25.01.2022 The set up may have looked a little different to what we're used to... but the ensemble music was still exceptional! Congratulations to all our performers and conductors in the 2020 NSSWE Showcase Concert. Thank you to our NSSWE staff who pulled off a small miracle, working within Covid restrictions, to get our four ensembles together again and playing onstage at the Concourse in Chatswood. And the sellout audience who supported the event!

24.01.2022 Interested to know more about NSSWE? Read our latest Q&A with current SWE member, Matilda: How many years have you been with NSSWE? I joined NSSWE in year 7 as a percussionist who played drum kit for my school band. Since then I have come a long way, moving to tuned and mallet percussion and progressed to the Senior Wind Ensemble where I continue to learn to play many new and unique percussion instruments. ... Where was the photo with this post taken? This photo is from NSSWE’s Annual Showcase Concert. We played a piece called Frozen Cathedral by John Mackey which has 10 percussion parts! We were joined by professional percussionists in our section for the incredible performance. What do you love about NSSWE? I have made lifelong friends at NSSWE and we get together on weekends and holidays. I look forward to every band tour because it’s like going on a trip with my friends. The USA trip in 2019 has been a highlight of my time at NSSWE! Why should other young musicians join NSSWE? With NSSWE I perform on stage in a professional setting multiple times a year which is an opportunity most of my school friends don’t receive. Join us, you’ll love it! https://www.nsswe.org/auditions2021/

22.01.2022 NSSWE students were very happy to be back together (but socially distanced!) for the first week of term 4. All of our wind ensembles are rehearsing with some modifications to ensure the safety of our talented musicians. The smiles on our SWE students' faces on Thursday were worth the hard work! Thank you to all of NSSWE parents and carers for following our new COVID-19 guidelines and continuing to support NSSWE. ... We are also very grateful for the tireless work of RIVMEO (Roundtable of Instrumental, Vocal and Music Education Organisations) who have been advocating for the easing of restrictions on playing, singing and learning music in NSW, to ensure a path forward for organisations such as ours. We all believe in the importance of imparting a love of music onto young people! Thank you RIVMEO for everything you have achieved for the continuation of music across NSW.

21.01.2022 Our #NSSWEConnect Festival event partner Online Virtuoso has just launched a new platform #OnlineVirtuosoLive - connecting students with incredible musicians from around Australia. If you're a flute player, make sure you check out their upcoming event with flautist Derek Jones!

14.01.2022 Term 3 brought many highlights for NSSWE students including lessons led by renowned Australian jazz drummer and big band master John Morrison! The workshops were part of NSSWE's COVID-19 safe program for the term. Over five weeks our conductors delivered a new rehearsal format of fun, interactive, class-based workshops, focussed on some of the most important skills that make the musician. Have a listen to John putting our musicians through their paces practicing advanced rhythmic skills - enjoy the beats!

08.01.2022 NSSWE runs a one of a kind program for senior musicians, NSSWE Plus. Learn more about the unique program in our Q&A with current student, Jenny: What do you do at the NSSWE plus sessions? One of the many things we do at NSSWE Plus is develop our conducting technique by leading chorales in a chamber group setting. NSSWE’s Artistic Director Patrick Brennan creates hands on workshops for each session so members of the group can experiment and practice, and in the process receiv...e valuable feedback to assist in building our skills. We all take turns either conducting or playing in the ensemble, which is fun. What do you enjoy most about being involved with NSSWE plus? NSSWE Plus offers me opportunities that are incredibly difficult for young musicians and conductors to find. I have had opportunities to conduct and rehearse the NSSWE ensembles as well as participate in professional development courses provided by NSSWE. Noted workshops include one with Dr Mary Schneider while the SWE ensemble was on tour in America in 2019. Most of all I really enjoy being involved in a community of young musicians with similar interests as myself. What has been a highlight of your involvement with NSSWE Plus? In 2018 I was asked to direct a flute ensemble involving the students from the NSSWE intermediate ensemble. We would rehearse weekly and performed at the NSSWE Showcase on the Chatswood Concourse concert hall stage. This marked my debut performance conducting! The following year in 2019 I was contacted by Australian International Music Festival through NSSWE, they asked me to join their team to work at the festival another incredible experience to add to my resume. https://www.nsswe.org/auditions2021/

03.01.2022 Did you miss us live? This time last weekend we were speaking with an incredible line up of musicians at our interactive #NSSWEConnect Festival. If you were unable to join us live, there is still time to watch all the workshops while they are online! Log-in here https://www.crowdcast.io/e/nsswe/1 and select play on the sessions that interest you.

01.01.2022 We're still keeping applications open for any musicians playing lower brass. Our ensemble manager Jane would be thrilled to hear from students of all ages (primary to tertiary) who play tuba, trombone, euphonium or french horn. Email us today: [email protected] Thank you to everyone else who has sent through their audition videos! Our conductors are incredibly impressed with the quality of applicants and can't wait to notify successful applicants at the end of this month. Stay tuned.
