22.01.2022 Yesterday I did an inspection of one of my log hives that I had set up for an Eduction split. Eduction split is a method of dividing a native hive that is less stressful on the bees. It tries to exploit their natural approach to creating a new hive. A tube is placed from the hive into the back of an empty hive, forcing the bees to travel through that hive to exit. Eventually the bees start to fill out that empty hive, and when they are ready, the bees will send a new queen into the new hive, effectively creating a new hive. https://youtu.be/2gL0M-jHJ8Q

15.01.2022 After many hours in front of some noisy machinery the cypress pine has been dressed and prepared for making native bee hives

12.01.2022 I have been down in the workshop creating a new hive. I have been asked to help someone with a beehive (I will be doing a different video about that) but one requirement was that I would need to mount a hive on a wall about 3 1/2 meters off the ground. My cypress hives are a bit too heavy so I have created an insulated marine ply hive. Here is a video showing how I put it together: https://youtu.be/OlLJnfmYm48

10.01.2022 After we split the stump we were able to get the hive out without having to disturb the brood. And it fit nicely into the waiting hive box too

07.01.2022 Today one of my hives came under attack by another hive in what is known as an attack swarm. In an attack swarm a stronger hive attacks a weaker hive with the intent of killing all of the bees in the hive and taking it over with their own queen. I was luck in that the hive that was attacked was set up as an eduction so I have been able to separate the mother hive and with a bit of luck, the attack hive may take over the child hive from the eduction. I have taken a video of ...the hive inspections that I performed today to keep track of what has occurred. It is all very interesting (and a bit sad to see all the dead bees around). https://youtu.be/2aonkP6nCjw See more
