25.01.2022 They said we would get a storm with heavy rain last weekend and boy, did we get soaked. Over the course of the week all the way to Wednesday the Manly unit had 26 jobs within our area of operations. Seven were flood related, the rest were storm damage. We were up on roofs to temporarily prevent water from coming in, we redirected overflowing sewer water and our pumps and chainsaws were permanently in use. Those volunteers who were not out for flood and storm jobs were filling...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Last year, things were different for WOW day and Fred had a chance to interview friendly locals to share their personal #ThankYouSES. We may not mingle in the streets like we did in previous years on Wow day, but rest assured of one thing: We are still here for you when you need us!

19.01.2022 We can't really complain about lack of opportunity to put our training into practise this season, can we? Last night’s storm came fast, didn’t stay long and lstill eft us with lots of damage. Crews were out till late (only finished around 3 am) and have already started cleaning up again with a fresh team this morning. This photo was taken at Seaforth by Nathalie when they first arrived on the scene with a tree down into powerlines.
19.01.2022 Busy days for our volunteers as you may imagine. Lots of heavy rainfall as predicted. Here is one example from a home on Wakehurst Parkway that our team of four with Rebecca, Bernard, Nic and Natalie were dispatched to earlier today. The local residents had already taken matters into their own hands by setting up buckets and draining them via a hose out the window. Our goal is to make a house safe enough, that residents can stay in their home and to minimise the risk of further damage to the structure. Repairs will need to be done, but for now, our team made sure that the leaking is temporarily fixed. Off to the next job!
18.01.2022 We would like to say thank you to all visitors to our Open Night. Special thanks to Fairlight Manly Scouts. We had lots of fun hosting you and enjoyed the little break in-between the February flood and storm related call-outs.
18.01.2022 FALLEN POWER LINES - Your Safety: With strong winds hammering down on Sydney, always assume fallen powerlines are live. Be aware, stay at least 8 METRES away and call AUSGRID immediately on 13 13 88. If trapped in a car that has fallen power lines in contact with it, remain in the car, dial Triple Zero (000) and wait for FIRE AND RESCUE NSW and/or the energy authority to arrive.

15.01.2022 Too many powerlines still above the ground in Sydney, making it difficult for SES to engage. Very often our volunteers have to wait patiently for Ausgrid to turn off power before they may start removing damaged trees from properties or off the road.
15.01.2022 Last but not least, we would like to share the story of Ben Tory with you. Ben is a Manly SES legacy. He has for many years served as a unit training officer and with his work for St John has always been our go-to person when it comes to doing the right thing in First Aid. It was last week that Ben has been awarded Northern Beaches Citizen of the Year by Mayor Michael Regan. Well deserved, Ben! https://www.northernbeaches.nsw.gov.au//local-australia-da
14.01.2022 We are the State Emergency Service, Manly Unit. Our volunteers are well trained to handle emergency situations. For every emergency engagement, the safety of our volunteers is paramount. This has not and never will change.... With the current global COVID-19 pandemic crisis, our goal of being available to help our local community during floods storms and tsunamis is unchanged. We have taken essential steps to reduce the risk of infection for our members and their loved ones by putting our in-person weekly meetings for training and maintenance on hold. Starting this week, we have shifted to online briefings and we are considering options for delivering more training content online. All this is done to reduce person-to-person contact and to slow down the rate of new infections. This is also known as #FlattenTheCurve. As with all other emergency agencies, the SES has not stopped responding to calls and will continue to be operational. When you call our 132 500 helpline, we will still put together a team of capable volunteers to come to your house and make it safe again during floods and storms. Please be mindful and do not call us if you think your situation can be handled by yourself or if it can wait. Under our current guidance, our teams will ask you if a person with a confirmed or suspected virus infection is in the house so that we can prepare accordingly. We have done a lot on our end to prepare for the pandemic crisis and will continue to monitor developments to be able to respond adequately. We now have a small ask for you which is as simple as please #StayHomeToStaySafe ! Your Manly SES
13.01.2022 Come and meet our friendly volunteers at Manly Ocean Care Day this Sunday. Learn about what the SES does for the community during Floods, Storms or in case of a Tsunami. As always, there will be opportunities to talk about becoming a volunteer as well as a chance for kids to take a seat in our truck and maybe even turn on the lights and sirens.
13.01.2022 For some of us, the day hasnt finished yet...
11.01.2022 Busy days for our local volunteers. Not only have we been up north to support NSW RFS and Fire & Rescue teams in their efforts of fighting the fires (SES crews are supporting with incident management and logistics), but we also had some battles on home grounds this week, trying to help residents making their homes safe again after recent storms. Here is just a small selection of what was going on this week, including some unscheduled animal rescue. We hope to see you all on Ocean Care Day this Sunday, but may have to cancel our appearance if the winds are picking up again or if we are still busy cleaning up. Be #StormSafe!
11.01.2022 As many years before, your local SES was participating in the annual #ManlyOceanCareDay. This year we had some focus on Tsunami and how to read the warnings.

