25.01.2022 One year on. Remembering Hannah, Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey Clarke.

24.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the start of the '16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence' - Something we are very passionate about at NQWLS. The theme for the 16 Days is "Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect". Thank you to our French model/male ally, Nils and our fearless Acting Principal Solicitor, Hayley for rocking their VERY orange Rosie shirts and reminding us all that "We CAN Do It".

19.01.2022 What happens in Canberra (or anywhere for that matter), shouldn't be able to stay there. It's time to call out poor behaviour and listen to those that do, rather than actively seeking to silence them. You can watch the latest Four Corners episode here: https://iview.abc.net.au///series/2020/video/NC2003H040S00

19.01.2022 In 2020 it’s more important than ever to #OrangetheWorld. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines, have shown t...hat all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified. This year has seen women and girls disproportionately affected by the social and economic fallout from the pandemic and this has included the higher risk of and incidence of violence. Intimate partner violence increased as women were trapped inside their homes with their abusers during lockdown. This gender based violence has killed 53 women in Australia this year, and it’s got to stop. We need policies to put into place to protect women. We need more community outreach programs to educate the next generation. We need to raise awareness, and the only we are going to do it is to talk about it. And not just when another women is murdered. When will end? and sending prayers and thoughts is not enough. We need actual change in the law. Actual repercussions for offenders. And the government to pledge money for government funded advertising campaigns like they do with alcohol abuse, and road death tolls. This is the shadow pandemic and there is no vaccine. . . . #internationaldayfortheeliminationofviolenceagainstwomen #dangerousfemales

19.01.2022 Joint Media Statement: Passage of flawed merger bill tasks family law judges with an impossible task

18.01.2022 This needs to change. Police across Townsville alone today will attend 19 domestic violence incidents and 11 protection orders will be breached. Enough is enough.

17.01.2022 BREAKING: The Palaszczuk Government will appoint an independent taskforce to consult on coercive control legislation. Coercive control is a form of non-physical... domestic and family violence. It includes behaviours such as controlling what someone wears, limiting access to money, tracking someone’s location, controlling who they see and persistent texting, and it can lead to physical violence. We’ve seen legislation against coercive control in places like the UK, and it’s important that we too have legislation in place to better protect victims. Later today, we’ll announce the appointment of an eminent person who will chair the taskforce.

13.01.2022 Human Rights Month is here! Human Rights Month is an annual campaign run by the Commission to highlight the importance of protecting and promoting human rights.... It runs from 10 November each year, culminating on International Human Rights Day on 10 December. This is the sixth consecutive Human Rights Month we’ve run, but the first with a Human Rights Act in full operation. This Human Rights Month we’ll be focussing on the Act and answering some of the most frequently asked questions about what it protects, who it applies to, and how it’s being used to protect the rights of people in Queensland. There are resources over on our website including posters, training for workers and the community available during the month (including some free webinars!), and more you can check them out at https://buff.ly/3eBTLyq. [Image: an illustration of a hummingbird sits on a blue, aqua and white background. ‘Human Rights Month 10 November 10 December 2020’ is in blue text underneath the hummingbird. At the bottom of the tile is the QHRC logo on the left, and on the right is an orange box with ‘#HRM2020’ and ‘https://buff.ly/359DDAR’ in white text.]

09.01.2022 SANTA HAS COME EARLY! Kaitlin, one of our long standing volunteers, delivered this basket of home-made, delicious goodies (even catering for our staff with pesky dietary requirements) along with a beautiful card to our Townsville office. Due to social distancing restrictions, we haven't been able to have our volunteers in the office this year, and boy have we missed them. These wonderful humans are very much part of the NQWLS team and we cannot wait until we can have them back in the office, helping us to help more women. Thank you Kaitlin for spoiling us with this very thoughtful gift and for all the support you've given to our Service. We don't have favourites amongst our volunteers, but if we did...
