25.01.2022 Look how good a std caliper can come out. This is the rear set for the customer whose calipers we coated last week. I wasn't sure that drawing attention to a std caliper with a bright colour was the way to go but i am really impressed with the way they have come out. If you have any calipers you would like done give us a call on 9638 1037.

24.01.2022 NRG Automotive hits the big 30! February 1988 and a young and somewhat naive 20 year old motor mechanic just out of his time started his own workshop with a dream to do the right thing by customers by doing the best work he could. Looking back, it's been a long road. A hell of a lot has happened in the last 30 years some of it hilarious and of course some not so much, but the main thing is that we are still learning everyday. ... Over the next few months I want to share with you some of those stories, from the changes in everything that we Mechanics do to the cars we now work on and not forgetting the industry in general. Our business today is unrecognisable from what I started 30 years ago. Keep a look out on here for our posts,we hope to have something soon.

19.01.2022 Filters How bad can they get. Every now and then we will get cars in that have supposedly been serviced but have been let down by the people servicing them and they are lucky if the oil even gets changed. These are some examples the air filter was out of a Subaru Exiga and the fuel filter from a GC8 wrx and the pollen filter out of a 3.0rb liberty.

19.01.2022 Deagrease!! This is a 3.0R liberty we had in that had been to a couple of dealerships where they both informed him that the engine had been deagreased so they could check for leaks. This was three weeks prior to the pics and the customer had not driven it for the last two. He was told that the oil cooler o rings had been replaced second dealer told him the first had not done them but they had done them for him. As you can see in the pics we cleaned it so so we could asses the oil leaks this is what we expect to see when something gets cleaned.

19.01.2022 EZ30 head gasket woes Just some pics of a H6 EZ30 engine out of a 3.0R Liberty that had blown head gaskets that we did before the break. Showing that there is a lot of work in doing a H6 and usually expensive to repair as well. There is a major difference between these and EJ engines but similar to the new FA-FB engines.

19.01.2022 Follow up on our 1,000,000km Navara. Yes its hit its million kilometres and the odometer has wound around to 0 so now its a very low km ute .

17.01.2022 Quick dump pipe mod This is a dump pipe we had to mod to suit a Forester S edition with the 5 speed auto transmission. These autos have the largest sized sump so dump pipe clearance can be an issue due to all being made for manual 5 and 6 speeds. While there we added an extra bung to the front of the cat for a AEM air fuel gauge.

17.01.2022 Machined rotors We now have our own disc machine so we have gone around the shop and found any discs we have that were still suitable for machining thickness wise. So we have a heap of machined rotors for different Subaru models. The popular ones we have are the 99 on 294 mm for the 4 spot brakes and we have a couple of STI front 5 x 100 pcd we have some std and some slotted ones which are the RDA ones.... Any std rotors are $40 and any slotted are $50 this is for a pair and they are all over there minimum thickness but some closer than others . We have a couple of rear pairs as well best give us a call and see what we have. See more

17.01.2022 Boost hose leak. This is a problem we get from time to time where the factory boost hose leaks because of the rubber ring they fit around them where the hose clamps go. It can cause problems at low speed driving to some we have had where you can hear the boost leaking on acceleration . This was one of those where you could hear it the one we had done previously the customer complained it only played up when driving slowly through car parks.

17.01.2022 This is after replacing an engine after it had severely blown the headgasket .This is what was left in the system after we drained the exhaust. After this vidio it was still steaming out the exhaust when you would pull up at the lights for thew next 20 km.

16.01.2022 Upper cylinder clean and premium fuels ??? Upper cylinder clean and 98 octane fuel do we need it. Well in our books it does this is a car we just had in which blew the head gaskets in a big way and the air filter in the last post we put up came from this car. Ended up replacing the engine with a second hand low km unit. The first three pics show the inlet ports on the old engine and the carbon build up and the last two are from some heads i have on the shelf which you can see the difference in how clean. Apart from the upper cylinder cleaner using a good fuel will help keep the ports clean as most engines we pull down the ports are clean from using 98 or premium fuel and this one was out of the ordinary for us because of how dirty it was for a fairly late model car.

