22.01.2022 The Nowra Velo Club returned to racing with criterium events on the Albatross Aviation Tech Park. This program is the beginning of a full race program for 2021 and will feature criterium events, handicaps, massed start events, time trial and a mountain championship. January will feature criterium racing on the Tech Park 800 metre circuit and then road racing resumes in February. Mny of the handicap events have been dropped to make way for graded scratch races. Sunday’s racing... saw a spirited A grade race where Merrick Law won in a sprint finish ahead of Hugh Sessini (Illawarra CC), Stuart Austin (Penrith CC) and Josh Ludman. Law has transferred to Nowra Velo from the Illawarra CC and this will provide more competition at the top of the local A grade. B Grade winner was Steve Gendek who jumped over a fallen Ryan Fleming as they entered the finish straight on the final lap of the race. After a bit of dodging of the fallen rider, Tim Devlin placed second ahead of Brad Oaten, Michael Berriman and Ben Wallis. Fleming survived his first race crash with some minor abrasions. Zac Peters put in a claim for a grade promotion with a win in D grade where he crossed the line two lengths ahead of Jose Pereira. Hubert Driehuis was third over the line ahead of Mark Robbins, Steve Daley, Rod Pierce, Ethan Astley and Jamie Overton. Garry Porter showed a sample of his aggressive racing of old in C grade and was in a solo lead for two laps before returning the the shelter of the bunch. Brendon Miller won this race in a sprint finish ahead of Adrian McMillan, Porter, Dave Gray, Doug Gray and Henry Wakeford. Criterium racing will continue on the Albatross Aviation Tech Park next Sunday, starting at 8.30 am. Adrian McMillan photos. Plus one from Adam Fleming. See more

16.01.2022 Merrick Law and Steve Gendek have started the 2021 season with winning form following successive wins in the Nowra Velo Club’s first two events of the year. Law won the A grade criterium on the Albatross Aviation Tech Park circuit ahead of Josh Ludman and Hugh Sessini (Illawarra CC) while the previous week Law won ahead of Sessini and Stuart Austin (Penrith CC). Gendek won the B grade race from Ben Wallis and Brad Oaten while his previous week’s win came ahead of Tim Devlin a...nd Oaten. This week Adrian McMillan won the C grade race ahead of Trent Wiseman and Doug Gray in a very tight finish. The previous week McMillan been second to Brendon Miller. Zac Peters is heading rapidly for a grade promotion following his second place to Matt Grootenboer on Sunday and a win on the previous weekend in D grade. The fast A grade race came down to a sprint finish between the five survivors with Law over the line three lengths clear of Ludman, Sessini, Austin and Curtis Trkulja. Ben Rolfe led the chasing riders over the line ahead of Coby Muir, Mark Astley and Lhyriel Smith. Numerous attempts were made by riders to break clear of the field in B grade but all were chased down before they gained a margin. Oaten and Amelia Trkulja held an advantage for over two laps of the circuit but they were all together going into the bell lap. Oaten launched a move from there taking Gendek clear of the field. They held this lead into the finish straight where Gendek raced ahead to the win. Ben Wallis led the chase and raced past Oaten up the finish straight for second with Oaten ahead of Trkulja, Tahila Dole (Illawarra CC), Michael Berriman, Mark Williams, Tim Devlin and Aaron Lauder missing the final lap dash due to a puncture. Liam Wallis lit up the C grade race from the start and paid the penalty later while most of the race activity came from Dave and Doug Gray. Into the finish and McMillan and Wiseman fought it out side by side right to the line with narrowest of decisions going to McMillan. Doug Gray was third. Ethan Astley stirred up the D grade bunch and split the field at the halfway point where five riders raced to almost a lap lead over the chasers by the end of the event. Peters was keen for a second race win but Grootenboer was just too quick up to the line this week. Mark Robbins finished third ahead of Hubert Driehuis, Astley then the next group had Jo Chalain leading in ahead of Jamie Overton, Steve Daley, Rod Pierce and Zara Jobson. Criterium racing continues next Sunday on the Tech Park circuit for the Nowra Velo Club and visitors. Photos by Steve Daley and Adrian McMillan. See more

Bob was loud and a real character. Many former members who were in the local club in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s will remember Bob. He served on the club committee at one time and also did a stint as club handicapper. He will also be remembered from his years on the farm at Coolangatta and later when working at Coles in Now...ra. Bob is the central figure in this attached photo. RIP Bob. See more
