20.01.2022 What is happening? A final flood watch has been released for the Richmond Wilsons rivers. Renewed flooding is no longer expected. https://bit.ly/39a4r52 Our members responded to a total of 31 jobs across the region in the past two days, these were mainly sandbagging, and tree related. Our Volunteers are taking the opportunity of slightly more favorable conditions to restock and replenish resources before downing tools for some well-earned rest. But they remain poised to ass...ist their community whenever they are needed. What we are expecting? A consistent pattern of rainfall is expected in the coming weeks. With catchment areas already saturated, there is a higher risk of future rainfall to cause flash or riverine flooding. What can we all do? Just as our volunteers are preparing their Units and vehicles by drying out equipment, restocking and doing any necessary maintenance, now is a good time to do the same around your home. Double check drains and gutters to ensure they are clear. Tidy up and secure loose objects around your property. Resupply if you are in an area that may become isolated. 16.01.2022 Caravans, camping and flooding If you are camping or staying in a caravan park close to a river, beach or in a low-lying area these holidays you may be at risk of flooding. Caravan park residents can prepare for future severe weather events now by making sure relocatable vans are in a towable condition, tyres are inflated, and jacks wound up. ... Staying inside a caravan during a flood is very dangerous. When flooding is possible non-moveable vans and campers should make sure equipment is tied down and secured including gas tanks, with personal and electrical items raised as high as possible. Monitor Bureau of Meteorology website for severe weather and flood warnings http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/ For emergency flood and storm assistance call NSW SES on 132 500. 08.01.2022 More rain possible for the North Coast late next week The NSW SES is encouraging residents to take advantage of improved weather conditions to prepare for the possibility of more heavy rain and storms late next week. This week NSW SES volunteers responded to 371 requests for emergency storm and flood assistance across the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter and Central Coast areas as more rain fell on already wet catchments.... The rain resulted in several flood isolations across the Mid North Coast and was responsible for a landslip cutting off the Macleay community of Bellbrook, with NSW SES currently working with Kempsey Shire Council in the resupply of essential items to the town. NSW SES Incident Controller Allan Budziarski acknowledged the contribution of NSW SES volunteers, North Coast residents and holidaymakers in dealing with the recent storms and flooding. Superintendent Budziarski said, Although we would prefer to see no flood rescues occur to have only 6 last week across the North Coast given the number road closures is a credit to affected communities who have assisted emergency services by not driving, riding or walking through flood water. Bureau of Meteorology data for the NSW North Coast shows that some locations have received over 600mm of rain during the last 4 weeks causing the saturation of coastal catchments resulting in these areas little capacity to deal with further rainfall. Consequently, the Bureau and NSW SES are closely monitoring the possibility of a coastal trough developing late next week bringing with it the potential for further heavy rainfall, flash flooding and riverine flooding. The NSW SES is recommending residents use the break in the weather to clean gutters, trim tree branches and secure down items around yards and balconies. The SES also advises that now is a good time for residents that can be isolated by creek and river rises to stock up on essential supplies and for residents to be aware that tree root systems will be weakened and susceptible to strong winds because of saturated soils. 08.01.2022 Safety advice for all recreational river users: We understand it’s the holiday season and people love to spend time in and around our beautiful creeks and rivers. Unfortunately, with all the recent rainfall over North East NSW many of our local Northern Rivers recreational water spots are flooding or have been affected by flooding. We are still experiencing some small river inflows which is caused by remaining run off, this is constantly changing the water behaviour ...and velocity. The water levels on many of our river systems are still expected to fluctuate over coming days with any renewed rainfall. Due to last seasons bushfires we are seeing higher than normal amounts of debrief in the river systems making them particularly dangerous for swimmers and recreational water sports such as boating and kayaking. No one should be engaging in these water actives while the river is still flooding. Rivers are likely to rise again with any additional rain so holiday makers should remain aware of the possibility of more flooding and monitor the conditions. NSW Maritime
