25.01.2022 We were asked about what it might mean to us if we are our own State. If there is one issue that sums it up it is the 'GST':
24.01.2022 The Gold Coast Mayor wants to move the Queensland border south by 7 kms. OK, here's a deal heading into the election: Move the border south, and at the same time put a new one in just south of Rockhampton for a new northern State. South Queensland will get their daylight saving and growth, and we in the North will get to make the decisions that affect us! Sounds like a win/win really! (Wonder if NSW will be happy with this?) https://www.news.com.au///ccb5c9c2b36682da304bba3091b464ac
24.01.2022 News Ltd reports the following two quotes from Senator Matt Canavan: North Queensland does not have a power station. .. Renewables are the dole bludgers of the energy system, they only turn up to work when they want to. Senator Canavan's language is very strong and raises a question about whether and how the 'N' in LNP represents the North. ... In s.7 paragraph 2 of the Constitution a promise was made to the North about having its own senators. The Hawke Government blocked it in 1983 with an amendment to s.39 of the Electoral Act. If the North is a new State we will get our own senators, and the issues like a power station will be resolved. Matt, your best work may be ahead of you!
23.01.2022 Townsville Bulletin reports 23/9/2020: Premier Palaszczuk pledges millions for Big Rocks Weir, Riverway Drive expansion, DriveIt, Mt Isa mine. .... Premier Palaszczuk and Treasurer Cameron Dick were in Townsville to announce the Townsville Regional Recovery Action Plan. This is a plan designed to help you kickstart the Townsville economy, following on from the coronavirus crisis, she said. Here's a couple of questions Premier and Dick: Where were you when we ran out of wate...r in 2016-17? Where were you when Townsville was declared then bankruptcy capital of Australia in 2017-18? Where were you when mum and dad businesses were going broke and Townsville was rated one of the most unlivable places in the country? And now you come here with 'Covid' rescue packages pumping up your tyres? Reader: 31 October - send a message! See more
23.01.2022 At the end of the State of Origin game 1, Annastacia Palaszczuk replied to a three day old SMS she had from NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. Palaszczuk's SMS response: "Queenslander". Let us be really clear - Annastacia Palaszczuk is NOT a Queenslander - she is a Southern Queenslander. She does not represent the North of this State!
23.01.2022 Not much response by 'politicians' to our first question so here is another on the Election and the GST: BACKGROUND All of the GST is collected by the Commonwealth and then given to the States. It is not distributed to the states, however, according to where it was collected from. Rather it is given to the States under the Horizontal Fiscal Equalisation Principle (HFE). In 2018-19 the Queensland government received 22% of the national GST revenue or $14.45 bn. Most importa...ntly, that revenue is not distributed in Queensland on where it was earned, OR by any other formula other than at the discretion of the Brisbane based government which is never disclosed. The Question to all northern Candidates: If elected, what transparent formula will you propose to ensure the north gets a fair go?
22.01.2022 It's all about Brisbane! It's the last round of the NRL and the Cowboys travel to Brisbane to play the Boncos - who are playing for the wooden spoon (And by the way, how much did our northern netball girls and our hockey players, and soccer players and other codes pay for the AFL grand final in Brisbane?). The Cowboys win, but all the news is about the Boncos and Darius! Hey C'Boys, well played and a massive congratulations to Gavin Cooper on an outstanding career! Oh, if only we were our own State. Imagine, our own State of Origin team - NQ, flogging Qld and NSW! 31 October - elect someone who will represent the North and not be a Brisbane puppet!
21.01.2022 The first critical step on the pathway to NQ becoming the 7th State is the establishment of an Independent Commission of Inquiry to see whether it is viable and where a border might be. It is the Australian way call in an independent umpire! NQSA recently wrote to all northern electorate candidates ( north of Rockhampton) in the forthcoming State election and asked them to make their position known: Will you support a commission of inquiry into the potential division of t...he State of Queensland during this term of parliament? To date, not one candidate from the major parties (ALP nor the LNP) has responded!!! What does that mean? a. They deny the growing public demand? b. They do not believe in an independent umpire? c. They do not care about the North? d. All of the above! The choice in the election is becoming very simple: Do we stay with the status quo and a future where we north Queenslanders remain the serfs of the south east? OR Do we choose a better future for our kids and their kids!
