18.01.2022 After green sea turtle Billie was spotted by concerned diver Tamila Dalila at Cabbage Tree Bay reserve in Manly, he was diagnosed with a potentially fatal blood disease, septicaemia. Tamila and other locals set up a GoFundMe page to cover vet, food and medicine bills, and a team of volunteers from Australian Seabird Rescue, including Robert Olive, Alison Taylor and her daughter Kelsey, nursed Billie to health. After months of rehabilitation, Billie was released back into the bay on October 11 by Kelsey. He’s since been spotted twice and looks fantastic, says Alison. I’m hoping he goes out there and has lots and lots of babies. Learn more about ‘Team Billie’ here http://go.nrma.com.au/TeamBillie.

15.01.2022 For years she worked behind the scenes of reality TV shows, as a medic. But soon enough Chris Cleary realised that her real passion lay in a very different reality. Sydney’s homeless needed help. Chris founded StreetMed in 2014, a group who provide first aid, medical check-ups, mental health support and even advocacy for those living rough on the streets of Western Sydney. Despite receiving no government support, Chris, who was once homeless herself, says No-one else was off...ering street-level care for the homeless. Over time she’d noticed the impact of sleeping rough, with many self-harming, getting physically abused or suffering mental health issues. I don't think it matters whether you're homeless or you're sitting in the backyard. Everybody should have empathy towards their fellow human being. It doesn't matter what your circumstances are. We all bleed red. Read all about Chris’s journey here http://go.nrma.com.au/ChrisCleary. See more

13.01.2022 Noel and Trish Butler’s dreams went up in smoke last summer when bushfires tore through Nura Gunyu, their bush paradise on pristine bushland in Morton, near Ulladulla on the NSW South Coast. For 20 years it had been their home and a place where they helped teach First Nations culture and bush tucker to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Since then, thousands of volunteers have come to help them rebuild buying and planting trees and helping to reconstruct their cultural c...entre. People are continually telling us how gratified they are for all we’ve done and what we've given to so many people, says Noel, a Budawang Elder from the Yuin Nation. It’s why so many people turn up here they want to help us get back on our feet. It gives other people satisfaction, knowing they've given us something back that they've done something for us. 01.01.2022 Koalas around Port Macquarie can rest a bit easier with the help of nine-year-old Araminta Walker. Like so many of us, Araminta was devastated by the images of injured koalas during last summer’s bushfires. So when Port Macquarie-Hastings Council ran a competition to design a koala crossing road sign, she was the perfect girl for the job. After the fires, I felt sorry for the koalas because they couldn’t evacuate like we did, so I thought it’s a good thing to try and help th...em, says Araminta. After winning the competition, Araminta was presented with an adoption certificate for a resident koala at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital named Lismore Rose. It’s only deepened her love for these unique animals. It’s important to help because they are an endangered species. I hope when I grow up there will still be koalas in this world it would be very sad if there were no koalas. [Araminta Walker Laurieton, NSW]
