21.01.2022 After 19 years of training, meeting, sharing, grieving, connecting, healing and growing in Emily, ECAVs training and meeting building - we said goodbye and let go. A great celebration and thanks to Leanne Tobin and Cindy Laws for a truly special ceremony and Tim Weyman for the awesome catering. ECAVs training and meeting centre is still on Cumberland but on the other side of the oval and the office remains as is for now. Thanks for everyone who attended and to all those that sent lovely messages through which we displayed on the walls

21.01.2022 Here at ECAV, we are not only guided by up to date research and practice wisdom from workers but we are also informed by robust evaluation of all our courses. Here wed like to present some of the evaluation outcomes for 2018.

20.01.2022 In a fortnights time, our Cultural Equity team will be facilitating a 3 day foundational skills workshop for bilingual community workers on domestic and family violence in migrant and refugee communities. Here is a powerful clip made by Lebanese Muslim Association that we will be using as part of that training. "A family home consists of two wings, the wife is a wing and the husband is a wing. Those wings should not be broken, if they are broken or harmed, the family cannot be whole or balanced".

18.01.2022 Talking about consent may feel like a daunting task, but Daisy discusses why understanding consent is important for all kids, and especially kids with disabilities. Video within link includes transcript. [image description: a child riding a scooter, a golden retriever dog, small child seated in a wheelchair, and a larger child in a bike are all smiling and looking at the camera]

15.01.2022 Today was the first day of Domestic and Family Violence foundational skills training for Bilingual Community Educators. Trainers Eva and Kristian were so humbled by the skills, passion and first hand experience these bilingual workers possess when working in their cultural communities. Here is a Jenga activity from today which symbolises the process of cultural change faced by recently arrived migrants and refugees in Australia.

14.01.2022 We encourage everyone to engage with the important work around the language of violence by Dr Linda Coates and Dr Allan Wade. Here is a short video filmed by the Domestic Violence Service Management Sightlines Team in 2017.

12.01.2022 We have been using Dr Linda Coates research in our ECAV trainer discussions about language this week.

12.01.2022 Our Cultural Equity and Mens DFV Interventions Team have stumbled on a quote that hits the mark when working with culturally diverse men in perpetrator programs. The core skill to work with diverse communities in domestic violence interventions surely has to be competence to understand how to help men to navigate and become more explicitly familiar with their own cultural landscape, particularly, but not only, their sense of being a man as it is influenced by the various si...gnificant aspects of that cultural landscape, and from there to help them to re-make parts of it, sufficient to retain the sense of self and who they are, but to shift on those aspects which support gender-based expectations and a sense of (male) entitlement to enforce these with force. 12.01.2022 Check out this video of Marlene and Kowana out at Glen Innis promoting Tackling Violence. If youre in the area, please drop by and visit them!

09.01.2022 Vic and Lee are delivering the Strong Aboriginal Men (SAM) program in Tabulam this week. Today was the first day with powerful yarns starting to happen with this group of men. We are also joined by our partners at Victims Services who can support victims of violence and abuse. Looking forward to more opening up over the next two days and a swim in the watering hole ASAP!

08.01.2022 Please be advised these images in this post contain photos of Vic Morgan who has just passed away. On Monday we lost our Brother Vic Morgan. No words can explain this loss. Our hearts are broken.... Thank you Vic for your love, guidance and commitment to the Strong Aboriginal Men Program. You have empowered so many men to find their voice and their strength. It has been a true honour to work beside you. Being in your calming presence, hearing your wisdoms and learning from your humility, has enabled us all to grow. Last week Vic was asked to reflect on his work here at ECAV and these are his words: For me to do my job in the workplace and the community I have to hold myself to account. What I stand for is to be a safe man, for my family and community. To do this I have to believe in what I do and who I am, a family man and a man who would like other men to be safe men too. My role in ECAV is an educator/ role model for other men..this is who I am 24/7. I am always striving to be better and love to challenge myself. Because of who I am and what I stand for I can hold others to account and challenge them to be the best they can. I want my kids and the community to have belief and faith in me as a strong Jaitmathung man. I can only do this if I continue to re-evaluate who I am and where I am heading. What I always say to the men of SAM just be the best you can be this is what I would like my colleagues to think of me as in the community and workplace. Our deepest condolences go to Vics wife, his daughters and his beautiful granddaughter. Aboriginal Communities Matter Advisory Group - ACMAG Tackling Violence

05.01.2022 A really great series of short 3 minute multilingual videos about domestic and family violence have been developed in Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Korean and Tamil. Please share this valuable resource with your CALD networks! The videos cover: ... 1. Understanding domestic and family violence 2. Supporting someone experiencing domestic and family violence 3. Understanding how children are affected by Domestic and Family Violence 4. Safety, reporting, the court system and Domestic and Family Violence 5. Support services/apps to assist with dealing with Domestic and Family Violence The Multicultural Centre for Women's Health have all these videos on their website: https://www.mcwh.com.au/domestic-and-family-violence-educ/

05.01.2022 Magic happens when you get 15 bilingual educators and case workers in a room to discuss Domestic and Family Violence. Incredible work being done in and for their cultural communities with specialist skills and knowledge. And such a powerful take home message from our guest speakers who work at Jannawi Family Services, Wiley Park. When supporting clients who explain violence as "part of their culture", the workers centre the conversation on "the culture of violence" in the family rather than framing the behaviours as "cultural".

