25.01.2022 A well-prepared home is more likely to survive a bush fire. We have spotted at least 5 actions this property owner could take:... 1. Clean the gutters of leaves and twigs 2. Keep lawns short and gardens well maintained 3. Clean up fallen leaves, twigs and debris around the property 4. Enclose the areas under the house 5. Cut back trees and shrubs overhanging buildings What else can you spot that could prepare this property if a bush fire was to start? #nswrfs

20.01.2022 There are some simple things you can do around your rural property to prepare for a fire: 1. Clear/slash flammable materials around structures like homes or sheds. 2. If the conditions are right and you have the permits, approvals and skill, conduct a controlled burn.... 3. Plough firebreaks around paddock boundaries to prevent the spread of fire. 4. Rotate stock across your property to ensure paddocks are well-grazed. 5. Prepare and maintain sturdy hoses and water pumps in case you need to defend your property. #nswrfs

18.01.2022 The first appliances we would like to show you is our pumper . Call sign Mudgee pumper, Mudgee pumper is a category 11 pumper. It was built in 2009 and has be...en with the Mudgee brigade since 2009. It was the first pumper in the Cudgegong District and in the region west area. The pumper is mainly used for urban calls, such as car accidents, structure fires, and search and rescue. It can also be used for bushfires as it has 4x4 capabilities which most pumpers don't have. Our pumper also has the capacity to pump and roll, which means it can can pump water while the truck is moving, which most pumpers can't do. In 2017 during the sir Ivan Kains flat fire, Mudgee pumper was the main reason the village of wollar was saved as at one stage it was the only truck in the village. Also in 2017, the pumper was the first pumper in the NSW RFS to put signage on the locker door, which was done to support Pink Up Mudgee. In 2019 the signage that is on the pumper now was put on to support Pink Up Mudgee again, as well as to promote bushfire safety. It has a tank capacity of 3300 litres and a pump capacity of 2300 litres per minute. If you want to know anything more about our pumper, send us a message or comment on this post. photos by Photography by Ashlee See more

17.01.2022 Early this morning, volunteer members of NSW RFS - Gulgong Brigade, NSW RFS - Mudgee Headquarters Brigade and NSW RFS - Cooks Gap Brigade, along with members of... Fire and Rescue NSW Station 312 Gulgong, responded to a structure fire in Cooks Gap. Unfortunately, the caravan and annexe were lost, but there were no persons injured and the fire was contained to the area. Even though the circumstances are not ideal, it’s great to have the different Brigades and Services working well together.

15.01.2022 The fourth appliance we would like to show you is our Category 9 ultra light tanker, which has a call sign of Mudgee 9. Mudgee 9 was built in 2019 and came int...o service in mid-December 2019, which was during the height of the black summer fires. Just like Mudgee 1, our Cat 9 was heavily used in the black summer fires in the local area. Mudgee 9 is used for getting to places where our heavier appliances can't get to when fighting fires, and it's also for fire protection for heavy plant-like dozers and graders. This is the last of our appliances to show you, and we hope you liked learning a bit more about what we use to keep the community safe. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact our page and one of our team will help you out. Photos byPhotography by Ashlee

14.01.2022 Fact: Grass fires can move three times as fast as a bush fire, they start easily and spread quickly. Grass fires will pose a risk in NSW this fire season so make sure you have a cleared area around your home. Learn the 5 simple actions to prepare your property at www.myfireplan.com.au... #nswrfs

14.01.2022 You don’t have to live right near the bush to be at risk. Even if your home is in town you are still at risk. During a fire many properties not in the direct line of the fire are destroyed due to ember attack and spot fires. Embers can travel great distances in hot, dry and windy conditions igniting combustible materials around your home.... To know more about the risk to you visit: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare/know-your-risk #nswrfs

13.01.2022 The second appliance we want to show you is our Category 6 Heavy Tanker, which has a call sign of Mudgee 6 The Cat 6 was build in 2015 and came into service in ...2016 with the Mudgee brigade. It can be used as firefighting unit or can carry water to other units to keep them in the field. It has a front-mounted monitor that can be operated in the cab of the appliance or has a side monitor that is operated by a crew member in the back of the appliance. This appliance is a very valuable appliance, as it carries 9000 liters of water and can be used to directly attack a fire or supply water to other smaller appliances on the fire ground. It has a pumping capacity of 1000L per minute. It does have 4x4 capability but due to it's size, can't always go where the other trucks go. Due to the lack of water supplies available in some rural areas, the Cat 6 is mostly used to supply water to other appliances on the fireground. Due to the large water capacity, the Cat 6 is also used at structure fires as well to eliminate the need for several appliances needing to leave the scene to collect water. The Cat 6 is a much loved vehicle by multiple members within the brigade, and is certainly a great asset to the district. Photos by Photography by Ashlee and SDC Misdon See more

