25.01.2022 As African swine fever (ASF) continues its spread around the world, a collaboration across government and with industry this week tested our capacity to manage a response to, and recovery from, an outbreak of ASF should it ever find its way to Australia. Exercise Piggyback, initiated by the NSW State Emergency Management Committee (SEMC), involved two days of discussion-based exercises and activities that enabled us to assess the effectiveness of NSW’s arrangements for coo...rdinating response and recovery efforts between the relevant government departments and emergency management authorities. Thanks to all participating agencies who joined us in the exercise and helped put us in a better position to prepare for and minimise the impacts of ASF. 23.01.2022 People of DPI NAME Andrew Bengsen ROLE Research Scientist Hunting... WHAT IS YOUR MAIN ROLE AT DPI? I work with resource managers and other researchers to design, conduct and communicate research that gives people the information they need to effectively reduce the damage caused by introduced mammals such as wild deer and feral pigs to agricultural and natural resources. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING AT DPI? The most rewarding aspect of my work at DPI is working in teams to find creative solutions to real world problems. I love the constant challenge and variety of the work. I especially appreciate the opportunity to combine interesting fieldwork in different parts of the country with the challenge of turning a diverse range of data into valuable information that will help people better manage the impacts of overabundant animals.

14.01.2022 People of DPI NAME Jordan Bailey ROLE Leader Plant Pathology Curation... WHAT IS YOUR MAIN ROLE AT DPI? I am the curator for the Plant Pathology and Mycology Herbarium. My role is to make sure the specimens are secure, cared for and accessible and that the data we provide to stakeholders is accurate and up to date. These records are a powerful dataset and tell us what plant pathogens have been detected in NSW as well as what plants they have been found on and how they have moved around the state. The more records we have the more useful the data set is, we want representation of these pathogens through time and space, tracking their movement and changes. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR CAREER? Surprisingly, this role is quite varied. I get to work with people across different groups from DPI and other government agencies, as well as universities, students, children and community groups. I get to see a range of plant pathogens and broaden my knowledge of fungi by working with these specimens and cultures, seeing what comes into the Herbarium and what we are sending out and answering all the information requests we get. I am learning all the time about the history of plant diseases in NSW and learning about new types of fungi and diseases. HOW DO YOU AND YOUR TEAM CONTRIBUTE TO STRONGER PRIMARY INDUSTRIES IN NSW? These specimens form the official plant disease records for NSW and we use this data every day to issue area of freedom certificates which enable our growers to maintain and enhance trade inter-state and overseas. This involves maintaining the data but also updating the data. Taxonomy the identification and naming of species is a very fluid science and as we learn more about species we tend to change their names and separate and merge them and make all sorts of changes that are a headache for biosecurity officers. As curator part of my role is making sure these changes are captured in our database and also comprehend and communicate this information to our biosecurity officers and others. #nswdpi #primaryindustries #strongerprimaryindustries #dpipeople #peopleofdpi #plantpathology #mycologyherbarium
