25.01.2022 Housing affects health in many ways. At the broad scale, housing disadvantage, unaffordable housing and housing of poor quality have been the focus of much recent Australian research. More specific housing drivers of health, such as household mould, injury, overcrowding, noise, cold and damp, have received renewed global attention. The time is right for Australia to put housing and health in the same room and develop a national healthy housing agenda. Professor Rebecca Bentle...y and Professor Emma Baker via The Conversation pose the following questions to our governments, research community and stakeholders: - How can we respond in a nationally co-ordinated way to the emerging challenges that COVID-19 presents to healthy housing? - Who should be included in the conversation and in developing the agenda and what is the role of the Commonwealth Department of Health? - Where does responsibility for providing healthy housing lie? - What is the minimum standard of housing that we want to provide to all Australians? - What are the healthy housing priorities? Warmth? Mould? Tenure security? Affordability? - What groups in our society demand immediate attention? Children? Renters? People with disabilities? - How will an Australian healthy housing agenda fit within a national housing agenda (when one exists)? #HousingNT #auspol #ntpol https://theconversation.com/mould-and-damp-health-costs-are?

22.01.2022 The Northern Territory has the highest rates of homelessness in Australia, at 6% of our population. We know that additional housing is necessary to address homelessness, and that affordable, appropriate housing provides people with the security and stability to live healthier lives, do well in school, get a job, and join in the social life of their community. We need a fairer funding deal for the NT. https://ntshelter.org.au/

19.01.2022 Ahead of the NT Budget being handed down today, Peter McMillan spoke with ABC Darwin about the urgent need for short stay accommodation in Katherine, where more than 90% of visitors coming to town for medical care sleep rough. 16.01.2022 Frankly, we’re growing tired of NT homelessness stats continuing to deteriorate while other states are seeing their numbers come down. At the moment the issue here is getting insufficient attention, too little action, and a paltry amount of funding, especially from the Cwlth Govt. The latest Australian Institute of Health and Welfare - AIHW data on specialist homelessness services reveals that the Northern Territory continues to buck the national trend of fewer people present...ing for housing and other assistance, with a rise of 7% in the Territory compared to 1.5% fall elsewhere. The increase in clients was driven by a staggering rise in young people presenting alone (up 63% in the past two years) and further growth in Aboriginal persons presenting to homelessness services (up 16% for the same period). An inadequate supply of safe & secure housing is causing a greater number of people to be put at risk of homelessness & is a problem that is continuing to worsen. In the past 2 yrs urban public housing applications are up 22%, but we have 47 LESS houses now than we did 4 yrs ago. The Territory Government must get to work to attract the necessary cash from other sources if it doesn’t have sufficient cash of its own. It’s their responsibility. 15.01.2022 In an Anti-Poverty Week webinar with Northern Territory Council of Social Service CEO Deborah Di Natale, our Exec Officer Peter McMillan set-out a path for the Northern Territory that would ensure all residents have access to safe, secure and affordable housing while supporting the building and construction sector to get the job done. 14.01.2022 NT Shelter's response to the 2020/21 NT Budget: From Tasmania to Queensland, and everywhere between, State and Territory governments have recognised the need to up the ante on social housing as a lever to rebuild their economies after COVID. For some reason, despite a loud chorus of endorsement from economists across the nation, this opportunity has not yet been grasped in the Northern Territory. We realise the fiscal challenges that the NT Government is facing and that diff...icult decisions need to be taken on how to best support the economy, but we’re very disappointed to see no specific commitment to short stay visitor accommodation for Katherine, nor any clear messaging in the Budget regarding how the NT Government is going to tackle the estimated 10,000 house shortfall outlined in its Housing Strategy. The Northern Territory Government needs to take a leadership role and signal its intentions on how it is going to deliver on its housing and homelessness strategies and ultimately ensure there are enough houses to meet our current and future needs. #ntpol #NTBudget #housingnt #Housing #Homelessness #Community https://ntshelter.org.au/document/8867/

13.01.2022 Demand for urban public housing has skyrocketed in the Territory jumping 22% in two financial years: In 2017/2018 there were 3873 applications for public housing and in 2019/2020 there were 4773 a jump of 900 applications. The Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development’s annual report also found in 2019-20, urban housing stock decreased compared to the last financial year, largely due to the disposal of 75 dwellings during the demolition of John St...okes Square in Nightcliff. It is concerning that the NT are not keeping up with demand for affordable public housing. NT Shelter are calling for a housing masterplan for our urban regions to be developed immediately. #HousingNT #NTpol #urbanplanning https://ntshelter.org.au//major-nt-squeeze-on-public-hous/

09.01.2022 A lack of appropriate and affordable housing, and the significant and disproportionate level of homelessness, is a significant contributing factor to domestic and family violence incidents across the Northern Territory. 46% (more than 4,400 women per year), of women seeking support from homelessness services in the Northern Territory cite domestic violence as the main reason for seeking assistance. The rate of demand for homelessness services in the NT is three times... that of other states and territories and the level of unmet demand is twice as high. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the Northern Territory has the nation’s highest victimisation rate for selected domestic and family violence-related offences in Australia. 2019 figures obtained from NT police reports show a rate of 1610 victims per 100,000 people. The first three months of 2020 show a 20 per cent increase on the same months the previous year representing 1626.5 DFV victims per 100,000 people. By comparison, the submission highlights, WA has victimisation rates of around 728 victims per 100,000. Without adequate, safe and affordable housing options, too many women and children in the Northern Territory will continue to be turned away from over stretched services and continue to live in vulnerable and dangerous circumstances. via NT Independent: https://ntshelter.org.au//nt-women-forced-to-live-among-u/

04.01.2022 Encouraging news! In its landmark report for winning investment and creating jobs, the NT Economic Reconstruction Commission has highlighted the necessity of quality affordable urban housing growth keeping pace with the needs of a growing economy. The Commission has driven a firm stake in the ground in this report, emphasising access to safe and affordable housing as a crucial factor in achieving economic goals. This must drive real and concerted action to investigate the... volume and mix of housing infrastructure that’s needed, and act decisively, said NT Shelter's Executive Officer Peter McMillan. The Territory already had a lot of catching up to do before it could be confident of housing a growing population. We need to roll up the sleeves and get started on a housing masterplan for our regions immediately. This is an opportunity for a true partnership between government, industry and non-government leaders to assess and address the challenge from here, identifying how we will attract the cash that’s required to get houses built where they’re needed. 04.01.2022 Our Executive Officer spoke with The NT News late last year about the latest Specialist Homelessness Services Annual Report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, which showed a 7% increase in people seeking homelessness support in the NT, and a staggering 63% rise in the number of young people presenting to homelessness services over the past two years. The NT receives a really paltry amount of federal government funding for homelessness services, We get only 1.3 per cent of the funding because that’s our population share, but Alice Springs, for example, has a homelessness rate that is 17 times higher than the national average.

04.01.2022 This year Anti-Poverty Week focused on the desperate national need for affordable housing. We joined forces with Northern Territory Council of Social Service to investigate the Territory’s housing challenges. 01.01.2022 1-in-6 renters across Australia requested either a rent deferral or rent reduction because of COVID-19-induced financial hardship, new Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute - AHURI research shows. However, a little over a third of those who asked say their landlord would not negotiate or did not respond to their request.