06.01.2022 We would like to share these important RFS Bush Fire Safety messages. Have a safe end of the year!
05.01.2022 CALM is our second nature at SES. Mitigating risk is one of the first essential skills our volunteers learn during their training. It is paramount for us to ensure everyones safety and give confidence to our local communities in times of crisis. The current situation is unusual in many ways, but in terms of how we approach it, not very different. We are prepared to prepare for the unexpected and adapt. Yesterday was the fourth week in a row that we have delivered our weekly... briefing in an online format as opposed to face to face to minimise the risk of spreading infections amongst our members. Our local training team is working to deliver courses in non-conventional ways that maintain rigour and reduce in-person contact. This is an interesting challenge when a lot of gear is needed for these sessions: vehicles, ropes, chain saws, you name it. The safety principles we have practiced for years will help us take the safest approach when we are out on jobs. For example, the Hierarchy of Controls starts with protecting people from a hazard. In this case, we are protecting SES members from contracting or spreading the virus with additional Personal Protective Equipment. Additionally, we are changing our processes to reduce in-person contact. The ultimate control however is to eliminate the hazard. This is where you can help us by minimising the need for engagement and in that way eliminating the hazard of spreading infections. We want you to Stay Home To Stay Safe and we are fully committed to CARRY ON protecting your homes after nature struck. Please be a little like your SES: Stay calm and mindful and only call for us when you need our help urgently and if the situation cannot be attended to after the pandemic crisis instead. Thank you for staying calm! See more
05.01.2022 Today is International Youth Day. The NSW SES appreciate the energy and expertise of over 2500 youth members aged 16-30 who generously volunteer to share their time, skills and expertise for the benefit of the service and wider community. To celebrate International Youth Day, were sharing a story of one of our own Manly Unit Youth Volunteers: 20 year old Fred Pollock. Fred was nominated earlier this month as the NSW SES finalist at the Rotary Emergency Service Community Awa...rds (RESCA) for the 2019 Dorothy Hennessy Emergency Services Youth Scholarship. Every year RESCA recognise outstanding emergency service personnel who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Fred has impressed us since he first joined our unit with his dedication and ongoing commitment. There has also not been a single community engagement event that Fred has missed since he joined. He is one of our best SES ambassadors out there, always happy to share his experience as a volunteer with the public. At Manly Unit were proud to celebrate that another of our Youth Volunteers has received this recognition. Last year, Tessa Wicks was already a finalist for the award. We asked Fred what would be his top tip for young people who maybe thinking of joining the SES Just do it! Ive learnt amazing skills, worked through the night in big storms, enjoyed helping my local community in times of need. Ive made new friends, had some awesome mentors and trainers and built my confidence. My local Manly unit feel like my second family. Thanks to all our Youth Volunteers for your dedication and invaluable contribution to the work of the NSW SES. Your community is extremely grateful. #UN4Youth #YouthDay #RESCA
04.01.2022 Fred and his mom were volunteering last Saturday as part of the Manly Library Human Book project. Of course SES was part of their story.
