24.01.2022 At 12:01am tonight, travellers to Western Australia from interstate will no longer need to meet an exemption category, however they will be required to meet a n...umber of conditions to enter our State. Failure to adhere to those conditions or providing false information upon entry to Western Australia will result in fines of up to $50,000 or even jail time. Tonight, the G2G Pass system will change over to the new declaration system. Travellers to Western Australia will need to complete a declaration stipulating they do not have any COVID-19 symptoms. They will also need to declare they haven’t travelled to New South Wales or Victoria OR they haven’t knowingly come into contact with someone from those jurisdictions in the past 14 days. Once interstate travellers arrive at the airport, they will be processed, undergoing a health screening and temperature test. All travellers should be prepared to take a COVID-19 test at our newly established Perth Airport COVID Clinics, if deemed necessary by a health clinician. Travellers coming from New South Wales or Victoria, or who have been in close contact with someone from those States, will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days in a suitable premise. In addition, they will also need to take a COVID-19 test on Day 11, before they can come out of quarantine. We know these ongoing controls won't be convenient. There will be delays at the airport. The process may be frustrating for many people. But if you are coming to WA, we ask for your patience and understanding. These controls are in place to protect everyone, including your friends and family here in WA - and they are all in place based on our expert health advice.

19.01.2022 Ceduna lies at the edge of the Great Australian Bight and is a unique part of the country. It is a real frontier town and marks the boundary between the comfort... zone we have come to expect and the great unknown. It is the last major post before you hit some pretty remote parts of the country. As you head out the west you begin to realise that this is the last significant community for 1200 kms with the Nullarbor lying ahead. No hospitals, no supermarkets and not a lot of the support facilities we expect in our daily travels. Just long, straight roads, strong winds and usually lots and lots of flies. The number of road trains that rumble through the town every day is quite remarkable as they shuffle goods of all descriptions between the east and west coasts of the country. The guys (and girls) who drive these rigs are the true warriors of the Outback and wear their gear with a well-deserved sense of pride. Ceduna, a corruption of the Aboriginal Wirangu word Chedoona and is said to mean a place to sit down and rest) is also one of the friendliest towns I have ever visited. Not only do the local motorists wave at you (OK I have NT plates so they know I am from the out of town), but locals who I’ve never met before and am unlikely to ever meet again say G’day and hello when I pass them in the streets (and I don’t have a tattoo on my forehead saying I’m from Darwin). I don’t know why it is, but the people of the community actually seem to care about you. Maybe it’s because it is a frontier town that makes taking care of visitors important. Or maybe because they have come to understand in this time of COVID just how important tourism is to their community. Either way you do feel very welcome there and along the rest of the Eyre Peninsula too. The city truly is a transport hub, not only are there road trains, but freight trains and cargo ships servicing the regional production of grain, gypsum, salt and mineral salts through the maritime facilities at the Thevenard wharf. It is also the home of a significant fishing fleet and judging by the number of boats around town the locals love to fish too. History teaches us that Matthew Flinders was the first explorer of the area as he circumnavigated Australia in 1802, but there is clear evidence that in 1627 a Dutchman, Francois Thijssen landed in the area and mapped the coast naming the area and some of the islands. There is a plaque near the grain wharf that celebrates this visit. Flinders, on his visit nearly 200 years later also met the French explorer Nicolas Baudin in the area who named both Murat Bay and Point Thevenard after his French benefactors. Historically the region was also home to a number of whaling stations, particularly at Fowler’s Bay in the 1840’s and St Peter’s Island in the 1850s. Today Fowler’s Bay is one of the homes of whale watching along the coast. Ceduna itself has a public display of the number of whales in the harbour in the whale season which generally runs from around May until October. The best viewing and information facility to watch the whales is to the west of Ceduna at the Far West Coast Marine Park at the Head of the Bight, about 4 hours west of the town. Other things to do close to Ceduna include exploring a number of conservation parks such as Laura Bay and Decres Bay, both in close proximity with wonderful vistas and rugged countryside. Heading west out of the town lies Penong, a sleepy little town which would be indistinguishable from thousands of others around the land if it was not for its passion for windmills, with the country’s largest collection and biggest windmills are found here. Turn left at Penong’s school on the highway and you are on the road to one of the best surf beaches in the country, Cactus beach, which not only boasts amazing surf but also some pretty spectacular scenery too. Ceduna itself is the unofficial capital of the western Eyre Peninsula region which plays host to some of South Australia’s best coastline attractions. Streaky Bay, about 140 kms to the east boasts over 360 kms of some of Australia’s most ruggedly beautiful coastline with beauty that is often breathtaking. Streaky Bay itself, is picturesque village of about 1600 people with a chic air that sets it apart from others in the region, it has a full range of facilities and some great eateries too. Fish and oysters are some of the local delicacies that tempt visitors to stay longer. And while the bay itself is well protected it is the Southern Ocean (home to the White Pointer Sharks) with its relentless pounding of the cliffs and surf beaches that is the main attraction for many. The nutrient rich ocean attracts an enormous volume of fish and this in turn attracts those who enjoy fishing and it is not uncommon to see marina carparks full to capacity, even on a work day. There are lots of attractions and activities, among the best are three loop tours, each worth at least a day to explore, the Cape Bauer Loop, the Point La Batt sea lion drive and the Westall Way Loop. Take your time and explore the area and you will see stunning white dune beachs; rugged cliffs and headlands; azure seas, both raging and at peace; Murphy’s Haystacks, a unique rock formation; the only colony of Australian sea lions on the mainland and much, much more. And when you have had enough of the Great Southern Ocean you can also head inland to the Gawler Ranges. Explore the Gawler Ranges National Park where history, conservation and indigenous culture come together in a breathtaking experience. Ceduna is a good starting point to begin your exploration. And there is another dimension that this region brings to visitor experience and it lies above us. I had forgotten just how beautiful the night skies can be on a clear evening with no ambient light until one evening when staying at the Island Caravan Park in Streaky Bay. The site is around 6 kms out of the town and they reduce their lighting during the evening so eventually there is little ambient light to impact on the magnificent sky that the location, far from polluting big cities and with an abundance of fresh clear air can give the viewer. Lie on your back and drink in the spectacular display above. Different to Central Australia but no less magnificent. Sums up the western end of the Eyre Peninsula really a very memorable experience, even with a few days of lockdown thrown in. If you have to be locked down anywhere in Australia I can think of few better places to do it.

07.01.2022 The Nullarbor Plain attracts people from all over Australia for its incredibly unique landscape and remote location. Crossing the Nullarbor on the Eyre Highway from South Australia to Western Australia is considered one of Australia’s top bucket list experiences. The isolated road crosses the semi-arid plain, beginning in Port Augusta and ending nearly 1700km later in Norseman. One of the main things that people do on their Nullarbor Plain road trip is free camping off the highway and along the rugged coastline of the Great Australian Bight. For many people, camping out in this incredibly unique and remote landscape is one of the best ways to appreciate the expansiveness of the Nullarbor. #nullarbor
