17.01.2022 On this day in 1992, the Torres Strait Islander flag was officially presented to the people of the Torres Strait at the sixth Torres Strait Cultural Festival. ...The flag was designed by the late Bernard Namok Snr from Thursday Island. His flag was the winning entry in a design competition run by the Island Coordinating Council (ICC), a Queensland statutory body representing the Community Councils in the Torres Strait. The flag was adopted at its Council meeting on 24 March 1992. The flag was created as a powerful symbol of unity and identity for Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, the Torres Strait flag officially appears of the NAIDOC Poster for the first time. (Thanks to the Namok family and the Torres Strait Island Regional Council) Rest in peace Bernard Namok Snr, your legacy lives on.

16.01.2022 CALL FOR DIVERSE WRITERS FOR YEAR-LONG DEVELOPMENT INTIATIVE WITH LEADING PRODUCTION COMPANY Media release: Monday 3 May, 2021 SAFC, SBS & SCREEN AUSTRALIA CA...LL FOR DIVERSE WRITERS FOR YEAR-LONG DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE WITH LEADING PRODUCTION COMPANY - APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN - FLYER SBS, Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) are giving South Australian diverse screenwriting talent a golden opportunity to gain hands-on experience with paid work in a leading Australian production company as part of the SBS Emerging Writers’ Incubator initiative. With round one applications opening today, the SBS Emerging Writers’ Incubator will place one South Australian writer in a leading Australian production company for a 12-month paid placement, where they will develop ideas into treatments, work across the company’s fiction slate of programming, participate in writers’ rooms, and work closely with development producers and others to increase their knowledge and further develop their skills. This innovative initiative supports the SAFC’s strategic aim to grow and diversify the pool of credited key creatives and will foster greater diversity in the South Australian screen sector by providing significant work experience in drama production for emerging writers from backgrounds and with lived experiences currently underrepresented in the sector. Applicants must be from underrepresented groups including First Nations practitioners, practitioners from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Deaf and disabled practitioners, women and female-identifying practitioners, those from the LGBTQIA+ community, and practitioners located in regional and remote areas. The national initiative has three rounds over three years, with one placement opportunity each year for a South Australian writer. SAFC CEO Kate Croser said: This is a golden opportunity for any writer, but particularly for someone looking to build their credits in television and form relationships with renowned producers. We are thrilled to be able to partner with SBS and Screen Australia on this exciting initiative which aligns with the SAFC’s strategic aim of increasing diversity in the South Australian screen sector, and growing and diversifying the state’s pool of credited key creatives. The SBS Emerging Writers’ Incubator is a national initiative co-funded by SBS, Screen Australia with participating state and territory agencies including the South Australian Film Corporation, and with the assistance of the Australian Writers’ Guild. 14.01.2022 COMMUNITY NOTICE The following events will not be taking place this year; NAIDOC SA March / NAIDOC SA Family Fun Day / NAIDOC SA Gala Dinner. In order to keep our community safe, we had no choice but to limit the events of NAIDOC Week in South Australia. Due to the impact of COVID-19 earlier in the year the NAIDOC South Australia Committee were unable to safely plan a number of events for NAIDOC Week 2020. The continuous change in restrictions and active COVID-19 cases meant ...that the Committee could not anticipate what NAIDOC Week would look like for the South Australian community. The Committee is hopeful that all traditional NAIDOC SA events will return in 2021.
