20.01.2022 Following the rainfall in recent weeks Warragamba Dam is currently close to full capacity. Based on predicted rainfall Warragamba Dam is unlikely to spill. For the coming weeks WaterNSW is operating the gates manually to lower the water level to just below full supply.... This procedure is known as a drawdown and is a standard process that protects the dams flood gates by preventing them from repeatedly opening and closing automatically as a result of the dam being very close to full capacity. This can happen from slight changes in water levels or from waves in the lake. River users may notice a small increase in river heights over this period.

11.01.2022 The weather is about to cool down and there is currently a slight chance of snow (20%) for Katoomba in the early hours of Tuesday. The BoM have issued the attached graph showing forecast risk of snow at 1am Tuesday morning. This is a reminder that since the Blue Mountains experiences infrequent snow events, many locals and travelers are not prepared for snow conditions unlike our colleagues in the Alpine regions. So we have created a guide to assist people that need to travel... in snow events. The NSW SES urges that people should avoid travel in these conditions. Even if it does not snow, black ice may form on roadways in the early morning which is very hard to see. Black ice then may cause motor vehicles to slip whilst driving along. https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au//winter-safety-tips-for-reside/ If roads are affected by snow and ice in the Central Tablelands, refer to livetraffic.com for continued updates.

01.01.2022 Strong Winds and Possible Snow for Blue Mountains The NSW SES and supporting emergency service agencies are preparing for strong winds to impact the Central Tablelands from this Wednesday until the weekend. On Wednesday and Thursday, we are expecting winds may gust to 80 kph in the Blue Mountains. The significant concern is that recent rains have saturated the ground in many locations, which often softens the root systems of trees.... On Friday afternoon, there is a expectation of snow to fall across the Central Tablelands including the Blue Mountains. Depending on the amount of snow, this may affect transport infrastructure such as roads and rail throughout the day. Residents are asked to prepare their properties for high winds by securing any outdoor furniture and toys and check for dangerous branches or trees. As the weather forecasts may change quickly, the NSW SES will advise of any weather warnings in a timely manner. If you require assistance during a storm, contact the NSW SES on 132 500. For any electricity issues such as power lines down, you should contact your energy provider as soon as possible. For any life threatening emergencies, contact 000 as soon as possible.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are likely to develop over the higher parts of the Illawarra, Southern and Central Tablelands in the morning, before extending to the lower grounds of the Illawarra by late morning on Saturday. The areas of damaging winds are then likely to extend to the the higher grounds of the Hunter, Northern Tablelands and Mid North Coast later. There is an outside chance of the damaging wind gusts affecting the Lower Hunter and Newcastle Metropolitan area too. Damaging winds are expected to continue at least till the first half of Sunday. BLIZZARDS are also possible over the elevated regions of 1200 metres or above in south in association with the stronger winds and snow. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve. Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Braidwood, Katoomba and Goulburn. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
