21.01.2022 Eating your dinner at least 2 hours before going to sleep or prior to 9pm has been linked with a reduced incidence of prostate cancer in the order 26% compared to those who go to bed within 2 hours of eating dinner or have dinner after 9pm. The results were published earlier this year by Kogevinas et. al. in the International Journal of Cancer. The Spanish study looked at 621 men with prostate cancer and compared them with a control group. The subjects were all interviewed in... relation to sleep and meal timing. Interestingly, night shift workers were excluded from the study. The study also similarly looked at any association with breast cancer & found a similar 16% reduction in those that eat dinner prior to 9pm or at least 2 hours prior to going to bed. 20.01.2022 For many men we see with incontinence symptoms, they often have great concern about leaving their homes or other familiar places . One of the big reasons for this is not knowing whether there will be toilets where they are going and where they are located . Good news! There is actually a government website, call the National Public Toilet Map which maps out where toilets are located & other relevant information. A great tool to help those with incontinence plan their outings

12.01.2022 Cyclists listen up I'm frequently asked by men about the appropriateness of various forms of exercise, especially the impact of cycling on sexual function, urinary function, prostatitis & saddle region soreness/numbness. Good news! A large study published in Oct 2017 showed the following in respect to cycling , compared to runners and swimmers :... * Cycling had no effect on urinary function, * Cycling actually has a slightly protective effect on erectile dysfunction. * Standing whilst cycling for >20% of the time resulted in significantly odds of experiencing saddle region numbness, * Having the handlebars level o with or higher than the saddle resulted in lower odds of saddle region numbness or sores, * Cycling did result in significantly higher rates of urethral stricture (narrowing of the urethra). 11.01.2022 What is a nerve sparing radical prostatectomy? A radical prostatectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the entirety of the prostate gland, usually due to the presence of cancer within the prostate. A nerve sparing radical prostatectomy is where the nerves around the prostate gland (prostatic nerve plexus) are preserved whilst the prostate gland is removed. The prostatic nerve plexus is intricately wrapped directly around the prostate gland and is highly susceptible to injur...y. These nerves are responsible for erectile function and as such damage to these nerves typically leads to erectile dysfunction. It is also possible that damage to these nerves can contribute to urinary incontinence as well. ..... The study revealed that there was no difference between the 2 method in relation to preserving continence & erectile function.... 03.01.2022 "I'm having a prostatectomy, when do I need to come in for physio?" This is something that we are asked all the time. The best time to start physiotherapy is at least a few weeks PRIOR to surgery. Doing this gives you the best chance of minimising the duration and extent of any urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction following surgery. There are a number of research papers supporting this view, including one published in 2016 by Sathianathen et al., which showed that co...mmencing a structured pelvic floor physiotherapy program prior to surgery led to 75.6% reduction in urinary leakage at 3 months after surgery compared to men who only started physiotherapy after surgery. #prostate #prostatectomy #physiotherapy #physio #pelvicfloor #incontinence"

03.01.2022 Something a little random for your Friday...REDHEADS ARE LESS LIKELY TO DEVELOP PROSTATE CANCER A 2013 study published in the British Journal of Cancer, revealed that natural redheads had a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer compared to all other hair colours. The reduced risk was roughly half of that of all other hair colours. This is a one of a kind study and the results need to be interpreted carefully. The study was conducted on the back of a larger study of F...innish men aged 50-69, all of whom were smokers. The original study was looking at the effect of various supplements on cancer incidence. The results relating to hair colour came from a follow-up questionnaire, which ascertained a number of character traits from the participants. The total number of men involved in the study was almost 21000. The mechanism for why the reduced risk occurs in redheads is not well understood. It is believed to be linked to changes in the MC1R gene, which is associated with having red hair colour. Ref: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23860522