16.01.2022 Square peg in a round hole. This is an engine we had come in with a misfire and was definitely a compression problem. This is what we found once we pulled it down, it only had 40,000km on it since rebuild . Some how, whoever assembled this engine obviously had a problem lining the dowel up when putting the head on and tightened it up and away it goes anyway. As you can see from the pics it was leaking water the whole time from the time it was put together. What else did we ...find...they had mixed the main bolts up and a couple of the internal washers ended up on the outside and the external solid washers ended up on the inside . Obviously the compression problem was a burnt out valve. This could be caused from a few things including the tune and even carbon build up behind the valve. On further inspection we found the cylinder in question had a five and a half thou piston to bore clearance which should have been three thou. This is caused when built the engine was not bored to suit the pistons instead std sized forged pistons were used this is why the extreme clearance. We like to go oversize and bore to suit the piston as this is the sort of problem you face when buying std size pistons. See more

15.01.2022 Earlier this year we posted that we turned 30 and promised to talk a bit about our history and how things have changed over the years. This is the first of that occasional series, we hope you like it. NRG's History How did we get here? NRG as a business started in February 1988, of course the exact date isn’t important now but I think it was the 18th or 23rd. 14.01.2022 The curse of the Brant! I'm sure I'm not the only one who will say this, but these have always been one of my Subaru pet hates. Their poor reliability means they can let you down at any time, and its usually when its most important of course. Brant Alarms and Immobilisers began to be fitted locally by Subaru Australia due to the theft rate and hijackings in the late 1990's. They arrived on the Version 5 STI as standard fitment, then the anti hijack feature was rolled out to t...he other cars with the alarm as an option. Of course no one wanted to lose their new car, so most cars were sold with both alarm and immobiliser and Subaru even recalled the MY00 up to MY01 -02 WRX models to fit them. The real issue seems to be that they were fitted by different people who had different ideas about how to achieve the wiring and usually left a mess behind. Nice. Pictured is the pile with some of the Brants we have pulled out recently. Each one of the boxes you can spot is a different car... How many can you count? If you've got a Brant and want it removed, give us a call and we can get it done for you.

13.01.2022 Follow up This is a follow up on the liberty we did late last year which had oil leaks and was told by two dealers that they had deagreased the engine but it was still filthy and had oil and crud all over the engine. this is the same car after a trip down the coast then normal mum dad type driving (only really used for school pickup) and this is what it looks like now and we can see the leaks and funnily it has not built up all that mess around the covers

13.01.2022 Under dash water leak on SH forester For the something different file had a car come in with a water leak under the dash on the passenger AC side. This would only happen when it rains .The water would come out the bottom of the blower fan so some how coming through the intake of the AC.So we pulled the wipers and cover off and flooded the area trying to see where it would come in. We found that it was missing a foam deflector piece that had come off so the water would flow into the intake hole when raining.

12.01.2022 Tyre Tips: Directional tyres vs Asymmetric tyres So what’s the difference between directional and asymmetric tread patterns: Directional tyres are ideal for sp...orty cars that drive regularly on wet roads. These tyres usually have a arrow-shaped tread pattern which aids faster water removal from the tread area for greater directional stability. Asymmetrical tread pattern have different patterns on its inner and outer shoulders. One side focuses on optimal cornering, and the other has lateral stiffness for grip in straight lines on dry surfaces. The difference of inside and outside pattern blocks ensures a quiet interior noise.

