood which contributes to the risk of developing heart disease. The media often argues that the saturated fat from coconut oil behaves differently to other types of saturated fats. Which is true to a certain extent Coconut oil is particularly high in one type of saturated fat called lauric acid, which tends to mimic healthy unsaturated fats by increasing HDL (healthy) cholesterol levels. However, science shows us that consuming coconut oil will increase your healthy HDL cholesterol levels, but also increase your unhealthy LDL cholesterol levels too. Overall, coconut oil simply does not stack up against healthy unsaturated fats that decrease the bad stuff whilst increasing the good stuff too. So should you include coconut oil in your diet? Coconut oil is very energy dense. Just 1 tablespoon provides 505kJ, which is mostly made up of saturated fat (which we just learnt is bad for you). So just stick with healthy unsaturated oils, like olive and canola oil and why not chuck an avocado in there too! NOVA Nutrition

19.01.2022 Check out this fad diet timeline from Dietetically Speaking. It goes through all the ridiculous fad diets that made an appearance throughout history. I wonder what the future generations will think about the current fad diets? Fad diets are a short term fix, supported by little to no scientific evidence but a strong media presence. Unfortunately most fad diets aren't useful for anything other than damaging our understanding of nutrition, our metabolism and our bank balance. ...Achieving your health goals takes persistence and patience, it won't happen overnight (if it does it probably isn't very good for you). It's all about balance! Most of the time you should eat healthy, balancing your intake of all food groups and including LOTS of vegetables. Then on Friday night, enjoy your favourite chocolate while watching a movie, or have dessert when you go out with your friends. You really do only live once (sorry for being corny) so enjoy food and all the fun times that comes with it... Life's too short not to have ice cream! If you need help finding your balance contact us today to see one of our nutrition experts. NOVA Nutrition See more

11.01.2022 When eating out it can be very hard to find somewhere both healthy and yummy, as places will often pack food with sugar, fat and/or salt to make the food taste better. That's why when you find a place as good as Black Sheep Espresso you make sure it's your regular meeting spot. How good (and FRESH) does this salad bowl look that I had for lunch the other day?! P.s. If you go make sure you take a peanut butter ball home with you, they're my fav!

03.01.2022 How cute are these guys!? At only 64kJ (15 cal) each they are a far healthier alternative to the standard Shortbread or Rocky Road (which usually clock up over 350kJ per serve!!). Of course you should eat that piece of Shortbread you've waited all year for, but when going back for seconds reach for one of these instead. Moderation is the key after all! You can find the recipe on the Australian Healthy Food Guide website (link is in the comments). NOVA Nutrition

01.01.2022 Let’s take a second to talk about PROTEIN. Do you think you need to be having protein powders? If you’re an average person, who exercises for 1-2 hours a day to maintain fitness and muscle mass for good health, then chances are you don’t need protein supplements! The truth is, protein supplements are an expensive and unnecessary alternative to protein found in real food (most of the time). The amount of protein found in 1 serve of protein powder (20g of protein) can also be ...found in 3 eggs, 2 cups lite milk and 100g chicken breast, just to name a few. The best thing is, there are heaps of other nutrients also found in these real foods that are not only good for your health but also assists your body to use the protein more readily! Maybe you should try a nice cup of cold skim milk instead!? Protein powders are best used when athletes can’t find practical ways to consume adequate amounts of protein from their diet alone. Even for athletes however, a valuable Dietitian will still attempt to ensure the athlete is getting their requirements from food first, before turning to supplements. Before spending all your money on these products, make sure you do your research. Stay educated to make sure that you don’t become a victim to some very clever marketing. NOVA Nutrition See more

01.01.2022 Cheese is good for you isn’t it?! Cheese is a great source of calcium and protein. Despite this, cheese is also high in fat, which means it’s high in energy too. Depending on the type of cheese you eat, you’re getting about 420kJ per serve (approx. 2 slices) and about 6-9g of fat (most of which is saturated fat). It’s also loaded with sodium, which of course is not ideal. Eating cheese comes down to common sense. Having a few cubes in your salad or melted on your vegetables isn’t likely to cause you problems (unless you’re lactose intolerant of course), but drenching your meals with cheese is clearly not healthy either. As you’ve probably heard before, moderation is key. NOVA Nutrition
