24.01.2022 The Passing of Mr. Peter Joseph Cannon OAM Today is a very sad day for the Volunteer Fire Fighters Association of NSW with the passing of our Founder and inaugural President of ten consecutive years. Mr. Peter Joseph Cannon OAM passed away overnight at Peak Hill Hospital having been born there on June 15th 1950.... Peter as some might know, had battled a tumour of the brain for some years now and whilst initial surgery left Peter able to work again, it had seriously impacted his ability to verbally communicate. Over the past three months, the tumour had returned and took a rapid hold on Peter with his health seriously deteriorating over the past three weeks. To Peters wife Val, his sons Adam, Todd and Wade and his daughter Megan, we extend our deepest condolences. Peter gave his all as a Volunteer Firefighter, as Captain of the Waratah Brigade and later as Group Captain of the Mid Lachlan Zone. He was an incredibly strong and vocal supporter of everything Volunteers stood for and in 2002, he along with a few other long time brigade members created the Volunteer Fire Fighters Association (VFFA) so as to give a stronger voice. Friday 11th of September, 2015 was a very special day for everyone when Peter was awarded an Order of Australia at an official ceremony at Government House. Presented by His Excellency General, the Honourable David Hurley AS DSC (Ret’d) Governor of NSW, it was a very emotional day for Peter and his family as he proudly stood before Governor David Hurley to receive his Medal. Peter will be dearly missed by all who knew him, the farming community of NSW has lost one of their best, the people of NSW have lost a great man. Peter, it’s time to park the tractor and hang up the Akubra. May you now Rest Peacefully.

18.01.2022 A new logo and a new masthead for our website. We've trade marked the logo which symbolises the green of the environment with the cool fires that are synonymous with proper hazard reduction practices and of indigenous burning. The photo was taken on a HR burn north of Kurrajong Heights a couple of months ago. The low flame height and the white smoke are hallmarks of an effective burn. Hope you like it!

04.01.2022 As a volunteer firefighter, you may have experienced exposure to many stressful events while carrying out your duties. These stressful events, such as working on dangerous and unpredictable firegrounds during bushfire threats, can have an impact on the way we feel. The ways in which people experience and process their involvement in such events affect many aspects of their lives. My name is Lucy Tiley, I am a Master of Clinical Psychology Student at RMIT University interested... in surveying how you, as a volunteer firefighter, have dealt with the stressful events of the Black Summer bushfires. Volunteer firefighters perform valuable community service and this research hopes to obtain data that may help to better support this unique group. I would be very grateful for your help with this research. Please read the Participant Information Sheet. These documents provide information about the research aims, what is involved, and participation information. Everyone who responds to the survey will receive access to a Wellbeing Package designed for Volunteer Firefighters.
