25.01.2022 It's a miracle!! My Mackay Cedar is flowering!!! Mackay Cedar (Falcataria toona, formerly Paraserianthes toona) only ever seems to flower and fruit every couple of decades. I collected some seed in 1994 from which I grew these beauties, and have only seen one other plant in seed back in 2004. This is the first time in 26 years that these cultivated trees have flowered, and these are the first photos I've ever taken of this species in flower. To be honest, in 30 years of looking at local native trees, this is the first time I've ever SEEN this species in flower! It's a miracle!

23.01.2022 Biogeography is one of the most fascinating aspects of botany trying to understand the origins of plants and why they grow where they do. Too often we focus on the Gondwanan origins of many Australian plants, while forgetting that many tropical plants in Australia have their origins from the collision of Australia, Wallacea and Asia some 25 million years ago. If you find the subject as fascinating as I do, you’ll be excited to know that Prof Betsy Jackes is giving a presen...tation on the subject this Wednesday night, on behalf of Ms Elizabeth Joyce from the Australian Tropical Herbarium and JCU. The presentation Untangling the effects of the Sunda-Sahul Floristic Exchange on the evolution of the Southeast Asian and northern Australian flora: is based on the PhD research by Ms Joyce who is unfortunately unable to present the talk herself. The meeting will be held on Wednesday 14th at Oonoonba Community Hall Shannon St, Oonoonba at 7pm. Please note that masks and social distancing will be mandatory in accordance with the Qld Government mandate . More information on the talk can be found in the link below: https://www.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au//The-Sunda-Sahul-Floristic-E

21.01.2022 What a rare and special event! How often does a botanist get featured in our Townsville Bulletin? Way to go Betsy!

16.01.2022 Deplanchea tetraphylla, commonly known as the Golden Bouquet Tree, are flowering profusely in Cairns, Townsville and the Burdekin at the moment. This small tree with its distinctive large leaves occurs naturally from Townsville north to the Torres Strait and into New Guinea. It seems just as happy growing in wet coastal rainforest in the Daintree as it does in open woodlands on Cape York Peninsula. The flowers bring in heaps of birds and butterflies and are so attractive to wallabies it's sometimes called the 'Wallaby wireless tree'. These individuals were flowering at Jezzine Barracks this morning if you'd like to check them out for yourself

09.01.2022 We're inviting people to post their best native plant photos at the "Native Plants Queensland - Townsville Group". (The Facebook "Page" differs from the "Group", which is much more interactive. The photos will be assessed by all members at the Christmas Party and a prize will be awarded. Send the photos flying in. Regards. Cam.

08.01.2022 Happy Easter everyone. Castle Hill is overflowing with flowers both subtle and obvious at the moment. Well worth a quiet wander off the tracks.

07.01.2022 A wonderful action shot from Tony Swan. An Eastern Spinebill feeding on a Syzygium australe. Thanks for the contribution to the photo comp. If you haven’t RSVP’d to John and Janice for the Christmas Party yet, you may well have left your run too late. It’s this Sunday at 3pm.

05.01.2022 A very interesting and well attended stroll around Cape Cleveland this morning, with 15 intrepid botanists exploring the flora of the area.
