24.01.2022 Today seems an appropriate day to remember Sir Henry Parkes, whom many have called the Father of Federation and a pivotal figure in New South Wales’ early democratic history. You may recognise his face from our five dollar note, but his contemporaries knew him as a politician, journalist, media mogul, trade unionist, suffragist and poet, among many other titles. After his emigration in 1839 from London to NSW in 1839, his growing involvement in politics over the years led him to a seat in Sydney on the first Legislative Assembly established in 1856. A divisive identity in his day as much as now, Sir Henry Parkes looms large in the history of our State and nation.