21.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: Saltwater crocodile found in Chermside, suburban Brisbane:"The young crocodile is currently only 40 centimetres long, but if it had grown to full size, it would have posed a danger to the public. Just imagine the threat to the public - WOW!... https://www.news.com.au///56c89940661ad9c2903be0f21aaea829
19.01.2022 On Saturday 11 January 2019, a general meeting was held in Cardwell of people from the Torres Strait to Mackay about achieving a choice for the people of North Queensland to become the 7th State in the Australian Commonwealth. The clear messages from the meeting: 1. The strength of ‘our voice’ to achieve 'our choice' lies in our ‘diversity and our unity'. 2. We totally reject the exact same position held by the ALP’s Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, the LNP’s Deb Frecklington and One Nation’s Pauline Hanson, who by saying ‘NO’ to a people’s choice, say they have no confidence in the people of the North being able to govern themselves. Join us so we can change who is making the decisions affecting our lives!

16.01.2022 The JCU School of Arts, Society and Education held a Northern Visions Roundtable yesterday. One of the speakers was Adjunct Professor Lyndon Megarrity, who recently released his book 'Northern Dreams: the politics of northern development in Australia'. In his presentation, Professor Megarrity made the following point: 'Queensland is not homogenous' - i.e. it's not the same throughout the whole of the State. It's a very good point! Perhaps there is one issue that demonstrate...s this more than others - health care! If we look to history we see that people in the north died from diseases like leptospirosis (Weals disease), and it was a Doctor in the North that identified it and its treatment. Looking ahead, as the climate changes diseases in the tropical equatorial regions will mutate and move south. Who will best placed in North Australia to make decisions about the risks and research needed? People in the South, or us in the North? Health is a State issue, and as a new State we will be best placed to make the decisions that affect us! See more
15.01.2022 One year from today we will choose a new State government. It will be a choice about our future and our kids' futures: Is the ‘state’ of NQ just geographic, or do we live in a ‘state of being’ North Queenslanders?
14.01.2022 Not much response by 'politicians' to our first question so here is another on the Election and the GST: BACKGROUND All of the GST is collected by the Commonwealth and then given to the States. 14.01.2022 Today's ABC Headline: "Tourist's foot bitten off and another man injured in Whitsundays shark attack" In responding to the tragedy, the ABC reports that Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: "I'm not going to talk about the politics of drum lines today". And from the Whitsunday Mayor, Andrew Willcox: "When the dust settles there'll be a lot of things that we discuss." Maybe Mr Wilcox should have said, "When the fella's foot grows back on there'll be a lot to discuss"!!!!! WE ...LIVE IN TWO SEPARATE STATES NOW! We just don't get to make the decisions that affect us! Next State election is now 366 days away! https://www.abc.net.au//airlie-beach-shark-attack/11649308 See more
12.01.2022 377 Days until the next State election on 31 October 2020. AND THEN we lock into four years!! What does the North want - 4 more of the ALP or LNP? If you change nothing, nothing changes!
11.01.2022 "Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill joins push for new North Queensland state." Townsville Bulletin, 10 December 2020 "An unlikely ally has joined the push for a new state, saying there is no clear path forward for the regions without breaking away from the southeast."
11.01.2022 The tale of woe for the North continues: https://www.cciq.com.au//queenslands-job-creation-a-tale-/
10.01.2022 The NQ State conversation is gaining traction thanks to comments by Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill in the Townsville Bulletin this week. A great response in Letters to the Ed Tvl Bulletin today from #NQSA member. Check out the NQSA website www.nqstate.com.au and download the Conversation Handbook to get the real information on the issues and to see the proposed pathway (p.18)
10.01.2022 Voting starts today in the upcoming State election. Please choose wisely - NO FRUIT PICKING. The LNP nor the ALP will give us our choice to be our own State, and they have treated us like serfs for over 150 years. So please, we don't need another 4 years of lemons! Please choose a candidate that will represent the North!
