23.01.2022 We are still busy this week managing multiple RFA's (requests for assitance) from the weather event over the weekend. Wet ground and strong winds can make trees unstable, as is the case for this gum tree on The Kingsway we had to fell yesterday. Please report any dangerous trees and branches to us, on 132500, so that we can continue to keep The Shire safe.

10.01.2022 We are so proud of one of YOUR local heroes! A professional life spent saving lives in the Public Health sector and now more than 10 years saving lives and protecting the community in orange!

09.01.2022 We are hearing reports of residents struggling to contact us via phone - understandably the 132 500 number is still experiencing a high volume of calls so we ask that should you need assistance, please be patient and keep trying. In the event of a life threatening situation call 000.

09.01.2022 *** SAFETY NOTICE *** We have been absolutely hammered by this crazy weather today resulting in trees giving up and taking a dive, many taking out powerlines on their way down. If you see fallen powerlines always assume they are live and stay at least 8 metres away. Some roads have also been blocked by fallen trees, other roads have been affected by flooding. Stay safe Sutherland Shire - never drive, ride, walk or play in floodwater! And if you do need to be out on the roads today, slow down and drive to conditions.

08.01.2022 Volunteers from Sutherland Shire SES units were paged just after 1am to assist our colleagues from Ausgrid clear a tree currently blocking one lane of The Boulevarde and the driveway to Fire and Rescue NSW Station 045 Miranda .

08.01.2022 Ever wondered why were are so adamant for people not to drive through floodwater? This is a 10m long trunk of a tree that was witnessed to float across Audley Weir when it was flooded 2 weeks ago. Hazards like these can be unseen right up until they have impacted your car and washed you off the road. In the of Feb, the NSW SES responded to over 350 Flood / Swift Water Rescues, the majority of which were people who has driven their cars into floodwater.

08.01.2022 **Updated** THEY MADE IT OUT! We have just received footage proving that the vehicle managed to reverse out. ... This driver was incredibly lucky, if the vehicle did go any further it would have been pushed off the road by the force of the water and the occupants would have likely not survived. The NSW SES has completed over 250 Flood / Swift Water Rescues due to the rainfall over the weekend, the vast majority for people like this who drove into floodwater. Original post; Okay, so we need your help please! On Sunday afternoon a 4WD was spotted entering a flooded Audley Weir. We have exhausted every avenue to make sure the person in this photo is ok! We have no intention of trying to get whoever this is in trouble, we just want to know that they are ok and got out alive! If this is you, or you know who this is please get in touch to let us know. The water was 2m deep at the centre of the weir per the flood gauge when this, and other images where taken. For everyone else, PLEASE DON’T DRIVE THROUGH FLOODWATER.

05.01.2022 As if we weren’t already soaked enough, we are in for more of a drenching this morning! Combine that with expected high tides and we could see some flooding around the Shire today. If you are heading outdoors please DO NOT enter flood water! We’ve already had a number of roads closed including Audley Weir and Corea Street Miranda with access to Sandy Point currently blocked by a fallen tree (crews are on the way to clear). ... If you must be out today, make sure you check live traffic for road closures before you leave: https://www.livetraffic.com. We currently have five teams out in the field keeping an eye on flooding hotspots and attending to requests for assistance but we can’t be everywhere at once - if you notice a problem or need help call 132 500 or 000 for life threatening situations.

05.01.2022 Well that’s 1000! It’s been a HUGE 34 days to start 2020. We just ticked over 1000 requests for assistance in the Sutherland Shire alone with volunteers in the field every day of this year! We’ve put hundreds of volunteers into the field not just in Sutherland, but all over the state in support of the #nswfires and across Sydney in support of other units as well during storm impacts. ... All of this, as well as conducting training for Flood Rescue, Storm and Chainsaw operations as well as general Rescue work. Huge thank you to the 200+ NSW SES volunteers of the Sutherland Shire!

04.01.2022 Bit wet out there today folks! We've responded to 24 jobs and counting so far today with 5 teams in the field. The next 2-3 days will see significant rainfall across not just the Shire but the whole Sydney Metro area. Enough that the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Flood Watch for The Georges and Woronora River for Minor to Moderate Flooding. For our Woronora residents, this means a POTENTIAL equivalent tide height of 4.3m. This is unlikely however has been predicted as possible so dust off those Flood Safety Plans.

04.01.2022 Well what a storm.... Ever wanted to feel what it’s like to be in a cyclone? Well that storm was equivalent to a Category 1 cyclone! That was truely an epic few day for our volunteers. What to know the facts? - 453 jobs received for our unit alone... - 11 Flood / Swift Water rescues - Wind speeds of 120km/h - Rainfall of 250mm - 470 000+ volunteer hours commuted - Georges River to our north went to Moderate Flood significantly impacting Sandy Pt. - Thankfully the Woronora River remained below Minor Flood level. In addition to the above, the unit also committed Flood / Swift Water rescue teams across Sydney Metro where they supported the rescue efforts of hundreds of people. A general note of thank you to everyone who waited on the phone to us. Both 132 500 and 000 were inundated with calls to a point where 000 received more than double the calls on Sunday than on the worst fire day of the summer. Huge thank you to the local NSW RFS units who assisted us.

04.01.2022 Some stats for the day: Lucas Heights has received over 200mm of rain since midnight Sutherland Shire SES received over 230 requests for assistance Of those requests 6 were flood rescue jobs... This takes us to over 1300 requests this year so far! The take home - it’s been an incredibly crazy day out there and we appreciate the patience and responsibility our shire residents have displayed today, but we do urge everyone to stay out of floodwater! We are working our way through jobs as quickly as possible and will have teams out in the field into the night and over the coming days. We do still have many roads flooded so we ask that before heading out for work in the morning (or this evening for the night owls) that you: 1. Check Live Traffic www.livetraffic.com and avoid travelling through flooded areas or 2. Check Transport NSW https://transportnsw.info/alerts#/metro-train and 3. Please, please, please, DO NOT drive through floodwater - it is just not worth the risk!
