25.01.2022 It's Wear It Purple Day! Time to show solidarity and support for LGBTQIA+ young people. This year the theme is We Are The Change, and people are encouraged to post pics of their purple outfits today to show young people that they are supported, loved, and empowered! LGBTQIA+ young people who also use drugs are doubly vulnerable in a society that favours heteronormativity and treats drug use as a criminal issue instead of a health issue. We promise to continue working to be as inclusive as we can be in our advocacy and allyship to queer communities. Here's a snap of some of our DanceWize NSW crew last festival season (before face masks!), rocking their purple shirts and caring for our community. #WIPD2020

25.01.2022 As another Australian receives the death sentence in an overseas court for attempting to transport drugs, we are faced yet again with the deplorable and dangerous terms of international drug control conventions. NSW actor, motivational speaker, investor and family man Karm Gillespie has been given the death sentence in China after six years of imprisonment. Accused of carrying 7.5 kg of ice in his luggage when he attempted to leave the country in 2013, Gillespie disappeare...d into a Chinese jail. The recent announcement has given him his first opportunity for legal representation and a health and welfare check, however less than 1% of appeals see rulings overturned in China. While we see the application of drug control treaties at their worst in countries that support capital punishment, it is important to remember that Australia is also a signatory and contributes to the significant harms arising from drug prohibition both at home and abroad. There is nothing right about these circumstances. Not China’s decision or the use of capital punishment. Not prohibition or the stigma and discrimination that underpins it. Not the timing or the use of drug users as political pawns. Prohibition has failed to deliver any tangible benefits over the hundred years it has been implemented. Prohibitionist policies drive drug using underground and has contributed significantly to the risks and harms associated with drug use, including the vilification and outrageously high death toll of drug users. NUAA calls for cogent and conclusive drug law reform all around the world. The evidence base around the failure of prohibition is complete. The tears have been shed. It’s time for change. 24.01.2022 We need Opioid Treatment Programs to adapt flexible and safe take home measures both during and after the pandemic. It's time for global leaders, healthcare officials and workers, and policy makers to acknowledge the research and commit to proper accessibility of Opioid Agonist Treatment through take home dosing. Community needs first! #TakeHomeOAT #PeersInThePandemic Harm Reduction Victoria (Australia)

23.01.2022 As of last week, importing precursor chemicals for the manufacture of illicit drugs, like ice, will be much harder with harsher penalties. The Morrison government has passed amendments that will greatly restrict importation of chemicals that have "no legitimate industrial or commercial use". Under the Criminal Code Act and Customs Act, penalties for importing precursor chemicals without a licence or permit range from two years imprisonment and/or a fine of $88,800 for possession, up to 28 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $1,243,200 for more serious offences.

21.01.2022 Have a read of Australia's history of sex worker activism! Sex workers continue to be erased and marginalised by systemic violence, and yet it is often the lack of legal protection and recognition that causes the most harm... much like the case is for people who use drugs. 'Nothing About Us Without Us' means that the voices of those with direct lived experience of systemic harms must be central in the fight for their dignity and equality. We stand with sex workers in NSW and beyond! #SexWorkerPride2020 #SexWorkIsRealWork Reposted from Sex Workers Outreach Project Scarlet Alliance - Australian Sex Workers Association

21.01.2022 Every year on Dec 1 we commemorate World AIDS Day, acknowledging our strong harm reduction roots as embedded in our community's response to the HIV outbreak in Australia. 16.01.2022 "Time changes. Drugs change. Laws change. But whatever our fancy ‘new’ drugs or ‘old’ drugs or a bit of both snorting, injecting, smoking, eating or shafting it is time we joined together as one community of peers that stands tall as we support each other. The older people nurturing and mentoring the younger ones. The young revitalising the movement of people who use drugs. Both are represented in this issue of UN, proudly telling their stories to improve the health, dignity and human rights of other people who use drugs. So hear us roar in numbers too big to ignore as we rock hard, together as we should be. One huge band. Many songs." Read the full editorial from the latest UN below! Inspiring words from one of our own, Leah McLeod

