07.01.2022 SES VOLUNTEERS HONOUR BOURKE LEGEND In 1962, Gundabooka man Percy Hobson was the first Indigenous athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth games. At on...ly 20 years old, and against all odds, this local high jumper broke the record when he leapt over a 6’11 high bar, in Perth’s Perry Lakes stadium. A feat which forever establishing Percy as one of Australia’s most iconic sportsmen. To pay tribute, his hometown of Bourke, NSW has celebrated Percy’s achievement by dedicating the Bourke Water Tower as a canvas for a large mural of Percy; a recreation of the iconic photo of Hobson bounding into the air; the moment he earned his first gold medal. Last week, NSW SES volunteers in Bourke joined community members to finish the mural with hand-prints at the base of the mural. Our volunteers came from NSW SES Bungendore, NSW SES - Cessnock City Unit, NSW SES Dungog Unit, NSW SES - Gosford Unit, NSW SES - Hunters Hill Unit, NSW SES Maitland Unit, NSW SES - Port Stephens Unit and NSW SES Sutherland Shire to assist the local community and the local unit during the current flooding event. 05.01.2022 Residents in the greater Newcastle area were in the path of a major storm front yesterday evening with the cleanup continuing today. The New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES) responded to 507 calls for help since last night with 343 in Newcastle, other call came from 29 Cessnock, 64 Lake Macquarie area, 31 Maitland, and 26 Port Stephens area. We have only been able to complete about 200 of these so far The storm made its impact known cutting through Sandgate, Shor...tland, Maryland and Fletcher blowing down trees, power lines and damaging rooves as it passed over Newcastle. Northern Zone Commander Chief Superintendent Stephen Patterson said that the storm had hit hard but the volunteers rallied. We have 200 SES, RFS and NSWFB out on the community helping since this morning. We have reports of streets of trees down with damage to houses, rooves missing tiles and major damage. Access to some streets has been difficult with trees across roads and power lines down slowing our progress. The State Emergency Service thanks those employers who have allowed their staff to assist the community today rather than attend their workplace. Without those employers it would be very difficult for the NSW SES to support all the people who call for help. Residents should monitor the SES website, your local ABC radio station at 1233 AM or 94.5FM and the BOM website for updates on weather that might affect your area. Residents should also prepare their homes by trimming overhanging branches, cleaning gutters and storing away anything that is likely to blow away, such as furniture and trampolines. If you require the assistance of the SES call 132 500, but if the situation is life threatening call 000, he concluded. Issued by Northern Zone Commander Chief Superintendent Stephen Patterson
