23.01.2022 Flashback Friday: ‘Ramsgate Baths’, ‘Pemberton’s’ or just ‘Pems’ was the first and best-remembered land-based swimming baths in our district. Located on the corner of Ramsgate Road and The Grand Parade, the baths were named after the man who built and ran them, Arthur Pemberton. When they opened in 1924, they only had one 50-metre pool; a second pool was added the following year and a children’s pool in 1926. The baths were fed with seawater pumped directly in from Botany Ba...y via two sets of four-foot diameter pipes laid under The Grand Parade and Cook Park. Over the years, Arthur Pemberton added a series of different attractions: slippery dips; a kiosk; a dance hall; a sand-filled sunbathing area; and a small zoo which contained birds, reptiles, dingoes and, most famously, monkeys. He also installed floodlights to make night swimming possible. Perhaps the most popular attraction, amongst the children at least, was an event called the ‘penny scramble’. Signalled by a loud electric bell, Arthur Pemberton would appear carrying a bucket full of pennies. He would wait until the children were gathered in the children’s pool and then he would throw handfuls of pennies into the water and watch as the children scrambled in frantic competition for them. Arthur Pemberton was a kind-hearted man, but he was also an astute businessman: most if not all of the children spent the pennies they managed to gather immediately on lollies and ice creams from the baths’ kiosk. Arthur Pemberton died in 1968 and the baths closed at the end of the 1969-1970 swimming season. Coles New World purchased the land and built the supermarket that still stands on the site. Parents who do their weekly shop there probably value the convenience, but it’s unlikely they will ever remember the shopping as fondly as they do the swimming. #flashbackfriday #novotelsydneybrightonbeach #ramsgate

03.01.2022 Flashback Friday: In February 1966, a severe storm caused serious erosion at Brighton Beach north of the baths and in March a second storm cut heavily into Cook Park between President Ave and Banks Street. Only the efforts of Council employees who worked throughout the night along with 400 volunteers saved the sea wall, which had been badly undermined. The year of 1966 couldn't get any worse when on the night of 13th June, a cyclonic storm hit Sydney. Botany Bay became a veri...table cauldron, with waves 20ft high rolling through the Heads crashing onto Lady Robinsons Beach. A long section of the of the sea wall south of the baths collapsed, portion of the promenade was washed away, and nearly 50ft of Cook Park, together with a number of Brighton's famous Norfolk pine trees (pictured) and one of its historic cannons, fell into the Bay. #flashbackfriday #novotelsydneybrightonbeach #accorlivelimitless
