19.01.2022 Together: Resisting, Supporting, Healing! Today is IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, Interphobia and Biphobia); and it is a special day in our calendars. It was on this day in 1990 that the World Health Organisation declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). It had already been removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 2(DSM2) in 1973 by the American Psychiatric Association but ...was swiftly replaced in the DSM3 in 1980 with a classification to signify transsexuality as a mental disordergo figure! Some 40 years later, transsexuality, now known as gender dysphoria still exists as a mental disorder in the DSM5 but the World Health Organisation declassified it as a mental disorder in the ICD11. May 17 gained further significance in 2004 with the very first IDAHO. The T was added in 2009 and in recent years the B & I were finally included. To show our strength, IDAHOBIT is now celebrated in more than 130 countries including 37 countries where same-sex acts are illegal. We have gained some rights through legislation with the Marriage Equality Act in 2017, modernisation of the NT Births Deaths and Marriages Act in 2018, but more could be done, especially in strengthening the Anti-Discrimination Act here in the NT, and the continued fight against specific anti-trans legislation that is currently playing out in NSW. That legislation would see making any reference to gender diversity in schools illegal and target the parents and teachers of trans and gender diverse kids for being inclusive. As a society, we still have a long way to go to ensure equity and inclusion for all our communities, and that’s why days like this are significant in raising awareness that our diversity is our strength. Professor Milton Diamond, a colleague of mine who has worked for decades in this area summed it up nicely when he said, Nature loves diversity, but society hates it. So stand up and be counted todayand help us celebrate the power of being us. See our Program - https://www.ntahc.org.au/lgbti-living-well #NTAHC #LGBTIlivingwell #IDAHOBIT

19.01.2022 International Whoarze Day, and we'll collaborating with our member SWOP NSW to host an event for seks werker peers to discuss proposed legislation to provide anti-discrimination protections for past and present SW. The event will include a discussion about the bill with its sponsor Abigail Boyd from the NSW Greens, as well as some SW-only discussion. This will be a great opportunity to get involved with the campaign for the legislation and to discuss the potential material impact of the bill. The lack of anti-discrimination protections for our community has long held back justice for NSW seks werkers, and it's time to make a change! Register below to attend via Zoom. https://swop.formstack.com/forms/workshop...

11.01.2022 2nd June - Today is International Whores Day !! Why is today marked with respect for sex worker rights? What direct action took place on this day?... The 2nd June has been chosen as International Whores Day in commemoration of the storming and takeover of a church in Lyon in June 1975 by sex workers and their supporters. The action was in protest against the increasing number of arrests of street sex workers, police harassment of them and the lack of interest shown by police in solving murders and other crimes committed against them. The sex workers and supporters challenged the police to come and arrest anybody who they could identify as a sex worker, making the point that most sex workers are ordinary women doing a job and cannot be told apart from other women. Inspired by this action sex workers all over the world started organizing, giving rise to the modern day sex workers rights movement. -Leanne Melling SWOP NT Coordinator
