25.01.2022 Wow - what a Sports Carnival! The NSS P&C are pleased and proud to present a record number of Good Sports Awards this year - proof that Nundah kids are great people AND great athletes! Our lucky random-draw winners were Roman T (Junior) and Archie D (Senior) - thanks to the Nundah Sharks for sponsoring our random draw prize, and to all our athletes and award winners. Certificates will be presented next term.
25.01.2022 The gift of the week is.... Inquiring. One of the great secrets of fostering deep learning is the ability to help students raise new kinds of questions (Bain 2012) Some Example of inquiry questions in Maths might be: ... How do we measure time? What is long? What makes a pattern? What is the value in number? Why do I need mathematical operations? What is equal? How are the four operations connected?
24.01.2022 Time to start practising those smiles...school photos are just 3 weeks away. A reminder that orders can be placed by visiting www.advancedlife.com.au or returning the order envelope that was sent home with students.
23.01.2022 A reminder that tomorrow is the NSS Cupcake Competition. All cupcakes are to be dropped off before 9am to the Wonderlab for judging. Winners will be announced at our final assembly on Friday. Good luck!
22.01.2022 Joyous and yet sad news Our dear Deputy Principal, Jane Newman, has accepted a request from our Assistant Regional Director to go to Eight Mile Plains SS as the Acting Principal for the remainder of the year (at this stage) behind a great colleague of ours Emma Kennedy who is heading off on maternity leave. Jane came to us from Roma Junior School and DDSW Regional Office 4 years ago and it has been so pleasurable to work with her, and watch her blossom in her leadership, ...and grow into our hearts. She has contributed so much to deepening our school culture with Choice Theory, and transforming our transition processes, enabling improved literacy practices, and embracing age appropriate pedagogies. She leaves us with many legacies at Nundah including Reading on the Green and resurrecting Under 8’s day. Her door as always literally been as open as her heart has to students, families and staff - whether they needed a chat, some help of any kind, a read, hug, a homemade biscuit, some quiet time or an apple. Jane has been working with staff from Eight Mile Plains, training them in Choice Theory as she has achieved her accreditation. She knows many of the staff and they already respect her. Emma is pleased that Jane will be able to keep the particular philosophy that we share with Eight Mile Plains, and enable it to deepen during her time as Acting Principal. She has very mixed emotions about this opportunity, but has never been one to shy away from a challenge. What I know is that she will stay strongly connected with us and come back to work with us learning Choice Theory, and maybe even return to us one day (unless regional office have other hopes and plans for her). For now, we will miss her energy, her smile, and her apples. We wish her all the very best and have full faith in her success in this role. We are working on finding a new Deputy Principal and will introduce them to you once we do. Jane’s last day is Friday 11th June, and we will have a ‘farewell for now’ for her on assembly. 20.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS to our winners of our Athletics Carnival..... NEWMAN!!! A big congratulations also to Blair coming in second and Anderson coming in third.... Be sure to keep an eye out for the first Newsletter for Term 4 for photos from the days.
19.01.2022 The gift of the week is.... Optimistic. Each week a student in each class will receive a gift badge. This morning on parade we practised 'doing optimistic' by smiling for 10 seconds to see how this impacted our body chemistry. Some days are easier than others and so we practise strategies that we can use on 'wobbly' days when being optimistic might feel hard.
19.01.2022 The Queensland Government has declared the last two days of Term 4, 2020, Thursday 10 December and Friday 11 December, 2020, be allocated as student free days. 18.01.2022 The Gift of the Week this week is inclusive....Each week a student in each class receives a Gift badge. Being inclusive is about how you see others. If you see difference that is ok, but it is how you see or think about difference that is important. At Nundah we see difference as what makes us great. Accepting difference is what makes the world a stronger, more interesting, and peaceful place.
17.01.2022 Our Thinking Hand This week as I have started virtual visits with classes to discuss and model how to use Our Thinking Hand. The range of ways in which they are using the hand is impressive, from setting personal goals, to planning how to play at lunchtime, to debriefing after lunch, to thinking through an excursion-incursion, to planning a project and student-led conferencing. I can’t wait to hear more examples as I continue our virtual visits next week and into term 4. RU...OK Using our Thinking Hand Last Thursday was RUOK day in Australia ... but what do we say when someone answers "No I'm actually not OK"? or I’m fine. We generally ask them ... > What's the matter? > Validate their feelings and empathise > Listen to their story > Offer advice > Maybe direct them to get help But can we do better? A Choice Theory approach in which we are training the students with Our Thinking Hand is somewhat different and follows the WDEOP route. > How are you feeling ? What is your physiology-body talk? (Name it to Tame it!) > What do you want? Or in this case maybe "how do you want to be?" > What are you doing to make that happen? > How's that working for you? (evaluation) > What else could you try? (options-choices) > Then you could help them make a plan to be OK. (Ask permission to offer advice if they want it but it's better to let them come up with ideas if they can. No one knows their situation better than they do) The Choice Theory approach may feel strange because it seems to lack the touchy/feeliness that we associate with helping people. But is the idea of RUOK about making us feel good, about supporting someone to stay in their feeling of not-OKness; or is it actually about being as useful as possible? Our Thinking Hand is an effective tool that we can use to help people to think things through, whatever it is on their mind. (adapted from CT online) Deb Cox

14.01.2022 Our gift of the week this week has been Inclusive. Each week, a student in each class receives a Gift badge. 2 years ago we only had Nine Nundah Gifts. Our then new school captain, Nic, proposed a tenth Gift - Inclusive. This was overwhelming supported by staff and students who are now reminded daily that difference is positive. Being inclusive of others' ideas and differences leads to more innovative outcomes and a more positive learning environment.
13.01.2022 This week our greeting is Sawasdee Krab/Ka , which is a Thai greeting for Hello. The written phrase to say hello in Thai is Sawasdee Krab/Ka. The ending Krab/Ka depends on your own gender, not the gender of the person you're speaking to. Krab is for men and ka is for women.
13.01.2022 Tonight we celebrate our graduating class of 2020. We are so proud of the great resilience and optimism you have shown during this Covid year. 09.01.2022 The Gift of the Week this week is reflective....Each week a student in each class receives a Gift badge. When we reflect, we look back at what has been. Looking back at 2020 causes us all to pause and breath. What students, teachers and parents have learnt this year has been immense. We have learnt about ourselves and the benefits of optimism; we have learnt about community and how important it is to a school; and we have learnt that there is always a way forward even if it sometimes feels hard or different.

08.01.2022 The Ready Reading Program Would you have an hour a week to spend sharing your love of reading with young children? Then perhaps The Ready Reading program is for you!... Working in partnership with the Queensland Government Department of Education, the Ready Reading program provides training for parents, grandparents and community members to ensure volunteers are supported to help our students to grow and develop through reading. Reading is a powerful tool to help children grow their vocabulary, language skills and imagination. It helps children to develop life-long skills that will support their future growth and learning. Ready Reading volunteers visit our school and read with one student at a time for 15 minutes. Most Ready Readers offer an hour a week, reading with the same four students. Nundah currently has several Ready Reader Volunteers working with our students. Our next Training Session will be offered on Thursday 8 October from 9am 12pm in The Treehouse at Nundah State School. If you would like to join the Ready Reader program or find out more, please contact Kerryn Grice on 3635 5888 or email [email protected]