12.01.2022 Is coolant really necessary? We've noticed recently that simple coolant products are being left out of engines, instead guys are running tap water. Sounds ok, right? I mean, what's the worst that could happen??? I hope this post will give you a bit of an idea of the drama and damage that NO COOLANT could do to your engine, not just regarding boiling and freezing temperatures, but corrosion and its effects.... Oxidisation is a silent killer for your engine. Not only does it sludge up the system, it blocks radiators and coats internal galleys; reducing the heat exchange potential of the cooling system. In really bad cases it can rot the water pump impeller blades to nothing... I kid you not, we had a car came in last year like that! All this corrosion will damage and destroy both your engine and bank account in equal measure, so how do we fix this? Well, no one will be able to clean the system back to the way it was made, but we can get close. We use the Liquid intelligence Engine Cooling Systems Cleaner and Conditioner. This is a two part cleaning powder and conditioner used to flush the system. First we mix up part A, fill and bleed then alternately run and rest the engine every 10 minutes over a 3 hour period, drain and flush the system thoroughly, then mix up part B, run for 20 minutes and leave in the system for 12 hours then rinse. With the flush water coming through clean, we fill with the correct mix of coolant. Bear in mind that oxidisation corrodes the system from the inside, cleaning the system can uncover damage previously unseen. The following pictures cover the cleaning process and show the vile mess that is removed.

11.01.2022 Cheap Turbocharger repair . This is a core replacement for a 04 GT liberty we did last year. We have used these cheap replacements before and must say never had a problem with them.Always been on standard cars but we did the first one about 4 years ago and still service the car and no problems with it at all. We can do these in house

11.01.2022 Something different Here is one of our last something different for the year. Had a Toyota Hilux workmate ute come in this morning with a couple of young guys who were desperate to have it looked at cause they had to go do a job but from what i could understand it had no power and the speedo did not work. We did the usual checks under the bonnet and plugged into the computer which came up with no codes so i went for a drive. The problem was it was stuck in first gear and woul...d not change into second it was automatic transmission so slow drive back to the shop and check trans oil levels etc. This is when i was told they had run over something and had the problem from then. So lets put it up on the hoist and have a look. Ahh found the problem it had hit the speed sensor wires at the rear of the transmission and pulled them out and disconnected one of the sensors. Repaired and plugged back in went for another drive all back to normal and changed gears properly. As we were looking at the wiring noticed a hole had appeared in the transmission tunnel. When asked Mate what did you hit !! they were not very clear but some sort of parking lock or something in a car park was the answer. See more

10.01.2022 Another thrust bearing failure. Here is another clutch failure due to the thrust bearing seizing up and wearing pressure plate to the point it started breaking the fingers off. This one made a funny noise when depressing the clutch.

10.01.2022 Invidia exhaust adapters. We have a customer that was not happy with the noise level of his new STI after the usual mod list. So we made up some adapters to fit the std mufflers to the Invidia exhaust system. It still runs the full turbo back exhaust but now into the std rear mufflers. Result is now it seems to have a wider torque band and the noise is near std levels .

