22.01.2022 Remember if you are a victim or a witness of a crime, you have rights! You have the right to tell police what’s happened and to have a support person with you. You also have the right to communication assistance. In 2017 we collaborated with Legal Services Commission of South Australia and South Australia Police in the creation of RIGHTS ON SHOW! We are very proud of our performers Anton Sagrillo, Ryan Rowland, Jessica Agius and Rachel High who acted out scenarios on how to report a crime in photo stories accompanied with an easy-read factsheet that have been designed for people with intellectual disability or cognitive impairment. 13.01.2022 SAME-SAME SPOTLIGHT ON KARI AND KAVITHA Meet these two visionary women behind No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability and DADC. Without the trust and friendship of these two extraordinary, talented women, SAME-SAME would not have happened! Kari Seeley is the acting CEO of No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability. With over 30 years of experience in administration, management and business, Kari has been with No Strings for 6 years. Kari also works as a professional voice...-over artist and provides Audio Description for blind/vision-impaired people, mostly for live performance. On top of all this her current academic research is focussed on disability access to the performing arts. Kavitha Krishnan is the Artistic Director of MAYA DANCE THEATRE, a non-profit performing arts company founded in 2007. In 2018, Kavitha founded DADC made up of performers with different abilities as part of MDT. Kavitha values dance as a medium for communication and building connections. Kari enjoys music every day in her life. Whether that’s her playing the piano or at just dinner parties with friends. In her earlier years Kari enjoyed performing in school plays and musicals, as well as some amateur productions in her early 20s. Kavitha has been dancing since the age of three. When she was 21, Kavitha had a spinal cord injury and she had to refrain from physical activities. But it was dance that uplifted her and gave her a purpose to move on and She continued dancing with cautions to her physical self. Kavitha’s journey continues in the arts and she hopes to inspire younger ones to enjoy the arts, use the value of the arts to promote empathy and care; to believe in the philosophy of The Art of Living. This project would not be the same if it wasn’t for these two wonderful women behind these great organisations! Catch SAME-SAME, an inclusive online collaboration between Australia and Singapore. 12.01.2022 SAME-SAME is being guided by experienced theatre directors Emma Beech (Australia) and Jeffrey Tan (Singapore). The online inclusive project brought the two creatives together online to get to know each other, to co-create the inclusive work between No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability and DADC. Let’s get to know Emma and Jeffrey a little better. Emma lives in the southern wine region of Adelaide while Jeffrey lives in the cosy estate of Shunfu at the central north of Si...ngapore. They both started dancing and performing at young ages. Emma recalls escaping from her mother’s arm to dance on stage at her sister’s school concert while Jeffrey started dancing in kindergarten and acted in nearly every other church Sunday school's skit. At the age of six, Emma started making shows for her mum in her bedroom. Transitioning into adulthood she graduated from Flinders Drama Centre, and has been working on stage and screen since. Jeffrey participated in professional theatre with Act 3 (Singapore’s first professional English children’s theatre) when he was 13. He became a stage manager when he was 16 and a director when he turned 19. The confinement that COVID brings has also brought more creativity and use of technology which SAME-SAME would not exist without. While these two have never met face-to-face they have formed a bond over the course of this project and hopefully when restrictions lift, they can meet outside of the computer screen. 11.01.2022 Do you want to know the face behind our amazing poster? Faizal is the designer behind all our amazing SAME-SAME art! When asked about designing the SAME-SAME poster this is what he had to say:... I take my design work very seriously, and with Same-Same, I’ve strived to create visuals that will catch people’s attention and give them something to think about. Designing is a very calculated tasks believe it or not. Given the dimensions of the artwork and the content given, I have to carefully craft how I layout the design and make sure that it’s not too wordy and not too empty. The right balance is key in maximising, what I call, the ‘real estate’. We are always thinking about how different we are from other people - the way we look, the way we talk, the way we dress, how about instead we look into what’s same-same, we are more similar than we think we are. Come watch SAME-SAME! Catch SAME-SAME, an inclusive online collaboration between Australia and Singapore. Singapore International Foundation Arts For Good Project. 10.01.2022 SAME-SAME SPOTLIGHT ON JASPREET & KOBI Jaspreet Kaur Sekhon is a founding member of DADC, an experienced performer, a teacher and a self-advocate who spoke for the UN Conference on World Down Syndrome Day (2014). Kobi Taylor is known as the queen of one-liners of the SAME-SAME team and always brings irrepressible joy when performing with No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability. Past performances include Re-Connect (2016 - 2019) and Ignition Point (Adelaide Fringe 2019).... Both Jaspreet and Kobi have always had an interest in drama. In kindergarten Jaspreet took part in a Christmas play which evolved into speech and drama lessons. Jaspreet’s love for dance started soon after her first solo dance at school and she hasn’t stopped since. Kobi has been a performer throughout her life but like Jaspreet she really came into her own when participating in drama classes and a few school plays. She has a great attitude to life and enjoys being a performer. Jaspreet and Kobi both have enjoyed making new friends throughout this experience. Kobi’s favourite thing about performing is being part of a group that has fun together while Jaspreet said that it’s been a great team to work with and she can’t wait until the performance. We’ll leave you with a one-liner from Kobi and remember I Be OK because that is my name backwards. Catch Jaspreet and Kobi in SAME-SAME, an inclusive online collaboration between Australia and Singapore. A Singapore International Foundation Arts For Good Project. Fri 13 Nov and Sat 14 Nov 2020. #samesame, #nostrings, #dadcsin,#SingaporeInternationalFoundation, #artsforgood
08.01.2022 SAME-SAME SPOTLIGHT ON MICHAELA & SUBASTIAN Michaela Cantwell is a collaborator on the SAME-SAME project and works with No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability. Before No Strings Michaela Cantwell was a well-known actor in her own right. She has an incredible body of work as both an actor and theatre-maker. Some of her works include The Marriage of Figaro (2009), The King Is Dead! (2012) and Innocence (2000). Working with Brink Productions, State Theatre Company South Aus...tralia and so many other companies across Australia makes us really proud to call Michaela part of our team. Michaela’s path has not always been an easy one. She came to No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability after she had stroke now almost 10 years ago. Doctors said she would have to take a year off to learn how to walk and regain her use of her left arm. In less than that time she was casted in a feature film directed by SA's Rolf de Heer, The King is Dead. Nothing can stop this dynamite of a person Subastian started out as a hip-hop dancer and joined MAYA DANCE THEATRE in 2016. Subastian also is the programme leader of DADC, a community initiative made up of people with mixed abilities; they come together to co-exist in a space to share their passion for dance. Like Michaela his love for dance and music started at a young age. When Subastian was 16 he fell into the world of dance, the arts and all the possibilities they could bring him. Subastian aims to continuously explore new forms of movements and work as a project artist in independent works. We are so lucky to have him onboard the SAME-SAME project! 07.01.2022 aaaaand that's a wrap! Thank you to everyone that came and saw SAME-SAME over the weekend! We were absolutely blown away by the response and enthusiasm of the crowd both in person and over Zoom ... We feel very luck that we were able to showcase SAME-SAME at all, especially in light of the new restrictions in SA overnight. The themes of human connection and friendship are more important than ever, as we navigate through this global pandemic. But we don't have to do it alone! This creative showing was hopefully just the start of more international collaborations to come! Congrats to all involved. Heartfelt thanks to all our partners who made this creative development possible!
