NUsport recognises the spiritual and cultural significance of NAIDOC Week and we join our community in embracing the history and cul...ture of our First Nations people. Indigenous culture and sport hold a special significance for our University. In 1996, the National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games (NITESG) began as a joint class project between 13 students enrolled in a Diploma of Aboriginal Studies (Community Recreation) at the then Wollotuka School for Aboriginal Studies at The University of Newcastle. Now known as Indigenous Nationals, the event is a week-long multisport competition for indigenous student-athletes. The annual event brings together student-athletes from universities across Australia, celebrating the rich sporting culture of indigenous Australia while acknowledging the heritage and history of the participating student-athletes. The 25th Indigenous Nationals will be held in 2021 in Newcastle. The organising committee respectfully acknowledges the Pambalong clan of the Awabakal People, the traditional owners of the land on which the event will take place.
