24.01.2022 TRANSITIONS // In partnership with Townsville City Galleries, Umbrella is producing & facilitating 'Transitions' a four-month program combining mentorship, cr...itiques and development for early-career visual artists who have recently finished formal arts training or high school. The six successful artist mentees Anne Cole, Brooklyn O’Hearn, Moana Woods, Kaz Hauser, Rabin Sherchan and Shekira Smith are working with established North Queensland artist mentors. The mentees are working to build their studio practice, portfolios, artist CVs, and develop exhibition application skills. Read more about the program and see work-in-progress images here: www.umbrella.org.au/transitions The Transitions program is a partnership between Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts and Townsville City Galleries.

20.01.2022 WINNERS // Congratulations to Catherine Ogden for winning the Bamford Medical Art Prize for her stoneware work ‘Moonville’ in ‘The Future: Umbrella Members’ Exh...ibition’. She is pictured with her winning piece and Bamford Medical Business Manager Charmaine Binnie, whose practice generously sponsors the award. They discussed the role of sponsorship in the arts and sports as a reflection of society; very timely given the zeitgeist and ‘the future’. A further congratulations to the artists whose works were highly commended: Lynnette Griffiths for ‘Loss’, Ann Vardanega for ‘Legacy’ and Sonia Ward for ‘Future Planning Map’. They will each receive a free year of Umbrella membership. We are also grateful to the judges (Cr. Ann-Maree Greaney, Aunty Ros Sailor and Bamford Medical’s Callam Betts) for highlighting each of these works for their excellence and pertinence to the theme. It was an unenviable task, with the exhibition featuring 91 works this year. The exhibition is on display until 16 December. See more
