11.01.2022 It is Important for our children to be kept informed about the pandemic with simple messages .... 1. It is a virus. We need to do what we always do to prevent g...etting sick. Wash our hands, dont cough on others... ask children for other ideas to avoid spreading germs. Why not work together as a family to make up your own family handwashing song?! 2. People get better. Draw attention to the interviews and stories of people who have recovered. Google stories of recovery- people as old as 103 are recovering! 3. People across the world are working together to fix it. Focus on the helpers. Look to the stories of medical workers and Government all taking action. When events are cancelled, including school, remind children that this is done to help stop the pandemic. Let them appreciate it as one of the solutions not a problem. How we respond to these inconveniences will shape how our children feel about them. Brainstorm with your children or keep a running list of the many different ways you hear or see people helping others at this time. Look for acts of kindness in the community that you can share with your children. The singing in Italian streets is a beautiful way members of the Italian community are helping each other to not feel isolated. Consider with your children what simple acts of kindness your family might do? 4. This is temporary. Let children know this will be over before the end of the year arrives. This is not permanent. We know that the people in Hong Kong and China are starting to return to work and school over the coming weeks. This will also happen in Australia. Stories of communities starting to resume normal life are powerful reminders of this being a stage that we will pass through. And for adults... If we are able to focus on facts and role model positive responses, the 2020 pandemic has the potential to leave our children more resilient and resourceful than before it began. It is a time to practice kindness, a time when we are reminded that life is unpredictable but in the midst of chaos we can discover the beauty of humanity. Take care x
