25.01.2022 Saturday’s Brush Lettering class was a really fun and relaxed day of creativity. After spending the morning practicing foundation steps we played in the afternoon with a variety of templates, hand lettering Xmas greetings and using the exercises to make patterns for beautiful wrapping paper. (Perfect for those committed to recycling/upcycling!) Everyone agreed that practice is so much easier when you can create something useful from it, taking home a set of practice sheets and cut-outs to use in their own time. We look forward to seeing their progress. New classes will be scheduled in 2021 - come along and find out how learning Brush Lettering opens up a whole new world of possibilities! #bookarts #calligraphy #christmasgifts #moderncalligraphy, #brushlettering #brushletteringpractice

24.01.2022 One of the challenges for beginners in brush lettering is finding the discipline to practice. The repetitive exercises that help create the thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes of good brush lettering are not always very interesting and the temptation is to skip them before you’re ready. Thus you may struggle to make progress and become disheartened. In this class we turn it around and make the exercises fun. Not only will you get some good practice but you can create beautiful gift cards, tags and Xmas tree hangers from your efforts.
23.01.2022 My Booker 2020Work In Progress Designer Bookbinders were really pleased to be able to unveil the six bindings done for this year’s Booker Prize for Fiction f...inalists last week. But these bindings don’t just make themselves so we asked the seven Fellows (seven because this year one of the bindings was done collectively by two Fellows) to document their work in progress so we could show what steps go into making a fine binding for this prestigious literary competition. This year the binders were: Kate Holland, Derek Hood, Stuart Brockman, Lori Sauer, Rachel Ward-Sale, Sue Doggett and Dominic Riley. One the next six days we will be posting up these work in progress photos, which also appear in our Winter newsletter. In the short period between shortlist announcement and the award ceremony, the binders must read, design and produce a hand bound fine binding, together with a protective container, for presentation to each of the authors. A process which might normally take three to four months or more has to be telescoped into as many weeks, but it is this which makes the commission such an interesting one for those taking part. Today we feature the binding of ‘Shuggie Bain’ by Douglas Stuart (Winner of this year’s Booker Prize) which was bound by Derek Hood and Kate Holland. This series of work in progress photos shows the many stages that went into this binding including: - Gilded book edges - The leather joints being put down - The book was covered in full biscuit-coloured goatskin - A geometric shape was cut out and peeled from the covering leather - Inlays were glued into place (including faux shagreen) - The binding was hand tooled with dots, plus the title was hand-tooled onto the spine - Gilding was also applied to the endpapers The main inspiration for the design is the housing estate Sighthill in Glasgow where we first meet Agnes and Shuggie, the pebble dash and blues and greys of the high rise buildings, and on the top floor Agnes leans out of her window gazing down on the carpet of Glasgow. On the back cover elements of black and white for Shug with the red light of his receding taxi cab. Over both loom the colliery wheels of Pithead depicted in a myriad of gold dots. Inside Elizabeth Taylor, Agnes’s heroine and touchstone, watches over a Sighthill walkway whilst a gilded beer can stain lies opposite. @douglas_stuart @picadorbooks @panmacmillan @katehollandbook #FinestFiction #shortlist #bookstagram #instabooks #amreading #igreads #author #fiction #TheBookerPrizes #DouglasStuart #ShuggieBain #KateHolland #DerekHood #2020BookerPrize #bookbinding #workofabookbinder #bindingthebooker #finebinding #designbinding #boundbythebest

11.01.2022 I haven't been a fan of learning from online bookbinding, but watching Darryn's clearly produced videos, I realise, in this world of weekend courses, they could be a great back up, revision and complement to hands on workshops. Darryn is actively involved in teaching at the Queensland Guild. He is not spruiking products! Check out DAS bookbinding . com... #bookarts #bookbinding #bookbindingcourses