13.01.2022 Think about this: You could spend your life in a US jail for selling a few Oxys to a friend - but when a sophisticated, multi-billion dollar drug profit scheme gets busted and pleads guilty to half a million deaths, not a single person goes to jail. OxyContin manufacturer Purdue Pharma pleaded guilty to criminal charges over its role in the US opioid crisis. 450, 000 American people have died by opioid overdose in the last 30 years while the pharmaceutical company lied, brib...ed and ignored its way through health and safety measures in order to keep oxycodone scripts flowing. All earning them around $30 billion. And while the company has been fined and forced to restructure, no persons have been charged. It is plain and clear that the war on drugs is a war on people. It is a tool used strategically to disrupt racially targeted communities, to create prison populations, to create wealth for the wealthy, and to bolster drug policies that reproduce more of the same. 11.01.2022 Larry Pierce is retiring After 21 years as CEO of the Network of Alcohol and other Drugs Agencies (NADA), Larry has made massive contributions to the drug and alcohol sector - NADA being the peak non-government organisation in NSW. Larry grew NADA from a two person organisation with limited capacity to support its member agencies to the capacity building, member service oriented organisation it is today. NUAA has worked side by side with NADA on many committees and pro...jects over the years, including the User's News treatment issue and the Language Matters project, which works to change stigmatising language around people who use drugs. The Language Matters project uses 'person-centred' language that focuses on the person, not their substance use, advocating for the dignity of our community. Larry has been a strong supporter of NUAA as an independent organisation over many, many years and is a current NUAA Board member. We wish Larry the very best and a big congratulations on his outstanding contributions to AoD services in NSW! Check out the downloadable Language Matters resource on our website via the link below.

11.01.2022 Drug Warning Counterfeit Alprazolam (Xanax/Kalma) July 2020 NSW Health has released a warning about numerous batches of fake alprazolam/Xanax currently circulating in Australia. Counterfeit alprazolam 2mg tablets have tested positive for substances other than alprazolam/Xanax, including illicit benzodiazepines and hayfever medication.... These counterfeit pills have been pressed to look like branded alprazolam tablets and have been sold in counterfeit pill containers/boxes, which may lead people to believe they are taking pharmaceutical grade pills. NSW Health has confirmed that there are counterfeit Kalma, Xanax, Mylan and Sandoz brand tablets in circulation. These counterfeit tablets contain no alprazolam and are likely to contain unwanted or dangerous ingredients. Some substances in these pills, such as etizolam and flubromazepam, may still be dependence-forming. Undeclared substances that may be present in these tablets include: etizolam, flubromazepam, cyproheptadine, promethazine, and amantadine. These substances have been found in counterfeit alprazolam in Australia recently, in various doses and combinations Etizolam and flubromazepam are benzodiazepines, meaning they are chemically related to alprazolam/Xanax. However, these drugs have different effects than alprazolam, and their effects are likely to be different between people. Things to look out for: unusually alert/energetic after dosing time to come on may differ from Xanax You're more likely to have a bad time or do something you'll regret if you mix benzos with alcohol or other drugs. Mixing benzos with alcohol, opioids, GHB, pregabalin/Lyrica, and other downers greatly increases your risk of overdose. Remember to stay safe! Don’t redose - Multiple doses are dangerous Avoid mixing with alcohol or other drugs Don’t use alone Seek medical help ASAP, call 000 if feeling unwell Full warning here: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//counterfeit-alprazolam-july Counterfeit products bough online are not regulated. They could contain the wrong amount of the active ingredient, or none of what you want at all. 07.01.2022 Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. We honour today those who have lost their lives to transphobic violence. This day commemorates Nov 20, 1999 when the first vigil was held to honour the memory of African American trans activist Rita Hester, who was murdered in 1998. Transgender Day of Remembrance is now a global event that draws urgent attention to the violence inflicted upon trans and gender diverse peoples. Join the online event tonight to commemorate the legacy of lost friends and family, and experience a line up of Black and Indigenous transgender and gender-diverse performers, activists, and artists.

06.01.2022 An important article for our festival community! "A NSW Government review has found no change in the number of serious drug-related presentations since it imposed tough regulations on music festivals..." Immense restrictions, multiple festival closures, and still "no change" to the number of drug-related incidents. As we begin to imagine what the next festival season could look like, we ask that the evidence speak for itself. Harm reduction is one of the 3 pillars of Austra...lia's 'harm minimisation' approach to drugs, and while it receives the least attention - it is the most important. As long as punishment increases, the harms associated with drugs will not go away. Support and safety are what people need. Let's imagine a post-COVID festival community that cares for each other, and has the freedom to connect through music and dancing, without the dangers of fear and stigma.

02.01.2022 The new target - to reduce Indigenous imprisonment rates by just 15 percent by 2031 - is hugely unambiguous. This nation can do much better. The federal government has introduced 16 new targets for Closing the Gap on Indigenous disadvantage, extending the 2008 promise to a new 2031 goal. This includes reducing imprisonment rates by a mere 15%. While First Nations people make up just 3.3% of Australians, almost a third of all inmates in NSW are Indigenous - a figure that has... nationally doubled in size since the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. In the Northern Territory, 84% of inmates are Indigenous. In the time of COVID-19, risks to Indigenous peoples are incredibly high due to over-representation in prisons, chronic health conditions associated with higher infection rates, and a health care system that is entrenched with racism. Our response to this these issues is urgent, and a 2031 target just doesn’t fit the bill. See more

02.01.2022 The power of lived experience is exactly why peer work is so special and important. Here's an article by Alcohol and Drug Foundation about the benefits of having staff with lived experience of drug use in alcohol and other drug services. Check it out!
