22.01.2022 We are in week 7 of our Mill working machinery tour..... stay tuned as we are almost at the finish line! PHASE 7 - THE CONE WINDER Built by Thomas Holt Ltd, in Rochdale England in about 1940, our machine spent most of it’s previous life in Geelong VIC @ The McGregor’s Mill, before coming to Nundle Woollen Mill in the late 1990’s. The Cone Winding machine is used to wind the dyed and dried yarn hanks onto cones ready for balling. Machine knitters love this coned yarn as... it will fit directly onto their machines, or if you love a long continuous length for a larger project, the coned yarn also very handy indeed! #NundleNSW #buyfromthebush #historicmachinery #textilemachinery #tours #LoveNSW #roadtrip #merinowoold #knitters #australianmade

20.01.2022 Today we are lighting up the Dye House with PINK!! Welcome back to Week 6 of our Working Mill Tour. PHASE 6 THE DYE HOUSE... Today our colleague Sandra is putting through a batch of Hot Pink 4 ply Sock Yarn. We dye in hank form on rotating rollers in our dye bath using fibre reactive wool dyes. We see Sandra carefully mixing the exact amount of dye and transforming the natural yarn into a colour burst. It takes about one hour for the dye water to reach its optimum dyeing temperature of about 90 degrees. This is the temperature that the wool absorbs most of the dye. Depending on the colour we are dying, this process can take between 30 min 1 hour. Eventually our goal is clear water. This means the wool has taken up all of the dye. Job almost done! At this point, we turn off the heating (steam) and allow the dye water to naturally cool whilst still rotating the coloured hanks through the bath. Once the water temperature reaches 60 degrees, the hanks are removed and hung for drying naturally, approx 2-3 days in summer and 5-7 days in winter. We would love to see you in Nundle, NSW on your next road trip. #NundleNSW #historicmachinery #textilemachinery #merinowool #tours #history #buyfromthebush #roadtrip #LoveNSW #australianmade #buylocal #knitters #dyehouse

16.01.2022 It’s GRAND FINALE FRIDAY and we are in week 8 and the final process of our Mill working machinery tour.. PHASE 8 THE BALL WINDING MACHINE Today, we feature Sandra working on balling up some 4 ply SOCK yarn in Sunshine, Cerise and Olive. This machine winds balls to a predetermined shape and size. The machine was made by WM Ayrton & Co, Manchester England, we believe around the 1930’s. It somehow made it’s way to Melbourne, and we purchased it from a small Yarn com...pany and moved it to Nundle in 2015. The main use for this machine is for winding yarns from cone to 50gm balls ready for sale. The finished balls are then individually weighed and labelled by hand by our wonderful team. We hope you have enjoyed this series and our "watch from home" tour for you. Thank you for following and we will surely be featuring more video posts of our small bush business again soon. If there is something you want to see, let us know! #nundlensw #yarn #buyromthebush #buylocal #LoveNSW #destinationTamworth #knitters #merinowool #australianmade #historicmachinery #tours #roadtrip

13.01.2022 Welcome back to Week 4 of our Woollen Mill Working Tour, we are half way through our Historic Machinery Showcase for your home viewing pleasure. PHASE 4: The Dandy Rover was built in 1938 by Prince, Smith & Stells in England, this machine has been converted to a Twister to suit our mill’s woollen spinning system. The Dandy is now used for twisting (or plying) 3 or more threads (or ends) together to make the 8 and12 ply knitting yarns for our Signature Wool Collections. T...raditionally, an 8 ply yarn for example had 8 strands, however more recently, the term 8 ply refers to the yarn thickness or unit of measure. Most 8 ply yarns these days have 3 or 5 strands and should be labelled ‘equivalent to 8 ply’. A special and unique feature of this machine is its ability to also produce our special bulky yarns of 20 ply and 72 ply. Izzy is carefully nurturing the "plying" process today for some of our 8 ply which will soon be ready for our Dye House. Our Retail Store and Mill is open 7 days. Tours operate Mon-Fri, please book in advance to secure your place as numbers are limited. $5pp cover charge and we give this back as a discount voucher to spend in store at the end of the Tour. #historicmachinery #textilemachinery #merinowool #NundleNSW #tours #history #buyfromthebush #roadtrip #schoolholidays #LoveNSW #australianmade #buylocal
