23.01.2022 Welcome 2021! We’re excited to welcome the new year and look forward to the new possibilities 2021 will bring us. We have officially returned to the office today and can’t wait to get back into the swing of things.

22.01.2022 Well said Senator McCarthy. Thank you for your continued support to the NT Working Women’s Centre and to working women in the Territory. We hope your voices are heard...

21.01.2022 NTWWC would like to acknowledge National Reconciliation Week with this year’s theme: ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action.’ Prior to our recent funding insecurity NTWWC were working on our Reconciliation Action Plan- with actions. We hope to get back to this as soon as we can. https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-reconciliation-/

20.01.2022 As Victoria emerges from lockdown with restrictions easing, female unemployment in the state has never been worse. ABS monthly labour force data shows that we now have the highest number of Victorian women who are unemployed, ever. There are a number of attributing factors which have led to this alarming statistic such as job cuts, less secure and lower paid work and pressure on women to leave jobs to fulfill the primary carer role in their household. ... 17.01.2022 Each year, Australia welcomes tens of thousands of young backpackers looking to travel the country and find agriculture work under the Federal Government scheme. Unfortunately, travellers are not always guaranteed the Australian dream as many become used for cheap labour and some are sexually harassed. Wage exploitation has grown in prevalence as a number of employers take advantage of migrant workers hoping to fulfil requirements to be granted another year on their visa. Do...cuments obtained by the ABC under FOI laws show that last financial year the FWO completed 1,647 formal complaints related to the migrant workforce. 14.01.2022 Thank you Senator McCarthy for your support. We will be watching the budget closely tonight. Fingers crossed women of the NT that we have been provided for.

14.01.2022 NT Working Women’s Centre would like to acknowledge National Volunteer Week and give thanks to our volunteers: Sherree, Saskia and members of our Committee of Management, including all those who have given to the NTWWC over the years. It is truly appreciated https://www.volunteeringaustralia.org/get-involved/nvw/

12.01.2022 A nice surprise in today’s NT Newspaper within the Solomon Sun. Thank you Luke John Gosling, Member for Solomon and your team for continuing to advocate for us. Our work is not yet done and help is still needed to keep us going!

12.01.2022 The call for further government action to protect the safety of women and children has never been greater. In May, a Senate Committee had been established to conduct an inquiry into violence against women and ended three months ahead of schedule. The inquiry did not seek a single submission, hold any hearings or make any recommendations an unacceptable response to a national crisis. Australia’s issues of domestic violence against women continues to heighten following the in...crease in working from home arrangements. Large numbers of women have lost their livelihoods, homes and critical support networks during this period and have been forced onto the streets. For these women, the likelihood of experiencing violence increases considerably. Unfortunately, this was the case for Aysha Baty who was forced into homelessness and murdered. This tragedy is the latest of many cases of gendered violence in the country. Read the full article here https://womensagenda.com.au//abhorrent-murder-of-aysha-ba/

11.01.2022 My Recovery is a free multi-session education and support program that is facilitated by peers: people with their own lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery. There are afternoon and evening sessions available for anyone with unmet mental health challenges in the Darwin area.

11.01.2022 Our Director spoke with Sam Jonscher at ABC following the Federal Budget announcement last week of $200k for working women's centres, and what this mean for the NTWWC and working women in the Territory. 10.01.2022 Thank you Minister Moss for continuing to recognise (and advocate) for the importance of our work to women in the Territory as the only specialist women’s workplace rights service.

08.01.2022 - WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY - The Domestic and Family Violence Work Aware training session was conducted with excellent organisation, structure and expertise. The training is relevant to everybody in an organisation to become more aware about the impact of domestic violence in the workplace, and the rights of those affected. The session was extremely engaging, and I have recommended it to many people and will continue to do so. Maurice Blackburn Lawyers

08.01.2022 - WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY - I found the session informative, interactive and one of the better workshops I’ve attended. It included some group work where all staff did very well in contributing and helping to develop a plan for implementing our own domestic violence policies. It was great to see a cross section of staff working together. Barkly Regional Council

08.01.2022 Stress Less in the Park is on! Join Stephanie at the Alice Springs Civic Centre lawns today as she shares some information and activities as a part of #MentalHe...althWeek. We are championing 'Building Mentally Healthy Communities' as part of a showcase of the many support services available in the Alice Springs region. Thanks to Mental Health Association Central Australia for organising many great events this week!

06.01.2022 What a week it has been! Working Women’s Centres were pleased with the small win in this weeks Federal budget that would enable our doors to remain open for a few more months.....but we need certainty. Working women in the NT need to know that there will be a safe place and specialist service there to support them if something goes wrong. Thank you to those who stood by us and spoke out in support of us- Luke John Gosling, Member for Solomon, Senator Larissa Waters, QLD and S...enator Malarndirri McCarthy, and of course our sisters in SA. Could not have done it without you. Lovely to also see Angela Tomazos of BPW Australia turn up to say hi and show her support, and to catch up with Tanya Plibersek, Shadow Minister for women and long time supporter of Working Women’s Centres. #workingwomenqld #senatormalarndirrimccarthy #workingwomenscentresa #bpwaust

06.01.2022 10 October marks world mental health day, a day aimed at raising awareness of mental health issues around the world. Today provides an opportunity for people to share their personal stories and health care workers to share what changes need to be done to make mental health a reality for people worldwide. We encourage all workplaces to consider what else they can be doing to support the mental health of employees, particularly those in minority groups who may not have access to help.

06.01.2022 Hello from Canberra. Fiona Hunt from #workingwomenqld and I are at Parliament House continuing our fight for funding to continue to exist and for the implementation of Recommendation 49 of the Respect@Work Report. Today we spoke with Senators Penny Wong and Jenny McAlister and the office of Senator Sam McMahon. We appreciate everyone’s time and support including the #workingwomenscentresa who continues to provide assistance from afar. What a team!

06.01.2022 Senator Larissa Waters asking Federal Attorney General Michaela Cash in Parliament estimates during the week about further Federal funding for the Working Women’s Centres. Last time we checked the NT and QLD Working Women’s were not combined as one service. Maybe this could explain the small interim funding: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V0ARc5rjXRM

05.01.2022 Do you have any workplace needs?

05.01.2022 We were able to visit the Girl’s Academy at a local high school in Alice Springs to deliver a Community Education training to a group of year 10, 11 and 12 students. The Girl’s Academy is an in-school mentoring and leadership program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls. We ran three sessions which focused on the importance of understanding your work rights. It was a productive day where the students interacted with the topic and were engaged throughout the entire ...session. If your school or workplace would benefit from a training session, please enquire today to learn how Work Aware can provide assistance.

03.01.2022 Our Alice Spring team were out there last Saturday 8 May 2021 celebrating cultural diversity as part of Harmony Day! At the NT Working Women’s Centre, we help all women.

03.01.2022 Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. One in six Australian women have been subjected to physical and or sexual violence by a current or previous cohabitating partner. Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today. It remains largely unreported due to the stigma and shame surrounding it.
