24.01.2022 Happy World Rivers Day!! World Rivers Day was created to increase awareness of the protection of our rivers and it has become one of the largest environmental celebrations on the planet . How can you celebrate? Why don't you visit kanamaluka/Tamar estuary and the North or South Esk rivers this weekend? Go fishing, go for a paddle, take a picture of your favourite shorefront. If you see a piece of plastic, don't be shy, pick it up and put it in a bin. It is ours to enjoy an...d ours to take care of! This photo captures a gloriously serene morning on the Tamar. 24.01.2022 Eagle, Birdie or Bandicoot? Congratulations to Exeter Golf Club on planting its first 250 native seedlings as part of a project to extend habitat for eastern barred bandicoot! These plants are a fantastic addition to the club's scenic fairways by revegetating ‘no-play zones’. Work will continue over the next few years as part of NRM North’s project ‘Safeguarding northern Tasmania as a refuge for eastern barred bandicoot and other threatened species’, funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program #NLP

23.01.2022 Are you heading to the beach these holidays? Please tread carefully. Hooded plovers and other shorebirds along our popular east coast and Flinders Island beaches are busy breeding. Hooded plovers camouflage their nests and eggs so well that you may not notice until it is too late and crack! So please be a good egg and share the shoreline by staying on the wet sand. Keep an eye out for signage and please don't linger too long if you notice hooded plovers nearby. #NLP #K...nowYourPlover #protectinghoodedplover Hooded Plover Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service See more

17.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who participated in today's Tamar Discovery Day - it was a terrific day. We learned a lot and had some fun. Special thanks to Seahorse World for providing such a fabulous venue and Petuna for sponsorship.

17.01.2022 Today is International Plover Appreciation Day aimed at raising awareness of the plight of ground-nesting plover species around the world. Hooded plovers are a national threatened species with one of their best defenses camouflage - being their worst enemy. Chicks and eggs can easily be accidentally trodden on, on a busy beach. Walk easy on the beach this summer by sticking to the wet sand and keeping pets on a lead. NRM North's ‘Defending the hood’ project is hoping more p...eople can get to #KnowYourPlover. BirdLife Australia is hosting information sessions on hooded plovers online through Eventbrite. 16.01.2022 A "giant" congratulations go to the Coote and Goodacre families for their riverbank revegetation efforts! As a part of NRM North's efforts to protect and extend habitat for giant freshwater lobster, in time, these seedlings will improve the stream for lobsters to thrive. The lobster homes will soon have more shade, cooler waters and stable river banks. These plantings strategically connect river reaches which allow lobsters to travel and breed over a longer distance. Many thanks to volunteers Lars, Justin and Lisa for getting their hands dirty to help such an iconic threatened species! NRM North supports the 'Partnerships for Giant Freshwater Lobster Recovery' project through funding from the Australian Government's National Landcare Program. #NLP

06.01.2022 NRM North volunteers are active this week counting sightings of the threatened hooded plover on the north east and Flinders Island beaches as part of a biennial count. Staying off of the dunes and keeping to the hard wet sand, binoculars are a must to spot these little creatures - especially if chicks are suspected! An update on numbers will be provided when the data is back in and collated. 02.01.2022 Transpiration + evaporation = Evapotranspiration! A very cool word - especially for gardeners and irrigators when paired with a Bureau of Meteorology tool that gives timely data for your decision on when to water the garden/paddock. Directions for use: Hover your mouse on a location (Launceston is a great place to start ). The response will provide a table with the last seven days of rainfall and evaporation rate. The graph does the maths and tells you the evapotranspiration balance. If the week has a negative evapotranspiration rate it may indicate that it is time to water the garden! For happy and hydrated soils please visit: http://www.bom.gov.au/watl/eto/
