12.01.2022 Have you noticed a bit of a stink We’ve received a few enquiries of late about foul smells near our east-coast ports. So we asked our Environment Team at North Queensland Bulk Ports to get to the bottom of the pong. ... Have no fear, they say it’s almost certainly trichodesmium, otherwise known as sea sawdust. We get regular enquiries about the source of the slicks it creates. It is particularly present at this time of year as the sea temperature starts to warm up. The calm weather we are experiencing makes algal cells stick together and form slicks. The northerly breeze we’ve had will see it close inshore and washing up beaches. As it dies and decays it's common that it becomes quite stinky. The Australian Institute of Marine Science also have more information: https://www.aims.gov.au/docs/projectnet/trichodesmium.html
