19.01.2022 A little bit of history The day our lives were shattered. On the 16th May 1988 Nu Fruit was in its 16th year of operation with the Company founders Ernie and Art Campagna working around the clock on their ever growing business.... It was the early hours of the Monday morning John (Fred) Senkic arrived to start his night shift. Fred was the first team member to start work that night with the other 12 team members starting a few hours later. Little did Fred know there had been a fuel leak on site due to a faulty petrol pump. Fred clocked on as he had done hundreds of times before and hopped on a forklift. When the forklift motor fired it ignited the fumes that caused an explosion that was felt up to 10km away. The warehouse and office building were destroyed due to the size of the explosion. Fred suffered severe burns to his face, hands, upper body and spent months in hospital recovering. Fred still works for Nu Fruit and still works the night shift. He has been with the company for 35+ years and is part of the family. The Campagna brothers dreams had been shattered in an instant and the life of a team member hung in the balance. But with determination not to be beaten Ernie and Art with the help of their amazing staff ensured their customers did not miss a delivery. A make shift office was set up across the road, thanks to the generosity of the late Brian Judd. Warehouse staff members went to Melbourne to pack orders from the Footscray fruit and vegetable market. Nu Fruit was able to use a wareehouse previously used by Braemar industries in Sandford Road in Wangaratta and continued to operate from there whilst the damaged warehouse was being re-built. Since then the business has continued to grow and is now operated out of state of the art refrigerated warehouse facilities in Wangaratta (original site) and Epping Melbourne. Employing 100+ staff and supporting 100’s of local families. As founder and Director Ernie Campagna says Our staff are the backbone of our business and if it wasn’t for all of them then we may not have got though this disaster These words still ring true today.
