15.01.2022 On this day 32 years ago, Allan Rendell a 31yo volunteer firefighter of Illawong Brigade tragically lost his life fighting a bush fire in the Royal National Park. It was Sunday 16th October 1988, crews were working along Lady Carrington Drive consolidating a containment along the western edge of the fire. October 1988 was both warm and dry. 7 days were recorded with a temperature of over 30c and remarkably no rain fell during the month.... It was around 8pm when a large tree near the fires edge fell on the cabin of the fire tanker where Allan was located. Despite the valiant efforts of his colleagues, Allan was lost. Today marks the anniversary of a local volunteer who made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting their community.
