23.01.2022 Another sad news about cancellation of 2021 Gold Coast Congress: It is with great sadness that we have to announce that after much consideration we have decided to cancel the 2021 Gold Coast Congress. Due to the Covid-19 Restrictions currently in place and likely to be in place at the Convention Centre and elsewhere in 2021, an early decision had to be made.... We will hopefully be celebrating the 60th event in 2022 - dates are 19th February to 26th February. Tim Runting Gold Coast Convenor and Kim Ellaway Manager GOLD COAST CONGRESS

16.01.2022 URGENT MESSAGE- National Congress 2020 Earlier today the Management of the Distinction Hotel Hamilton advised New Zealand Bridge that they would not be honourin...g our booking for the 2020 National Congress. The venue is to be used as a quarantine facility for returning Kiwis until at least January 2021. We will be over the next 10 days look at options to relocate the Congress. This if at all possible, may be at a different time, and is likely not be in Hamilton. At this point we ask that you hold off making any travel and accommodation bookings. Please dont make any online entries or payments. We are exceedingly disappointed with this situation and will do our absolute best to find a workable alternative for 2020.

13.01.2022 : ? : The challenge. Its a game you never master and, because it involves 4 players, theres a lot more... social interaction than there is at something like chess. But also because its a shared interest that gives you ready access to new people all over the world. When I moved from England to Sydney in 1998 for work I knew one person here. But once I got involved in bridge I had a natural introduction to lots of new people, many of whom are my best friends today. : ? : At the table it would have to be helping the NSW Open team win the 2018 Australian National Championship in Hobart. The final was 60 boards and we were behind after 58 of them. On the 59th board I made a slam on an endplay which went off at the other table. That put us in the lead and thankfully the last board was flat. The beers tasted pretty good that evening! Away from the table I have had two girlfriends in the last 10 years (no not at the same time!) and met both of them through bridge. : . ? : Above all - dont be intimidated and remember its only a game! More seriously try to have a reason behind everything you do. For example if you switch to a spade during the defence - think why are you doing so and what card(s) are you hoping partner holds? Sure the play might not work but at least you were trying for something and not just playing a card at random! Its incredibly satisfying when you do think through what you need to make or defeat a contract, play for that, and it works!

12.01.2022 The 2020 National Championships in Adelaide was cancelled. The 2021 event will still be hosted by NSW at Orange. There are a lot of attractions in Orange, the Winter Fire Festival will be held from 31 July to 2 August 2020. There will include a smaller curation of in-person events than in previous years to comply with COVID-19 restrictions, but for the first time in 2020 will simultaneously launch Australias the Very Local Streaming Service (VeryLocal), a subscription-video-on-demand platform showcasing several digital channels featuring locally produced content, including a dedicated Slow TV channel. A friendly reminder: Stay home if you're not well and don't forget social distancing when you're having a good time.
10.01.2022 The NSWBA has created a questionnaire to help our clubs to get their members involved to find the right balance between caution and sociability. Please contact of your Regional Representatives if you haven't received it, their contacts can be found on the NSWBA website: http://nswba.com.au/clubs/reps.asp?M=1

08.01.2022 Vale Toni Sharp Toni Sharp was enthusiastic to bridge, almost never missed a Monday night game and main congresses. She will live in our memories. With her family's consent, here's their farewell note: It is with the greatest love that we farewell Toni Sharp, boss mother, grand grandmother, bridge addict, avid reader and late-in-life lover of gin and whiskey. She will be missed by many, including those Federal and State politicians who benefited from her wise counsel (shouted... at the television during Sky News), the coaches of the Australian cricket team, Wallabies, Waratahs, Swans and Roosters who were grateful for the strategies she shared (again via the television) and her close and extended family (mishpocheh in Yiddish) who regularly received her insights and advice. One of her mantras was: "Do as I say, not as I do". And she certainly had plenty to say about things she hadn't done. She was strong right until the end and she leaves strong impressions with all those she touched, not least her three children and their partners, as well as her seven grandchildren (and two grand-dogs). Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 regulations, the funeral will be limited to mostly immediate family. For everyone else, we suggest you fill a glass with whiskey or gin and tonic, think of your favourite Toni memory and say: "L'chaim." Michael, Timothy and Jodie See more
02.01.2022 We are very sad to advise that the 2020 Spring Nationals has now been cancelled. We appreciate this was not an easy decision for the NSWBA and is disappointing news for our players. We would like to say to our players, hang in there, stay safe, keep healthy, continue playing online - our considerate action today is helping the country and the bridge community to survive. ... Thank you for your patience during these troublesome times. We will come back stronger and better when we can.
