25.01.2022 Challenging times ... This is some powerful writing indeed. The journalist who wrote the piece - Mark Mordue - is a very old and dear friend of mine, he was best man at my two weddings! ... I think we have a serious learning opportunity here at the moment. It is very important to make a study of the impact upon the labour market of Covid-19. The task is to differentiate between the jobs and roles that are vulnerable; and those that have proven resilient; and to create career plans that move us towards the latter. Education is so important. Likewise, making the most of your education is so important. That can be a hard message to hear when you are a teenager but life can really teach you the hard way if you fail to heed the message. If I can go all pop culture on you for just a moment ... whatever ghetto you happen to be in, education is the ONLY way out of it, in my view.

25.01.2022 I took a stroll through the new gym today and it is AMAZING!!! As I explored the magnificent new space, I was having fantasies of the defeats that would be visited upon future Melbourne basketball and futsal teams. The old gym has a new roof which doesn't leak and is also looking refreshed. Speaking as the water polo coach, I was sad that there was no sting of chlorinated water in my nostrils that might have suggested the presence of a water polo pool but, of course, I WOULD say that! But ... there's always the top of C block, right?

24.01.2022 Plastics have been such an incredible and relatively recent technological development that are now out of control. Sadly, it will be up to current and future generations to clean up the mess. The gross plastics are just the tip of the iceberg. Imagine all the plastics at the bottom of our oceans and in the guts of our sea, bird and terrestrial fauna. If I was Bill gates or Jeff Bezos with squillions in a foundation to bestow on research, I would definitely be putting BILLIONS into this problem.

20.01.2022 Greetings Boys University of Sydney Open day - Saturday 31st August UNSW Open Day - Saturday 7th September... Uni Open Days .... Why should you bother!! Right up until the moment that you click ACCEPT on the university and course of your choice in late December or January, you are in RESEARCH mode regarding your post-school options. Open Days give you a unique chance to speak with current students and academic staff in the faculty (ies) of your interest. You should go and ask questions, have conversations and gather information. Especially in the Sciences, there are many more options for subjects you can choose. If you are considering Engineering, you could go and find out about the different types of Engineering and really drill down into what the course looks like. You should make sure that it matches your strengths, interests and abilities. You could look into the Applied Science degrees in Allied Health ... including radiology, pharmacy, speech pathology, occupational therapy, psychology, physiotherapy and exercise physiology. Go and speak with the Business School. Find out about the various majors. Look into globval exchange. Find out about scholarships. Speak with UNSW Co-op. Investigate the Sydney Scholars scholarship or the IT and Engineering Scholarship offered by USyd that is their version of the UNSW Co-op. Get out there and act like investigative journalists! Ask questions ... engage in conversations ... explore the clubs and social activities that you might like to engage in which is the way you meet people and make friends at university. I have been conducting Destination Surveys for NSB alumni since 2016. I have learnt that it is quite common for our alumni to change courses in first or second year. It is absolutely fine to do this although changing courses does cost you money and time lost. Doing your due diligence NOW is a smart idea! And it will be a fun day out!

16.01.2022 Jesse only studied language subjects for his HSC, taking three units of French and Latin as well as Chinese and four units of English. "In year 11, I had three units of math and chemistry, and I was like, 'I'm going to get rid of (extension) English because I hate English'," he said. (Two units of English are compulsory in the HSC.) ''I had in fact handed in all the pertinent paperwork but then had to snatch it off someone's desk. "Obviously I changed my mind. I had an inspir...ational teacher ... she sat me down and said, 'I really think you should consider English and extension English'. Cranbrook allowed me to do this niche, uncommon selection of subjects which allowed me to excel." He is hoping to study medieval languages at Cambridge, and then aims for a career in diplomacy or academia. Adam said his three first-in-course awards were unexpected. I didnt even come out of the exams thinking Wow that was amazing, he said. But its all hard to predict. I just tried to pick what I enjoy doing, and it was good to have a bit of a mix.

13.01.2022 A career as a spy may become more mainstream with new data indicating their jobs will be among the fastest-growing in Australia in the next few years. The latest figures from the Department of Employment predicts intelligence and policy analysts jobs will increase by more than a third to 40,200 in the five years from May 2018 to May 2023. Jobs growth for psychologists, adventure guides and audiologists are also being forecast. Personal assistants, the retail sector, switchboa...rd operators and secretaries are among the jobs in decline with 13,600 fewer secretaries forecast to be employed in five years, a decline of almost a third. Overall employment is predicted to grow by 7 per cent or 886,100 jobs with many of these likely to be part-time with an increase from 20.4 per cent to 31.7 per cent over the 30 years to May 2019.
