25.01.2022 UPDATE: We are loving all your guesses! In our catalogue, the photo is titled "Group of men standing beside train observing land to be submerged at Burrinjuck". In the replies below Colin McDonald has given us the name of the locomotive "...and the locomotive is 'JACK', built by Krauss & Co. in München-Sendling, Germany in 1908." ... And "....three other, mostly-identical locomotives, worked the railway: DULCE, ROBIN and ARCHIE, built in 1907, also by Krauss. They were named after the railway surveyor's three children, the latter two were twin boys. JACK is believed to have been named after Barren Jack, the peak overlooking Burrinjuck Dam" We've added the tags 'burrinjuck' 'jack' 'narrow gauge' 'steam train' to the image in Collection Search http://ow.ly/nj3W50BQDq6 ====================== It's time for #captionthis Help make our photos more discoverable - what search term would you use to find this photo? There's no word limit but if you're hooked on a #oneword answer we're hoping to add the most popular as tags to our catalogue. We know #whereisthis - can you guess?

20.01.2022 From our Digital Gallery is a #TrueCrime story about ferry captain George Dean who was found guilty of "administering poison with the intent to murder" his wife in April 1895. Despite a lack of evidence Dean was sentenced to death. A public outcry against the verdict was followed by a Royal Commission which resulted in Dean being granted a free pardon in June 1895. The story, however, was not over and George Dean was subsequently tried and sentenced to 9 years for "perjury with intent to procure acquittal". He was released from prison #OnThisDay in 1904. 16.01.2022 On this day in 1916 Taronga Zoo officially opened on the shores of Sydney Harbour in Mosman. Taronga Zoo was NSW's first public zoo and initially opened in 1884 at Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park, on the site now occupied by Sydney Boys High and Sydney Girls High. The NSW Government granted 43 acres for the new bar-free zoo in Mosman. It was home to monkeys, seals, elephants and over 500 birds. https://www.records.nsw.gov.au//m/onthisday/7-october-1916

11.01.2022 The post horn is one of the commonest watermarks found across Europe in the 17th century, generally in the lighter weight papers suitable for letters. This beautiful example is enclosed within a crowned shield and the initials relate to the name of the paper mill from which it was produced. #WatermarkArt #artinthearchives#paperart #nswarchives

10.01.2022 Paper marbling patterns are produced by combining colours onto a liquid bath and then raking special combs and other tools through the paint. Paper is then laid over the design to transfer the pattern and dried. This unique process means that no two patterns are ever the same. #nswarchives #papermarbling #abstract #marblingartaustralia #marbledendpapers #marbledmonday

08.01.2022 We're flying into Summer today! This beautiful #artwork is from the album of Illuminated Addresses presented to Lord Carrington by the Municipal Association of New South Wales near the end of his tenure as Governor of NSW (1885-1890). The elegance of the detail is amazing, especially considering the short amount of time the artist had to complete the work. According to the Association "..plentifully surrounded and interspersed with ferns, waratahs, and native flowers, the col...ours being most admirably blended, and the whole reflecting the greatest credit upon the artist, Mr. Charles Turner, who, considering that he had but very short notice of the committee's requirements, has turned out a work that will, we feel certain, be prized by Lord Carrington, and will do honor to the colony wherever exhibited..." https://www.records.nsw.gov.au///galleries/the-carringtons #thecarringtons #artinthearchives #nswarchives #illuminatedmanuscripts #manuscripts #archives #1880s #art #design

07.01.2022 We all love a long weekend and next Monday is the Labour Day public holiday - a day celebrating the eight-hour work day. The eight-hour work day was a long time coming - a working day could be up to 16 hours a day and six days a week. Sydney stone masons won the first eight-hour day in the State in 1855 and celebrated with a victory dinner on 1 October. It wasn't until 1916 that it came into affect across all industries. On Monday 4 October 1915, with Australia in the midst... of war, Sydney-siders took to the streets in holiday mode. Newspapers described the day as being an "unclouded dome of blue" under which 90 trade and industry unions, about 250,000 people, marched through the streets. This moving image shows some of the crowds watching the processions in George St Sydney. In the background you can see St Andrews Cathedral, the Town Hall and huge crowds watching the eight-hour day procession passing up park street in from of the Queen Victoria building NRS 20499 http://ow.ly/Y43j50BCBZV

07.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1889 Sydney Town Hall officially opened. The Town Hall was built throughout the 1880s on the site of an old cemetery using local Sydney sandstone. 05.01.2022 #OnThisDay 13 October 1933 Australia's first traffic lights began operating in Sydney. The lights were installed at the intersection of Market and Kent Streets in Sydney's CBD. They were switched on by the then Minister for Transport, Colonel Michael Bruxner at 11am: http://ow.ly/1WsF50BMMtJ From the The Sydney Morning Herald article on Trove https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/17015287 : "Motorists took to the innovation surprisingly quickly and a number of policemen ...had little to do. The lights worked automatically, and streams of traffic halted or moved on rapidly in compliance to the red and green lights. Between each movement of traffic, the lights were amber, indicating a breathing-spell for the clearing of traffic from the intersection." Railway Square, Sydney in 1927 before traffic lights