09.01.2022 Background: Covid-19 has shown the importance of our federation of States in protecting our national community. Importantly also, our nation grew because of federation, and in the aftermath of Covid-19 we need growth. A Commission of Inquiry recommended an area in northern NSW as suitable for a new State; for which a referendum was held in 1967. The people of NQ have wanted to be our own state since 1897. Question to all Qld State election candidates: If elected, will you vote in favour of an independent umpire (i.e. a Commission of Inquiry) being appointed to ascertain whether an area in northern Queensland is suitable to become a new state? YES or NO.
09.01.2022 The NQ State Alliance now has an established Branch in Cairns, and today the Cairns NQSA Team announced it will be contesting the Cairns Local Government Election in March. Jen Sackley is the Mayoral candidate and you can follow Jen and her team at: https://www.facebook.com/JenSackley4Mayor//2468709983342976
08.01.2022 PERINATAL DEATHS AND BABIES BORN ON NORTHERN ROADS. Read the ABC article attached and feel the pain. The LNP, ALP, KAP, ONP have all been in our Parliament whilst this has occurred. And so lets be absolutely clear and confront 'our reality': It is not until WE make the decisions here in the North that affect us that bad decision making will change. https://www.abc.net.au//mossman-mothers-want-mat/12460960
08.01.2022 In 1901, s.7 paragraph 2 of the Constitution was inserted to allow NQ to get its own Senators in the Federal Parliament. It never happened, and the Hawke government blocked it in 1983. In 1921 the Qld Parliament upper house was abolished, leaving the North under represented.
06.01.2022 Recently in the news was a call to rename some Queensland towns - e.g. where in the past there had been names linked to unsavoury practices like slavery. One of the towns identified was Townsville. What will its new name be? Well, there is the hoary old name Brownsville (for it being a bit dry). Staying with a bit dry, maybe it should be named after the State representatives we have had over then last few years - Clownsville! The governance principle: Subsidiarity! Decisions should be made as close to the people they affect as possible. New State - our decision!
06.01.2022 North Queensland, is your ‘voice’ being Heard? The North Queensland State Alliance Inc is a ‘grass roots’ organisation which is neither left, right or centrist. It is a very broad church and welcomes all people from Rockhampton to Thursday Island and all points West to join. You will not see a white Akubra or a mining magnate on the books, there is no funding from unions or the international environmental conglomerate. We are a truly democratic grass roots organisation.... There is one purpose and one purpose only: To bring about a fundamental and foundational change to how regional Queensland is governed, which delivers equity to all centres, fairness, balance with checks on abuse of power and a BILL OF RIGHTS. The Queensland Labor government, the Queensland LNP and Senator Pauline Hanson have all publicly opposed a NEW STATE. And what’s worse, they have also opposed the people of a new northern state area having a choice. In response to that opposition, the North Queensland State Alliance Inc is now moving to political party registration in Queensland. To achieve that we must gain a minimum of 500 registered members. Our aim at the next State election on 31 October 2020 is to win the balance of power in the Queensland parliament in order to secure the ascent of the parliament of Queensland to begin the process for a new state to be formed. Only you can make this happen by adding your ‘voice’ to the collective, so that we get our ‘choice’. Please download and print the discussion handbook from the North Queensland State Alliance web site https://nqstate.com.au//uploads/2019/08/Online-Handbook.pdf and distribute it to your families, friends and work mates. Then quickly join us by taking on membership and contributing financially or voluntarily to the cause: ‘Our voice, our choice’. Luke Hargreaves, Bowen. See more
06.01.2022 Hung or Representative Parliament? The State election is on 31 October, and so it is time to reflect. The North has suffered under both parties: The ALP Bligh government gave us the highest debt to state product ratio in our history despite coming through the richest period in Qld’s history. The LNP’s Newman cut, slashed and retrenched in the north and plunged us into recession. And who was the minister advising Newman Deb Frecklington. And then there is Palaszczuk - give...n us over $100bn in debt, given the north titles like most un-livable cities, and feathered the Brisbane nest. The two major parties (ALP and LNP) both say: ‘Don’t vote for the minor parties we don’t want a ‘hung’ parliament!’. Politicians! Tired of them? Here’s a thought: No, we don’t want to elect politicians; we want to elect parliamentary representatives people who will represent the people in the people’s house, the Parliament! WE WANT A REPRESENTATIVE PARLIAMENT! If that means that we in the north elect ‘representatives’ on the 31st October who are not from the major parties, but who hold the balance of power and can influence decisions about the North, then let’s get on with electing them!

