21.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism & we are doing our part to 'Orange the World'. Out the front of both our Newcastle and Charlestown Hubs, we have a solar light, ribbon & heart display - with a ribbon of remembrance for each women and child that has been murdered this year. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign from the 25th November, (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women),... through until 10 December, which is Human Rights Day. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. This Global protest is to make a stand & a call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. #16DaysOfActivism #16days #16days2020 #novaforwomen #WomenandChildrenMatter #newcastleaustralia #newcastleau #LakeMacCity #lakemacquariensw #dfvnsw #antiviolence #women #orangetheworld

18.01.2022 Congratulations to Nova for Women and Children: Homelessness and Domestic Violence Service on the launch of their new safety hub in Charlestown. This is a reall...y important service for women and children in need, particularly those experiencing homelessness and/or domestic violence. The hub is a safe space for women and children to come to and receive support and assistance from Nova's case workers. 2020 has been a challenging year for so many, and the Nova team have had women visiting their new Charlestown hub every day since it opened. Congratulations again to everyone at Nova, and thank you for the crucial assistance and services you are providing women and children in our community.

17.01.2022 Big thank you (again) to the wonderful people from the Grace Evangelical Church at Glendale who recently held a cooking afternoon for our Westlakes refuge & made up 56 delicious individual meals. On top of this, they packed gift bags filled with goodies for the women we support AND delivered the whole lot out to us. To everyone involved, thank you so much for your ongoing support of our organisation & the women we support, your kindness & generosity is extremely helpful & very comforting indeed. #gracechurch #newcastlensw #newcastleau #NovaForWomen #WomenandChildrenMatter #lakemacquarie #lakemac #kindness #generosity #community

16.01.2022 This years Anti-Poverty Week must acknowledge COVID-19, and the importance of policy shifts that provided most people the opportunity to live above the poverty line and attain some wellbeing. With the return to austerity we will not only put people back below the poverty line, but increase the amount of people living in abject poverty. We note the lack of a gendered and poverty lens in the Federal Budget and as an organisation full of #crediblewomen we will witness the increase in demand for safety, shelter, accommodation and poverty relief. #antipovertyweek

15.01.2022 This week is National NAIDOC Week, where across Australia we celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 15.01.2022 Hi Nova Community, Please join us tonight for an online event launching the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, and as we honour the women murdered in 2020

15.01.2022 Before the COVID crisis there were more than 3.2 million people including 700,000 children living in poverty in Australia. Being unemployed is the greatest ris...k factor to living in poverty in Australia. Two thirds of people in households where the main income earner is unemployed live below the poverty line. This is undoubtedly due to this historically low rate of income support payments. Prior to the introduction of the COVID Supplement, Newstart (now JobSeeker) had not been increased in real terms for over 25 years. Without the COVID Supplement, jobseekers have to survive on just $40 a day. Before its reduction on September 25, the COVID Supplement was helping over 2.2 million Australians from falling below the poverty line. Additionally the supplement was injecting $633 million per week into the Australian economy. The number of children in households receiving the COVID Supplement is over 1.1 million. This accounts for more than 1 in 5 of all dependent children living in Australia. Shockingly half of children living in single parent families live in poverty. The risk of poverty for children in sole parent families is more than three times that of their peers living in couple families. Since changes to the eligibility criteria of the Single Parenting Payment back in 2006, the amount of single parents living in poverty increased from 16 percent to 56 percent in 2018. Currently a single parent is pushed off the Single Parenting Payment and onto the lower JobSeeker payment once their youngest child turns 8. This must be urgently reversed so that single parents and their children aren’t forced into poverty. I’ve heard from countless constituents who are at risk of losing the roof over heads when the COVID Supplement ends on December 31. Dropping income support recipients back to $40 a day will no doubt result in people being evicted and people defaulting on mortgages.

12.01.2022 What an amazing surprise we got when the team from the The Wests Group & Newcastle Knights arrived at Nova headquarters, absolutely loaded with nearly 50 bags o...f groceries, USB Cards, Handbags filled with toiletries & more, all to help the vulnerable women & children we support both before (& after) Christmas. As part of the 16 days of Activism, staff from all Wests & Knights sites collected & contributed items to help & really got behind the cause. We really can't thank you enough for giving so generously to people & families doing it tough at the moment & spreading that message through your organisations that Violence is unacceptable in any way. All of this will certainly go along way, give people relief as well as reassurance that the community really does care. Absolutely outstanding effort & we look forward to working with you more throughout 2021. #newcastleknights #westsgroup #novaforwomen #WomenandChildrenMatter #newcastleNSW #newcastleau #lakemac #lakemacquarie See more

12.01.2022 Over the past month (due to social distancing), we’ve had three separate Welcoming Events to officially open our new Lake Macquarie Drop in Hub located at Charlestown - just behind Charlestown Square. We first started with a very special staff event. Aboriginal Elder, Uncle John Shipp, came along to welcome Nova to their land. John spoke about the history of the Awabakal area and performed a very special smoking ceremony for us. Together on this day we also signed a pledge... of commitment to support and work alongside our Indigenous communities. The next was a day where we opened the doors for all those associated service providers we deal with on a daily basis. There was a great response from all that attended, knowing that Nova have an additional Hub addressing the gap in the provision of services for women and children in the Lake Macquarie area. Our final event was where we welcomed the various Members of Parliament, along with other special guests that have been a great support to Nova. Once again, a great response and we thank everyone that has come along over the past month for their attendance and continued support of what we do. If you, or someone you know needs assistance in the Lake Macquarie area, please drop into our hub to see our staff. We are open Mon-Fri 9am - 4.30pm & located at: 21 Canberra St Charlestown 2290 #WomenandChildrenMatter #novaforwomen #lakemacquariensw #newcastleau #signmo #charlestown #dfvnsw #homeless #homelessness #newcastleaustralia #lakemacquarie #LakeMacCity
