07.01.2022 Opportunity: Indigenous LGBQTI+ Inclusive Practices in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Workshop Dameyon Bonson, is an Indigenous gay male from the NT and recognised as Indigenous suicide prevention subject matter expert, specifically in Indigenous LGBQTI+ suicide prevention. Dameyon has been commissioned to deliver Indigenous LGBQTI+ Inclusive Practices in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Workshop for organisations, community groups and departments that work with A...boriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, aged 15-25 of the Greater Darwin Region. There are 2 workshops in Palmerston and 2 in Darwin. Dates and locations: FOR: All Youth organisations, services, community groups and programs that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people access. Palmerston Tuesday of 24th (Tuesday) Darwin 26th of November (Thursday) FOR: All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, services, community groups and programs. Palmerston 1st of December (Tuesday) Darwin 3rd of 3rd of December (Thursday) Background: Indigenous Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Trans and Intersex (LGBQTI) people experience additional societal challenges which can contribute to the increased development of depression, anxiety, and alcohol and other drug problems as well as many more of life’s difficulties and challenges. In their help seeking efforts, services that are not inclusive in their practice can create extra obstacles, affecting service delivery and restricting optimal health outcomes for Indigenous LGBQTI+ people. This workshop is to enhance the current service delivery of organisation and groups across suicide prevention and health as well as other community and social services. The workshop: The Indigenous LGBQTI+ Inclusive Practices in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Workshop is a full day workforce capability program aimed to increase Indigenous LGBQTI+ access to health and community services. It achieves this by upskilling organisations and individual’s knowledge of the heightened suicide risk, as well as many other social issues, for Indigenous LGBQTI+ people. Participants are assisted in identifying the inherent health risks at the intersection of the dual experiences of being both Indigenous and LGBQTI+ identifying. This includes the social determinants of health specific to Indigenous LGBQTI+ people. These workshops are a targeted approach to upskilling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, groups, as well as youth programs and services that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people access. 02.01.2022 Some of the rich material workshopped during a recent My Recovery program. Participants learnt strategies to self-manage their mental health, alcohol and other drug related issues in a peer learning environment. The peer environment allows people to learn from others who have walked the same path and share the knowledge and skills they have developed over time. It provides an opportunity for people to recognise the strength and resilience they have developed despite the adver...sity they have experienced. When people see themselves through a strengths-based lens they are more engaged in their own recovery. The material in the video relates to the advantages and disadvantages of disclosing your mental illness at work, wellness mapping (strategies to respond to future episodes), personal recovery strategies that complement clinically based supports, and an exploration of the bio-psychosocial-cultural causes and treatment strategies for mental health. https://www.ntmhc.org.au/my-recovery-peer-led-education-pr/
