05.02.2022 ARBOVIRUSES - mosquito borne viruses. Recently various arboviruses such as Murray Valley Encephalitis, Kunjin Virus and Ross River Virus have been diagnosed in horses in the Hunter Valley and other areas of NSW. We have been seeing horses for similar signs here in Northern Victoria. The virus is spread to horses via a bite from an infected mosquito, the disease is not transmissible from horse to human. We normally see an outbreak of arboviruses following an unusually wet su...mmer with increased mosquito numbers. Horses commonly present with neurological signs such as staggering, incoordination, weakness, and depression. Treatment varies according to clinical signs; however most adult horses make a full recovery within a few days. The more vulnerable older horses and foals can show more severe clinical signs such as complete collapse and limb paralysis and require more intensive treatment. Occasionally some horses experience long term neurological affects or mortality associated with the infection. Diagnosis involves clinical signs and two blood samples taken 3 weeks apart. This virus can present very similarly to Hendra Virus, therefore please do not make contact with the horse or any secretions (blood, saliva etc) without consultation with your veterinarian. PREVENTION: Avoid contact with mosquitoes, this is challenging however the following may help: - Remove any sources of stagnant water (old tubs, dams etc) which reduces the breeding sites for mosquitoes. - Use repellents. - Protective horse rugs and fly veils. - Stable horses with insect screens if possible, during peak mosquito periods. - Commercial mosquito traps. Please contact the clinic (03) 5852 2845 if you are concerned about your horse.

22.01.2022 No surprise to anyone that the Goulburn Valley bred, owned, trained or driven horses dominated the Breeders Crown night at Melton on Saturday night. First up Hu...rricane Harley bred and owned by Bill and Anne Anderson proved too slick for Lochinvar Art. Amanda Turnbull produced a gem of a drive to win. Cracker Jet was a brave third in the 3yo trot final for trainer Patrick Ryan. Major Moth could not have been more impressive in winning the 2yo colts final with Damian Wilson in the cart. Great to see The Panthiest win at long odds for Merrigum breeder /owner Greg Pell in the 3yo fillies final. Fantastic run by Jemsoms Pet to run third in the 3yo final for Craig and Abbey Turnbull but more importantly a real boost for owner Greg Lewis who has endured more than most these past few months. David Moran was at his best when piloting Ladies in Red to win the fillies final again for Bill and Anne Anderson. Tough Tilly was game in defeat for Numurkah breeders Benstud in that same race. No Win No Feed who has been stabled at Shepparton for trainer Craig Cross was ultra impressive in winning on the feature night. For all those results happiest of all would have been Alabar who stallions sired 5 of the winners and sired the dams of 3 other winners on an amazing night. What a night for the Goulburn Valley.