04.01.2022 We love working with Bilingual Educators here at ECAV. They are such an important connector for migrant and refugee victims of violence.

03.01.2022 "Listening to the Ringing Bells" - Trauma Counsellor Maggie Escartin speaking about Vicarious Trauma as a Tranformative Experience at the 2018 ECAV Bilingual Educator and Interpreter Practice Forum

03.01.2022 We think that this is a great video. A father and son speaking about how the language we use feeds into sexist ideas and limits gender expression.

03.01.2022 A charming vision with a chilling message. A small picket-fenced house is the focus for a conversation about the number of women killed in Australia each ...year, in violent crimes. Made from scrapbooking paper the houses tell the story of life and death. "The thing about paper is its very fragile, I could just hit that with one fist and thats destroyed." Paulette Hayes based her artwork on the research of Destroy the Joint Counting Dead Women project.

02.01.2022 Have you seen this incredible short video addressing domestic violence in immigrant communities?

01.01.2022 Our ECAV Cultural Equity team have delivered their first nationally accredited Course in Bilingual Community Education Work. Facilitated by Statewide Educators Eva Adamkiewicz and Kristian Reyes, this six day, nationally recognised course builds on the group work skills and knowledge of Bilingual Community Educators (BCEs). The first cohort of twelve BCEs in the course come with extensive experience delivering health information and community capacity building workshops in... their first language with culturally diverse communities across Sydney. From diabetes awareness and breast screening programs to domestic and family violence education sessions, BCEs are often the first contact many migrants and refugees have with the health system. BCEs play a vital role in connecting migrant and refugee communities with the supports and services available to them. This course acknowledges their crucial place in the community and provides them with an opportunity to formalise their skills with three nationally recognised units of competency. A partnership between ECAV, Refugee Health, SWSLHD, WSLHD and the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) forms the NSW Health BCE Workforce Standards Committee. They oversee the development of this training. This course is scheduled to be delivered numerous times in 2020 and aims to strengthen the workforce of existing and emerging BCEs doing incredible work across the Sydney region. Bilingual Community Educators can enrol in the 2020 course through the ECAV website at www.ecav.health.nsw.gov.au

01.01.2022 "As the stories have spiraled on, though, Ive learned that simply asking, Am I being a nice guy? isnt enough. The questions I need to be asking are: Am I also actively unpacking my unconscious biases, as well as those of my male peers? If my guy friend refers to a woman as a bitch, will I call him out? If a guy cringes at the mention of a womans period, will I say something to help destigmatize the topic? If a woman comes forward with a story about surviving assault, will I, without a doubt, believe her? What about all the times Ive heard someone say, Women, amirite?! Will I remind him thats a sexist comment we need to put to bed? As I became more aware of the questions I should be asking myself, I realize this is at times, a confusing but much-needed learning experience".

01.01.2022 Amazing work being done by this Melbourne dentist for survivors of sexual violence. "While most people can find a visit to the dentist unpleasant, for many survivors of sexual assault the circumstances around a dentists chair can be extremely triggering and traumatic. For this reason, many survivors forgo proper dental care, leading to a range of other health and self-esteem issues.... For example, the horizontal chair position, theyre sort of back in the same physical position as the trauma, lying under an authority figure, and thats a really strong trigger for memory. And the fear of not being able to breathe, or gagging, or vomiting during treatment, and the fear of having an embarrassing panic attack or being drugged, if they were drugged before the assault".

01.01.2022 Dear Colleagues and Friends of ECAV, We wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and New Year! Thank you for your work and commitment to addressing Domestic & Family Violence in our communities. I hope you enjoy our annual song, this year we had a solar system theme (to explain the backdrop!)... Look forward to connecting with everyone in 2019! https://vimeo.com/306605878 Kind Regards, Jo Campbell Director

01.01.2022 Its crucial that we have a full understanding of how violence may operate in families and in homes, including when adolescents use violence. Our Young People and Violence course being delivered next month in Port Kembla will be looking into this with youth workers. "It is incredibly important that we break down stigma, that we open the door, so we talk more about adolescent family violence so that families experiencing this know that they are not alone. And most importantly ... that we make sure that there is supports for them, that there is effective responses, that if they reach out they do get help."
