23.01.2022 Private Forests Tasmania have launched a series of videos sharing the experiences of Tasmanian farmers who are using trees to help them achieve their goals - preventing erosion, improving water quality, boosting farm resilience and productivity, absorbing carbon, growing timber and biofuel. Hosted by Sally Dakis, journalist and ex-presenter of Tasmanian Country Hour on ABC Radio, we meet some of the farmers, researchers and experts as they recount their real-life stories. https://www.treealliance.com.au/resources/video_series

23.01.2022 Planning to get out and about across the State over the holidays? A reminder that it only takes a few moments to check, clean and dry your gear between locations to avoid spreading pests and diseases, which can easily hitch-hike on mountain bikes, 4WDs, kayaks, hiking boots or fishing gear. Check out our biosecurity resources page for more information. https://www.nrmsouth.org.au/biosecurity/

23.01.2022 A new citizen science-based toolkit is helping land managers and community groups monitor Tasmania’s Little Penguins and manage threats to their colonies. The toolkit, developed by Cradle Coast Authority in partnership with DPIPWE, provides guidance on survey methods that community groups can use to monitor changes to penguin populations in their local area. The toolkit is available at www.dpipwe.tas.gov.au/toolkit

22.01.2022 What a great collaboration between conservation and industry

22.01.2022 In recognition of NAIDOC week, this fascinating piece in The Conversation investigates new findings into Tasmania's First Nations people's relationships with the Tasmanian landscape. The way Tasmanian Aboriginal people hunted, gathered and used fire had a major influence on the structure, function and distribution of today’s plant and animal communities, which has big implications for conservation today.

22.01.2022 If you're planning a walk, run, ride or picnic in Wellington Park this weekend keep an eye out for our mountain ambassador Pip at either the Springs or the summ...it. As well as helping people find the best tracks and trails to explore Pip is also seeking help looking for an environmentally harmful, weedy invader, the orange hawkweed! If you spot a plant that looks like orange hawkweed in Wellington Park please report it via our website: www.hobartcity.com.au/ohw We need all eyes on the ground over summer to keep kunanyi/Mt Wellington's sensitive alpine environment safe from this aggressive little weed, which is the focus of a City of Hobart eradication program. 16.01.2022 Registrations for the second round of the Derwent Pasture Network’s ‘Grazing Time’ dryland pasture course are now open. Tailored to semi-arid areas in the Derwent, the course is the first of its kind in Tasmania and is ideal for farmers wanting to improve the management of their dryland pastures. Developed with the expertise of the Derwent Catchment Project (DCP), this course is part of a broader Pasture Information Project being delivered in partnership with NRM South. Reg...istrations close on the 20th May, with the first workshop starting in late May. The course will run for a year across seven workshops, and will be offered annually. For more information or to register, contact Eve Lazarus [email protected] | 0429 170 048. For more information about the Derwent Pasture Network, visit https://www.pasturenetwork.org/ Led by DCP, the Derwent Pasture Network is an innovative project tailored specifically for Derwent Catchment farmers. Locally relevant information is being provided via a farmer-to-farmer mentoring program, discussion groups, the Grazing Time course and six demonstration sites. This project is supported by NRM South through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment

15.01.2022 Splish splash I was taking a bath how was I to know there was a bird tour going on?! One of the highlights from this weekend’s free guided tour at Inala Nature Tours was catching sight of this swiftie taking a dip in the Inala creek. This beautiful parrot species is critically endangered and, to ensure its survival, it is essential to conserve mature eucalypt dominated forests and woodlands both for food resources and for the formation of suitable nesting hollows. It looks like they might be partial to a nice bit of creek frontage too! This event was supported by NRM South through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

15.01.2022 Awesome effort by our project partners Enviro-Dynamics in getting these precious Morrisby's gum seedlings out into the community!

15.01.2022 November 20 is National Agriculture Day - so it's the perfect opportunity to showcase some of the great work that NRM South does working with partners and landholders in the agriculture sector. Through funding from State and Federal government, NRM South works with partners such as @derwentcatchmentproject @TasInAg @TFGAComms councils and individual landholders to improve agricultural landscapes and keep them healthy so that they can return long-term dividends to farmers, the community, the environment and the economy. Take a look at our Agriculture Program summary video for more https://youtu.be/vGoH-54qtz4 and find out more about National Agriculture Day at the link https://www.agday.org.au/

13.01.2022 It’s becoming more common to think about the ethics of many of our daily choices. Ethical banks, ethically sourced ingredients, ethical cosmeticsbut have you ever considered the ethics of wildlife photography? The old adage of taking nothing but photos came long before the advent of social media, where the pursuit of exceptional images can cause issues for our wildlife and landscapes. If you’d like to know more about how to be a responsible nature photographer, check out our free online guide which is packed with useful tips. https://www.nrmsouth.org.au//17_10_24_NRM2866-Ethical-Phot

12.01.2022 Just a reminder that there are still places available on this free Swift Parrot tour on Bruny Island this Saturday. Follow the eventbrite link to book your spot.

11.01.2022 Eastern Quolls were once widespread across southeast Australia but became extinct on the mainland about 50 years ago. One of the threats facing Eastern quolls is from feral or roaming cats - who compete with them for food and prey on young quolls. They are also at risk of disease transmission (toxoplasmosis) from cats. We are working with partners on Bruny Island on a project to remove feral and stray cats, contain domestic cats and help improve conditions for the island’s quoll population. For more information, visit https://nrmsouth.org.au/eastern-quoll-bruny-island/ This project is supported by NRM South through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program

09.01.2022 In 2018, the Bookend Trust launched the citizen science project Where? Where? Wedgie! to monitor and guide recovery efforts for the Endangered Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle, and involve more Tasmanians in threatened species science and conservation. This progress report presents the essential findings.

07.01.2022 Heading outdoors this weekend? Why not take 10 minutes to contribute some data to the wild pollinator count? You have until 15 November to contribute. Head to https://wildpollinatorcount.com/ for more information.

05.01.2022 At a recent field day in Bothwell, local farmers learned more about how sheep farmer Richard Ellis is using drought lotting to reduce pressure on dryland pasture paddocks. Thanks to a 15k Landcare Tasmania grant, Richard developed an external feeding trough that aimed to be as labour-efficient as possible. Richard’s approach is a great example of the skills that exist within the farming community and how this innovation is being put into practice. Through the Derwent Catchme...nt Project's Derwent Pasture Network, this local knowledge and expertise is being shared to the wider agricultural community and builds on the initial investment from Landcare Tasmania. The Derwent Pasture Network, supported by NRM South through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, seeks to answer difficult questions, explore management options and support effective decision making in dryland grazing management. 01.01.2022 This weekend (May 22nd) we celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity. Tasmania is home to thousands of species. Some are rare or endangered, and some are found nowhere else on Earth. This week we’ll be shining a spotlight on some of the nationally significant species we are helping to protect through our work with partners across southern Tasmania - funded by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.... Check out this video featuring our Senior Environment Officer Maudie explaining why these projects are so important. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuGFMTNv7OQ