08.01.2022 HAVE YOU GOT A DIRT BIKE THAT OVERHEATS? Read ahead and find out how we can help you ride harder and longer with Liquid Intelligence 115 WATERLESS COOLANT! Pet...er would like to explain why Liquid Intelligence 115 is a cut above the rest: I thought you may be interested in this waterless coolant information for dirt bikes. I’m confident that Liquid Intelligence 115 would help with those summer overheating issues. Most dirt bike owners have found that it’s hard to keep their cooling system from boiling over when going slow on tight trails or in steep rough country. Our Liquid Intelligence 115 Waterless Motocross Coolant may help prevent that. This synthetic waterless coolant will double the thermal capacity of a dirt bikes cooling system and prevent overheating on demanding high torque low speed rides. When dirt bikes are manufactured they come off the production line with a 50% solution of mono ethylene glycol based antifreeze anti-boil in their cooling system. A traditional glycol solution of this activity has a boil point of about 128C to 132C. In theory this level of anti-boil protection should be more than adequate to prevent any overheating issues. But as we all know it’s hard to keep a modern dirt bike from overheating, especially when riding at low speed with high torque in steep rough country. Most bikes will overheat and sometimes boil over under these kinds of riding conditions. It wasn’t until we tested the boiling points of different glycol based coolant concentrations in a laboratory pressure vessel at 15psi that we fully understood the physics of heat dissipation in traditional coolants. What we found was that a coolants ability to dissipate and transfer heat within a cooling system is disrupted at a temperature much lower than its stated boiling point. We called this the vapour blanketing point. We think that the vapour blanketing point has far more significance and importance to the performance of a coolant than a boiling point has. The vapour blanketing point of a coolant is the point at which it starts to fail. whilst the boiling point of a coolant is when it has completely failed. The vapour blanketing point of a 50% solution of mono ethylene glycol based coolant in a radiator using a 15psi pressure cap is between 93C to 95C. When a 50% active coolant reaches this temperature it starts to boil on the internal walls of the water jacket forming a layer of fine vapour. This insulating blanket of vapour reduces the efficiency of the entire cooling system to transfer heat from the block. When this happens, heat that it is still being generated in the block is not being dissipated and transferred through the cooling system as fast as it’s being made. So the cooling system temperature and the block temperature become out-of-sync with each other. The block temperature will continues to increase exponentially beyond its normal safe operating range. Once the engine is shut off and the coolant is no longer circulating through the radiator the greater block temperature transfers into the coolant. If the block temperature has exceeded the boiling point of the coolant it will boil over. Most bike owners after a demanding ride have experienced boil over. Their coolant temperature would have gone beyond 140C > for that to happen. A dirt bikes normal running temperature is about 90C. On hot days with low airflow on steep rough trails the engine temperature will always have the potential of reaching or exceeding the vapour blanketing point of about >93C. A Conventional 50/50 glycol water coolant with a vapour blanketing point of between 93C to 95C does not always provide enough extra thermal capacity to prevent overheating under these types of riding conditions. The Liquid Intelligence 115 Waterless Motocross Coolant has a boil point of 245C and a vapour blanketing point of about 190C which will double the thermal capacity of a dirt bikes cooling system. Under similar extreme riding conditions when the coolant temperature has exceeded 93C our waterless coolant will not vapour blanket..It will continue to maintain contact with the internal walls of the water jacket, dissipating the heat and dumping it through the radiator efficiently.Well after a conventional 50% coolant would have started to fail. The main difference between using a conventional water glycol coolant and our Liquid Intelligence 115 Waterless Coolant in a dirt bike could be summarized this way: A water glycol 50% coolant has less than half the thermal capacity of a waterless coolant and can allow for huge differences to develop between the block temperature and the radiator temperature. Whilst a waterless coolants greater thermal capacity ensures that the cooling system temperature and the block temperature remain in sync with each other. Thus maintaining normal running temperature parameters in both the cooling system and the block even under demanding high torque low speed rides. You can also read more about Liquid Intelligence 115 in the attached magazine below. 05.01.2022 Cracked dump pipe This is the result of no brackets on the dump pipe against the gearbox. this car had the front one cut off and the rear had broken over time causing it to crack around the flange at the turbo end as the whole exhaust is flexing off the turbo. we have even seen them loosen up pipes as well. This is another reason they need flex joints in them after the last bracket as well.Easy fix make up some new brackets and re weld them on .

03.01.2022 Beware of imitations This car came from another shop which had problems with running extremely rich they had gone through all the normal checks They had replaced the airflow meter and it was brand new.It was that bad that it was driven over with the air flow meter disconnected because when you connected it it stalled instantly.First thing we saw was the funny looking air flow meter so got one of my test units and fitted it and bingo problem solved. We get to see these sort of meters time to time had more problems than not and they went back got another one from the supplier and it worked fine. Moral of the story sometimes when you replace something it can still be the problem even if its a new one.

01.01.2022 Quick clutch job !!!! Last night we thought we would stay back and replace the clutch in a XT forester we had come in with a clutch bearing problem plus the usual heavy pedal. Well what we thought would be a standard clutch change with a new clutch fork and pivot has turned into a major operation. Now its turned into a replace gearbox or strip down and try and get some cases to put the gearset into them. This is becoming a standard problem with the push style clutches why Subaru went away from the pull style clutch is beyond me we never see this sort of problem with the pull type.As usual it had a very heavy pedal to start with before it started making noise.