05.01.2022 The federal structure is killing us. It is time to change! Today, States only raise 50% of the money they need to spend on State matters - ie roads, water, and emergency services (fire fighting, flood rescue etc). Because of the Commonwealth’s tax grab (and political opportunism) are deaths occurring that shouldn’t occur? Here is an excerpt from the ABC story below: "The only real contribution the Federal Government makes to bushfire fighting as opposed to disaster relief ...funding is the provision of funding to aerial firefighting. ... Remember the debate over the so-called "Elvis" helicopters and why there were not more available to fight fires in 2003?John Howard responded by setting up a special agreement where the Federal Government contributes $30 million to the upfront costs of firefighting aircraft. But these costs, with time and escalating fires, are now around $90 million." Where is the Senate (the State's house) in all of this? Canavan you are missing in action! You say you support regionalism and a new State of NQ. BS! https://www.abc.net.au//catastrophic-bushfire-sea/11708632
04.01.2022 Townsville Bulletin 5 Jan 2021: "Burdekin hydro could generate millions of dollars worth of power The Labor state government is wasting the clean energy potential of water flowing over the Burdekin Falls Dam worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year, an engineer says...." There are 76 senators in the Parliament. There are just 6 who reside and represent the people north of the Tropic of Capricorn for population of around 1.3 million. Tasmania - 500,000 people and 12 senators! New NQ State - 12 senators for 1 million people! Not that hard really!
03.01.2022 In our previous post we noted that the new Minister for North Australia is from the Federal Seat of Hinkler - Bundaberg and Hervey Bay (bit south of the Tropic of Capricorn.) In defence of the appointment, Prime Minister Scott Morrison described Mr Pitt as a North Queenslander. Tell you what, if Bundaberg is North Queensland I'm off to the bar to get a beer, and while I am there I will get a 'clue' for Mr Morrison because he doesn't have one!
03.01.2022 In response to our previous post, we had a comment that the federal system is broken. YES, it is broken. How broken? This table shows how we in the north have been hung out to dry:
02.01.2022 The Bradfield Scheme (water from the North to the South) was put forward in the 1930s. 2019 and the LNP are saying they are the saviours for reinvigorating it. Really! We in the North remember very vividly Campbell Newman and his mate Dim Nicholl! It is One (1) year tomorrow until the next State election. On 31 October 2020 if either the ALP or the LNP win in their own right we will be locked in for FOUR (4) years! We are looking for support to get people elected who will ...stand up for the North and not be a puppet for either the ALP or LNP. Please contact us via our web page if you can help. https://www.abc.net.au//bradfield-scheme-is-movin/11662942 See more
02.01.2022 Did you know: 'Brisbane was first settled by Europeans to be used as a penal settlement where Sydney offloaded its worst convicts.' (http://www.discoverbrisbane.com/brisbane/history.html) Nearly 200 years later and what's changed? Still a bunch of 'pick-pockets' only now taking from the North to pay for their extravagances, like 'Cross river rail'. 31 October: Choose wisely who you want to 'represent' the North. (In thinking about that remember that neither the ALP, LNP nor ONP will give us our choice to become the 7th State!)
02.01.2022 It's all about Brisbane! It's the last round of the NRL and the Cowboys travel to Brisbane to play the Boncos - who are playing for the wooden spoon (And by the way, how much did our northern netball girls and our hockey players, and soccer players and other codes pay for the AFL grand final in Brisbane?). 01.01.2022 The LNP posted the map on the left about unemployment in Queensland, saying the ALP's not working. Well, on our estimates the unemployment rates between the North and South look like the map on the right. LNP only telling half the story? Again!