12.01.2022 Bush Fire Danger Period set to Commence this Week. From Thursday 1 October, the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period for the Mid-Western Regional Council area will... commence for the 2020/21 season. During the Bush Fire Danger Period, landholders wishing to light a fire in the open will require a free fire permit from the NSW Rural Fire Service prior to lighting any fire. Fire permits help ensure that fire is used safely by setting out how a fire is lit and maintained, and lets firefighters know when you are conducting burning activities on your property during the time of year when the risk of fire is heightened. Once a fire permit is obtained, landholders also need to provide at least 24 hours’ notice to all adjoining neighbours and the NSW Rural Fire Service. Locally, this can be provided: Online www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify Phone 02 6372 4434 (business hours only) Email [email protected] Social Media facebook.com/NSWRFSCudgegong SMS 0408 116 465 Bush Fire Danger Period typically finishes on 31 March, however can be extended depending upon local conditions. 12.01.2022 Fact: Lots of rain means lots of fuel for bush and grass fires. Despite the Mid-Western Regional Council area receiving over 500mm of rain in 2020 this does not mean the chance of a bush fire is reduced. The rain has encourage fuel growth and as the temperatures begin to climb the fuel will dry and the chance of a bush or grass fire spreading quickly increases.... 08.01.2022 Cudgegong volunteers celebrate $1.13M tankers and long serving members. NSW RFS - Cudgegong District last night celebrated the official handover of seven new fi...re trucks that will assist volunteers at local brigades to provide an even greater level of fire protection to the local community, as well as recognising long serving members. NSW RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers joined State member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders MP, Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Dez Kennedy and other guests at the Main Pavilion of the AREC Australian Rural Education Centre in Bombira to officially hand over the keys of the new tankers. Mr Saunders said the new tankers, together worth $1.133 million, will enable Cooyal, NSW RFS - Lawson Brigade, NSW RFS - Mudgee Headquarters Brigade, NSW RFS - Gulgong Brigade, Windeyer and NSW RFS - Cooks Gap Brigade to strengthen their firefighting efforts across their communities. Cooks Gap Brigade received a new $207,000 Category 7 tanker to replace one which was destroyed by a fallen tree during the 2019/20 fires. While the remaining brigades’ previous tankers have served them well, I am confident these new state-of-the-art vehicles will prove to be invaluable assets to the area, Mr Saunders said. The NSW Government’s ongoing investment in new vehicles ensures NSW RFS members have access to modern firefighting technology when responding to fires and other incidents. The event also provided an opportunity to recognise 42 members of the Cudgegong District who had together amassed 851 years of service to the NSW RFS. Today we awarded long service medals and/or clasps to dedicated volunteers who had given between 10 and 59 years’ of service to the community, as well as three national medals to individuals who have gone above and beyond in their roles, Commissioner Rogers said. I particularly wish to congratulate Gulgong Brigade's Corey Andrews (21 years’ service), Andrew Sutherland (24 years’ service ) and Peter Rae (29 years’ service) on receipt of their national medals and John Whale for his 59 years' service. All our volunteers remain on-hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we should be extremely proud and grateful for their contribution. In particular, considering the magnitude of the 2019/20 bush fires and the recent floods, I would like to congratulate everybody on their ongoing hard work and professionalism. We also thank the family, friends, employers and colleagues of all NSW RFS volunteers. We know it takes their ongoing support and patience to assist and enable our volunteers to do what they do to save lives and property. #nswrfs Mudgee Guardian Real FM Mudgee 2MG Mudgee Magic 87.6 Mudgee & Gulgong ABC Central West ABC Western Plains WIN News Central West PRIME7 News Central West Photo Credit: Nick Pearce Media

06.01.2022 Challenging Day Ahead for Firefighters. #volunteer #firefighters - supported by water-bombing aircraft and earth-moving machinery - continue to work in trying c...onditions to reduce the spread of the Newells Rd Pyangle Fire ahead of deteriorating conditions on Australia Day (Tuesday 26 January). Based on the forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology, the Fire Danger Rating (FDR) will be VERY HIGH for the Central Ranges (Temp 36 RH 24 Wind NW 20-30kph). Fire burning under these conditions can be difficult to control, with embers blown ahead of the main for up to 2km. It also means all Fire Permits will be suspended from midnight tonight. As always, if you see a fire without a fire truck in attednance, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. #nswrfs Magic 87.6 Mudgee & Gulgong Real FM Mudgee 2MG Mudgee Mudgee Guardian ABC Central West ABC Western Plains

05.01.2022 Despite last Summer's devastating fire season only 6.9% of NSW was impacted by bush fire. The risk of a significant bush fire this summer is still very high, most of the Cudgegong District was left untouched by fire in 2019/2020 It only takes 5 minutes to improve or make a plan that will give your property, your family and yourself the best chance of survival....
