05.01.2022 Dear Friends, It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that on behalf of the Namatjira family, that we share the passing of Kumantjai G Pannka on the 22nd of August. She passed while attended by her family at the Alice Springs Hospital-Palliative care unit. Kumantjai took the role as caretaker for many. Her kind and generous heart found her the adopted mother and grandmother to many, all the while remaining a resilient and strong-willed woman with a witty and wry sense of h...umour. She was a crusader that displayed a strong voice, pride in her heritage and was central to the social justice campaign for the copyright to be returned the Namatjira family. Kumantjai carved for herself a successful career as a talented watercolour landscape artist, carrying on the Hermannsburg School tradition of her forbears: grandfather Albert Namatjira and Father Claude Pannka. This is a great loss for all that knew her and for those that appreciate her outstanding talent. She remains an important national figure with her life and talent warranting celebration for her significant contribution to the art world; the legacy she carried forward and leaves behind.
