04.01.2022 In the next Chapter of Meet the Members of the Shellharbour City Unit of the NSW State Emergency Service, we meet Husband and Wife Team, Michael & Michelle 1. How long have you each been with the orgainsation? We both joined the orgainsation together 2 years and 3 months ago.... 2. What made you join the NSW SES together? We both wanted to get out there and help the community in any way we could and we both agreed that the SES is a great way for us to do this. We have always been incredibly supportive and encouraging of each other. As a couple we have different strengths and weaknesses which complement each other which in turn makes us a better team. 3. What section do you each belong to? Field capability and the SORT team. 4. What was the first Call-Out you each went on and do you go out on Callouts together? The first time for Michelle was an extremely busy day with several Request for Assistance. I remember having to do a huge tree job at Macquarie Pass and I was lucky enough to experience lights and sirens on the way there. Michael’s first call out was on a very rainy day where he attended a few call outs that required sand bagging and minor roof repairs. Yes, we both go on jobs together occasionally and we have found that we work very well with each other. 5. What's the best thing about the NSW SES? The best thing for the both of us is learning new skills and experiencing new challenges as no job is the same. We also love all the new friends we have made since being at the SES. The people at the Shellharbour City Unit and other units we have had the pleasure to meet are awesome to work with and we are all there as a team to help each other along. 6. What's your favourite piece of equipment that you have each used? Michael - The two boats- the bow loader and V Hull Michelle- Chainsaw 7. What's the one piece of advice you would give someone who is thinking of joining? Don’t hesitate just do it! We both hesitated for a long time and wish we didn’t. Instead of watching the news and wishing we were out there helping we are now out there with qualifications we never thought we would achieve and have gone from strength to strength. Joining the SES has been great for the both of us and we believe it would be great for you too. Thanks Michael and Michelle for sharing your story about your journey in the NSW SES.
