23.01.2022 ** Intense November heatwave spreading into NSW and QLD ** An intense November heatwave is beginning to spread into western parts of New South Wales and Queensl...and today, and is expected to persist into early December as a slow moving and very hot airmass pools over the region. A very dry November across large parts of Australia (despite La Nina) due to persistent upper level ridging has allowed the very hot airmass to build across the nation over the last few weeks, originally developing over the nation's northwest. A trough of low pressure is bringing this airmass to the east of the country now, where it is expected to linger for at least the next week. Temperatures are expected to be more typical of a mid summer heatwave rather than late spring, with the mercury expected to soar into the mid to high 40s across some inland areas over consecutive days, challenging the record 2009 November heatwave. Western parts of NSW and QLD are expected to scorch, with towns such as Bourke, Thargomindah, Birdsville, Wilcannia, Walgett and White Cliffs likely to see at least five to six consecutive days of 40 degree plus temperatures, and some locations possibly longer. Bourke may reach up to 46 degrees on Sunday and Tuesday, whilst Birdsville is expected to see 46-47 degree heat between Friday 27th November and Tuesday 1st December. Whilst some may think these temperatures over inland areas are typical, for this time of year they are very unusual (and generally occur in January and February), with only November 2009 and November 2014 seeing similar heat for this time of year. The slopes, ranges and eastern plains (Dubbo, Moree, Tamworth, Charleville, Inglewood etc) will feel the worst of the heat a little later, with the hottest airmass affecting these regions from the weekend and into early December, with temperatures reaching into the mid-high 30s and low-to mid 40s (depending on elevation). Further east will be spared the worst heat, with weak southerly changes also preventing heat from persisting over too many consecutive days. Sydney will see its hottest days this weekend reaching into the mid 30s in the city, and up to 42 degrees in the west over both days, with a secondary burst of heat on the first day of December. Brisbane (and northeast NSW and southeast QLD) will see their hottest days between Sunday 29th and Wednesday 2nd, before a cooler change. Seabreezes will moderate temperatures on the coast (limiting to mid 30s), however inland areas (such as Ipswich) will see consecutive days in the high 30s or low 40s. The hot airmass is expected to break down over the east of the country within the first week of December due to a cold front and an increase of moisture, showers and storms. 23.01.2022 Overnight heat breaks records in New South Wales Andrew Casper-Richardson, Sunday November 29, 2020 - 10:57 EDT After a blisteringly hot day, parts of New South Wales have sweated through their hottest November night in many decades. On Saturday a low pressure trough directed a very hot airmass from the interior over New South Wales. Cloud increased during the day and this coupled with strong northwesterly winds minimised nocturnal cooling, trapping much of the day's warmth.... Image: High 850hPa temperatures over NSW at 2am Sunday from the ECMWF model. Sydney had an overnight low of just 25.3 degrees (9.6 above average), just after 1am on Sunday. This was the highest November minimum in the 162 years of records and the highest of any month in nearly four years. Elsewhere in the Sydney Basin, Bankstown's low of 28.3 degrees was the highest in Sydney and is 13.9 above average, making it the hottest November night in 49 years. It was a similar story up and down eastern New South Wales. In the Hunter, Mangrove Mountain dropped to just 25.5 degrees (11.7 above average) and Nobbys Head dipped to 24.1 (7.7 above average). These were the hottest November nights in 23 and 60 years respectively. In Ulladulla (South Coast) the low of 20.6 degrees was the highest in November since records began in 1990. Although not as widespread, western parts of the state also had very warm nights. In the Upper Western, some towns failed to drop below 30 degrees including Bourke, where it only fell to 31.3 which is 13.9 above average. For those along who have trouble sleeping in oppressive conditions, relief is on the way in the form of a vigorous southerly change. The change will roar along the New South Wales coast on Sunday, reaching Sydney late afternoon. https://www.weatherzone.com.au//overnight-heat-brea/532976

09.01.2022 November heat records could be broken during sweltering weekend in NSW Saturday November 28, 2020 - 14:59 EDT ABC image People are flocking to Lake Parramatta to escape the heat. - ABC November heat records could be broken today as the mercury climbs across New South Wales ? and there is no southerly change due until Sunday afternoon.... Helen Kirkup from the Bureau of Meteorology said Western Sydney would swelter, with Richmond, Penrith, Blacktown and Liverpool forecast to hit 41 degrees Celsius. "For the city, we've currently got the maximum forecast at 39C, but I wouldn't rule out that it could go slightly higher as the westerly winds keep pushing the sea breeze out," she said. "Tomorrow the westerly will come right through to the coast, so temperatures between the high 30s and well past 40C are expected until the change comes through." Ms Kirkup said weather records were expected to be broken as the hot weather set in overnight and stuck around for much of Sunday. "We are borderline [breaking] records for November across the Sydney Metropolitan area, places up in the Hunter," she said. "We think the strong westerly wind that's coming through will actually stop temperatures dropping overnight." Inland NSW is experiencing temperatures between 40C and 45C today, with Broken Hill expected to reach 44C and Wilcannia 45C. "The potential of grass fires starting is probably the biggest concern," Ms Kirkup said. A total fire ban has been declared for parts of New South Wales today due to the hot and windy conditions. No fires can be lit in the Lower Central West Plains, Eastern Riverina, Southern Riverina, and Northern Riverina regions. Total fire bans are also in place across parts of Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. Rural Fire Service Commissioner Rob Rogers warned the rapid spread of grass fires could catch people unawares. "If those fires do start, particularly in those grassland areas, they'll move really, really quickly," he said. "People don't want to get caught in front of a grassfire. "They're different to a bushfire. They burn really hot really quick." - ABC ABC 2020 https://www.weatherzone.com.au//november-heat-recor/532969
