25.01.2022 Well be at the Walk for Justice 2013 on 14 May, raising money for community legal centres to provide free legal help for disadvantaged people who cant afford to pay and cant get Legal Aid. Will we see you there? http://www.qpilch.org.au/cms/details.asp?ID=661

24.01.2022 Do you volunteer? Did you know that volunteers are not always covered by workers comp? Many organisations also dont have injury insurance for their volunteers, as they cant afford it. If you get hurt on the job you may be left with the bill! Check your organisations policies and make sure youre making an informed decision in the risks you take on.

24.01.2022 Congratulations to our newest solicitor, Tien Nguyen, who was admitted yesterday!

21.01.2022 New Year, new business? Be aware that registering a name on the Australian Business Register doesnt solve copyright issues. Consider trademarking your business or trading names, and remember to check that youre not infringing others rights.

20.01.2022 Congratulations to Rachel Sloper and Chris Mills of our office, who were admitted on Tuesday! Once their practising certificates are issued they will be our newest solicitors!

19.01.2022 Good session with the ACNC team on Tuesday. Some tips we heard: even though company secretaries can sign ASIC forms on behalf of their organisation, they cant do this for ACNC forms. This seems to be a legislative oversight. The ACNC team also indicated that organisations already complying with the directors duties in the Corporations Act should find complying with the ACNC governance standards relatively simple. Consultation closes on the standards on 15 Feb - get your submission in!

19.01.2022 New Bill introduced into federal Parliament on Wednesday will reduce the baby bonus for subsequent children of eligible parents to $3,000 from $5,000 if passed. This would apply to those who become eligible for a bonus for a subsequent child on or after 1 July this year.

18.01.2022 Good job to ACNC and ATO who have been fast-tracking applications for NSW fire disaster relief funds. We have had an application come through our office and the fast is true!

13.01.2022 The federal government has released draft legislation redefining what charity means under the law of Australia. A lot of organisations will find they might now be charities; others might find their status harder to defend under the proposed laws. Check out our quick overview here: http://bit.ly/XA5tj5. Make sure you have your say by Friday 3 May 2013.

13.01.2022 Our thoughts are with all those affected by the widespread fires in southern Australia.

12.01.2022 Brisbane Times is reporting that Brisbane City Council will ask the State Govt for power to issue licences to collect for charity in the CBD. Charity collectors or chuggers can be controversial - but charities say it works. Check out the story at http://bit.ly/1a46kYB

12.01.2022 New governance standards for charities registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC) seem on the way for 1 July 2013, with approval notice agreed by Senate yesterday and slated for House of Representatives today. Looking forward to ACNC guidance, promised this month, on how charities will be expected to comply.

03.01.2022 Well, it didnt happen on Wednesday, but it did happen on Thursday: disallowance motion for ACNC governance standards withdrawn by Senator Fifield. Were pretty sure this means the standards will apply from 1 July. ACNC told us they would release their guidance info shortly after situation resolved in Parliament. Heres hoping its today!

01.01.2022 An iWill? Yes, its happened...but the circumstances were unique. Dont rely on informal documents that need court permission to be binding. Get a proper Will that makes life easier for those you leave behind. http://bit.ly/1at28ld

01.01.2022 More big news for charities yesterday was passing of Charities Bill 2013 - changing the legal definition of what charity means in Australia. The ACNC, ATO and other Commonwealth agencies will use it to decide who is a charity and who isnt. Still expected to apply from 1 Jan 2014 at this stage. Just one important feature of the Bill = charity means not-for-profit. If you dont have an NFP clause in your governing rules, now might be the time to change that...
