22.01.2022 NTFA Inc. President Scott Rigby today responded to recent articles that have appeared in The Advocate newspaper over a proposed salary cap and comments made from footballing identities down the North West Coast. Below is a copy of the transcript as sent to The Advocate. To: The Advocate Newspaper... RECENT MEDIA REPORTS AROUND SALARY CAP Following recent reports in The Advocate Newspaper surrounding the loss of several players to NTFA in recent times, a league which does not have a salary cap, we feel it is necessary to respond to some of these reports and comments. NWFL President Andrew Richardson rightly points out that the idea of a Statewide salary cap is a Football Tasmania Board one, however, what Mr Richardson fails to state is that he and I are both foundation members of this Board, which was established in February 2019. I along with the NTFA have been leading the calls for the establishment and implementation of a statewide salary cap, a fact that Andrew also fails to mention. In response to another comment made in a recent article, where reference was made of being hopeful the NTFA would show some leadership" and back the idea of a salary cap, we have and will continue to do so, which is evident in the actions we are taking, and not in uneducated statements in the media such as these. It is also disappointing that one of our member clubs has been brought into the conversation publicly when they have done nothing wrong under the current system. This responsibility for the system lies with us as administrators. I do, however, agree with Wynyard Football Club President Kent Jackson who said the sooner changes are made around salary caps, and the sooner they can get an independent person around clubs, the better. Let’s hope that all associations can move forward, and continue the great work already started for the betterment of footy right across the state and ensure that our goal of a salary cap is realised sooner rather than later. Scott Rigby President - NTFA
